When I said commercial, I meant "using the GNOME brand to leverage a
commercial product" - that doesn't appear to be happening with Miro, so
it doesn't really come into play.

I was joking. Really. Should've smileyed, I guess.

But in general, trademark usage does need some kind of a quality guarantee.

Re: Communicating to users what GNOME 3.0 is

2010-01-20 Thread Stormy Peters
I think we need an official GNOME 3.0 web page.

It can then point to other blog posts and places for discussion.

I think we have a lot of excellent content from the blog posts, an interview
Vincent did a while back, etc. Is someone willing to pull that together and
edit it into a GNOME 3.0 page?

Absolutely not. Any commercial use of GNOME branding requires an
agreement. What Sven refers to as "fair use" is using GNOME brands to
refer to GNOME, or the GNOME community.

Just for clarification, I work for PCF and PCF maintains the system that
Gnome Miro Community is on, but the software is a Django app released
under the AGPL. I can get it moved to any system you want. I'm running
Gnome Miro Community in my free time because I thought it would help
Gnome--this is not a PCF endeavor.

I'm more than happy to share the responsibilities curating the site.
I'm happy to pass the torch if you folks think someone else is better
suited for the work.

In this case, I don't think there would be any problem - the only
potential issues for brand reuse I can see there are including videos
not related to GNOME, or inappropriate for the GNOME brand. But then
Miro is not (yet?) a porn distribution network.

This Miro Community is set up such that all submitted videos have to be
accepted by a curator (admin). I think that's true of user comments, too.

I hope Gnome Miro Community doesn't turn into a porn site.

I'm interested in attending, but what would the GNOME track be about? We
have found ourselves in competition in the agenda in previous years with
power management, desktop Linux, packaging, embedded linux and a number
of other sessions which attendees wanted to attend in addition to the
GNOME or GNOME Mobile track.

So what would be on the agenda? Do we open a call for contributions &
organise presentations & brainstorming sessions?

Awesome. We really need someone to coordinate the whole GNOME booth. :) So
arrange for the GNOME event box to be there, set up the booth, make sure
someone is manning it at all appropriate times and then tear it down and
send it back. The set up and tear down is very easy. The box itself is very
large and a bit awkward but I'm assuming you could have it sent directly to
the venue.

Zonker will also be there to help as he is giving a keynote. We might have
someone local to help as well.

You'll have to submit your talk proposals directly to the conference.

Yes, we have a budget for travel to represent GNOME at events. You'll have
to officially apply for it to the travel committee. [1] But I wouldn't think
it would be a problem if you are coordinating the booth. The only caveat is
that the preference is to have someone local (to save money and build
community) but so far we don't have any definites there. So apply soon!

Regarding the logo, this page has some guidelines:
http://live.gnome.org/BrandGuidelines.

I should have mentioned that I've seen that page. I don't think it
states the licensing of those logos and it doesn't talk about who can
use them and whether there are any restrictions for what they can be
used with. The thing that page does cover is what's allowed in terms of
derivatives of the foot logo and what transformations can be applied.

So unless I'm reading that page wrong or I'm missing something, it
doesn't answer my question.

Is it the case that anyone can use Gnome branding?

We have plans to use video as a marketing tool this year for the GNOME

plan in the next 30 days.

That's great! I'm not in any rush. I'll just keep on keeping on for

The only issue that exists right now is that short of a few dents and a
blog entry from John (J5), I don't think there's been much mention of
the Gnome Miro Community site. I don't think many people know about it.
If the plan involves using Gnome Miro Community, the plan also needs
to make the site more prominent.

Thanks for joining the list and sending an introduction! As far as your
