Write a press release proposal then :) I am not married to my proposal,
but I am not writing a new one based on others people's vague ideas :)

Yes, I like this angle better. It creates the same impression, Dave
mentioned. That way the focus is primarily on GNOME not on Nokia.

The other way around makes it news:

GNOME (?: enters) mobile devise market with Nokia -> additional
details -> Quotes of people involved -> XZY says: "This is an additonal
(?: prove) that GNOME's (?: strategy) of providing enables

Of course, this is just an example: I have no knowledge about mobile
devises, and haven't look into yesterday's footnotes annoucements
deeply.

And btw, if I wouldn't like GNOME, I'd certainly spend my time
elsewhere.

I wouldn't recommend it. Journalists get "Ain't we great?" stuff all the
time from bad PR consultants. If we don't play the game according to its
rules, we'll just get a bad reputation and less press coverage.

Think of a press release as a text that could be printed 1:1 in a
newspaper. I can't imaging the above text in my newspaper. Can you?

The impression "Ain't we great" is build by _regular_ press releases
about wins, successes, etc.

Ouch dude, "fell" swoop, please (cf. Macbeth). :-) Otherwise, yes, I fully
agree. Perhaps we should make sure there is an interesting angle beyond what
the press have already reported ("Nokia uses Open Source / GNOME technology,
news at 11.")

Re: Proposal for GNOME press release about Nokia device

2005-05-26 Thread Dave Neary

Hi,

The news is "Nokia shows how brilliant GNOME is" - in one foul swoop
this news pushes GNOME (like it or not) into the mobile device market.

It plays directly to one of the markets we talked about before, ISVs.
GNOME and GTK+ now appear to be in the process of becoming the de facto
choice for ISVs on Linux (Firefox, OOo, Eclipse, and now Nokia).

It is also a massive vote of confidence for the usability work which has
been done at the toolkit level in GNOME, making the writing of usable
applications easy.

This is a huge reinforcement of the direction which GNOME has taken
since before the 2.0 release, and we should release something saying
"Ain't we great".

Cheers,
Dave.

Hi,

certainly Nokia's use of GNOME tech is great but where's the news value
of the press release? Most journalists are not happy about getting press

Re: Proposal for GNOME press release about Nokia device

2005-05-26 Thread Murray Cumming
sucessful -> successful
like say thank Fluendo -> like to thank Fluendo
ranging from the use of -> from the use of

About "great", it probably is indeed too informal. So is "It's" at the
start of a sentence. "We are pleased to see industry leaders ..." would
be a possible replacement.

I'd say "industry leaders" instead of "an industry leader", because
Nokia are actually one of the last mobile companies to announce use of
Linux, though one of the first to announce use of GNOME.

Attached an updated version with most of Simos change suggestions, I
didn't change great to impressive as the economist style guidelines says
you should go with a short word instead of a long one when possible
