Marketing and 10x10

2005-06-06 Thread Karl Fischer
I love the concept of 10x10,
When I downloaded the Project Topaz (Guadec) stream.
I was so totally won over by the idea.

Should Gnome marketing plant the seed or what ?

"Spread the word about GNOME. Join the marketing team"
would be snappier than

My 2 cents:

- message ok

- illustration cool (maybe the shout is too loud what in this age of
self-contention shouting out loud may be even therapeutic)

- colors... to me GNOME is about living and natural colors. Actually the
GNOME 1.4 splash with that street and old houses was one of the reasons
that made feel quickly confident with GNOME. OK, beats and flies and
cows can be naturally grey and black but... What about trying some more
optimistic colors?

- Bitstream Vera Sans was actually another reason that made fall in fall
with GNOME, just in case you care. :) Serif fonts tend to seem too
serious and formal and the mixture of upper-lower case... still don't
whether I like it or no (maybe yes with a sans serif).

But anyway, the whole thing is attractive and, don't worry, even if it
lasts just some days in the gnome.org homepage it has a well deserved
heading position in the Marketing Team space!

The style does not really evoke GNOME, but we don't really have a standard
for that yet.

For a new and interesting look, I like it. It would probably not be our
front page splash for long, because it doesn't really follow our
traditional style.

Please always use the Bitstream Vera fonts in images such as
this, it is our standard font (despite using Trebuchet MS in the logo).

Echo.

By the way, what does the GNOME font look like with bold Trebuchet? And
can we easily change the trademark to use it, if it looks OK? Now
(before we start producing merchandise) would be a good time :)

How to bring new contributors to GNOME

The Marketing Team has started a new project to ease the arrival of new
contributors through the GNOME websites: Getting Involved. Some ideas:
improving the exposure of projects needing help in the gnome.org sites,
looking for contributors instead of developers, inviting Windows/Mac
users to get a first GNOME experience through GTK applications they can
install... The Marketing Team wiki space is the first Guinea pig: ideas
about how to make them appealing to contributors are welcome.
Interested? Get involved!

Hi Quim,

Quim Gil a écrit :

It's great that you're identifying these problems.

The sites (roughly speaking) are:

http://gnomejournal.org: quarterly magazine with 6 to 8 artciles written
by GNOME contributors. Claus is the current editor.

http://gnomedesktop.org: News site about GNOME - for both internal and
external usage.

http://planet.gnome.org: Blog aggregator for GNOME developers - pretty
exclusive right now.

http://gnomefiles.org: GNOME application repository.

http://gnomesupport.org: User forums, mailing lists and wiki entirely
user-run, with very little developer input right now.

http://www.gnome.org and http://foundation.gnome.org are currently aimed
towards users, and failing badly at it. They should be a mix of
gnomesupport and gnomedesktop.

http://developer.gnome.org and http://live.gnome.org are intended for
developer use.

http://art.gnome.org is intended to get all the artists in one place,
and aggregate their work.

As you point out, many of these sites are missing their goals, either
because they're not "official" sites, or because they're not analysed in
terms of what their target audience wants from the site.

Cheers,
Dave.

The GNOME Journal is not dead; we just found out during our current
issue that we need to reorganize a little bit. When these issues are
fixed, we will hopefully be able to publish every two months.

However, annoucements like the one you intent to do (or a call for help)
is best published by footnotes (gnomesupport.org), of course.

There is a mispelling. You mean "So if you and others...". :)

will: sounds very challeging.

time: very attached to will, as we know.

ability: apparently yes.

But let me doublecheck that my involvement in the MarketingTeam and the
GNOME community in general is not just a post-GUADEC effect but
something more permanent.

This makes sense.

The GettingInvolved project is a good test in this direction because it
already implies changes in the main gnome.org site and some
recommendations for parts of the whole *.gnome.org. This test will help
us as well to start exercising as the MarketingTeam this control (or
initiative at least) over structure, content and look&feel.

GettingInvolved should start solving this problem.

GettingInvolved IS NOT going to solve this key problem. :)

Re: Getting involved through the website

2005-06-06 Thread Dave Neary

Hi,

Quim Gil a écrit :

Since WebImprovements would be too broad and would clash with the work
of the GNOME Webhackers, I've gone for something more specific:

Please don't be too afraid of stepping on the toes of the GNOME web
hackers. Typically, websites like ours are maintained by people more
concerned with infrastructure (is the web server running OK? Do we need
to upgrade Apache module X?) rather than the look, feel and content of
the site. Often, changes are as small as "Add a link to new press release".

So if you (or others) have the will, the time and the ability to take a
big axe to the GNOME website, please feel free to do so. One of the
things which I would like to do (and which was discussed at the board
during GUADEC) is to transfer control of the content of the site to the
marketing team, and leave the infrastructure under the control of the
sysadmins & web team.

One thing the project is in need of is more artists.

(...)

For some reason few people seems interested in contributing directly

to that.

For some reason http://art.gnome.org/ is not asking for help, and nor
does http://gnome-look.org/ . You land on these sites and you see
hundreds of icons, screenshots, splash screens... You need to be a
medium or a woman to guess that the GNOME project needs designers. :)

You're absolutely right. There are artists around the GNOME and the
GIMP, but for the moment, they are not being organised and directed.

art.gnome.org could fulfill that function, but right now it's a contrib
site for desktop stuff, not a database of artists prepared to work on
GNOME's visual image. Plus, when you start talking about visual image,
it's very important to have a coherent vision, which isn't really
conducive to having dozens of artists... it's difficult to find a
balance between too many artists and too few working on the visual
identity of the project.

Right now we have too few :)

Cheers,
Dave.
