When it comes to swag, in some cases it is cheaper and easier if the
groups prepare a budget that the Foundation later finances. The
rationale: manufacturing t-shirts, bags, stickers, etc. is cheaper in
places like Latin America than the US or Europe, and sending money is
usually cheaper than sending a heavy box with stuff.

AFAIK, this is what has been done for GNOME Chile in the previous years,
I suspect that for other places it can work well too. Germán probably
knows more details.

Ask Jeff Waugh. If I remember correctly, it's his initiative.

Market share of epiphany seems to be really low [1], I don't think it
would be worth. If it was about a symbolic retribution, I would say that
Google already does a lot for GNOME.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but this is a really

That's too geek to be printed on a non-geek-oriented mug. :-)

Considering that Og sent an email recalling that he proposed something
similar, I wonder if he is interested on taking the wheels on this :-)

No, it doesn't. The good thing of distributing the duties to the local
groups, is that you can delegate that, too. User groups can take care of
asking for the physical addresses, making this process more efficient.

On a related note (probably only interesting for those who speak
Spanish), I prepared a talk with the same title that we presented at
many events in Chile. People say the talk is pretty funny.

The original version is here [1][2], I might be uploading an updated
version anytime (hint: if interested, ask for it, so that I actually do
it).

I like your idea. I think we need to sum up efforts and coordinate among
Latin American communities in order to achieve this and other goals.

I'd like to propose that we use a mailing list for this. We in Chile
have been using both gnome-cl-list and GNOME Hispano mailing lists for
coordination of things, but if this runs too far from what could be also
interesting for the spanish crew, maybe a gnome-la list wouldn't hurt.

As a coincidence, the guys from GNOME Chile are planning for that day
the "9a reunión de formación de desarrolladores para GNOME" (GNOME
developers training meeting) in a university in Santiago. More
information about the meeting can be found (in spanish) in:

http://wiki.gnome.cl/Novena_Reunion

These meetings usually have instructional purposes on what is GNOME, how
the project works, how to begin to contribute, and usually there is
space for users advocacy and practices on GTK+ and other GNOME related
technologies. The audience is usually around 30-50 people, and we've
gained a couple of guys helping to the spanish i18n team, a few
interested on hacking and learning how the development platform works,
and of course, more exposure of the desktop in the universities that
have holded the meetings.

I wonder, do you have any idea of how can this be improved, in
particular regarding the software freedom day?

For us in Chile is hard to get CDs shiped fastly (Ubuntu copies got to
my place in Chile after two months of wait). Probably GNOME Live cds can
be burned for that day, it will depend of the fundings or good will the
guys in Chile can get.

T-Shirts or other kind of GNOME merchandising, are availaible in some
form we can get it?
