[MARMAM] Marine mammal rehabilitation and outreach internship

SR3 (Sealife Response, Rehabilitation and Research), 
located just outside of Seattle, WA, is now accepting applications for our 2023 
marine mammal rehabilitation internships. We are seeking six interns for each 
of our two cohorts. The first cohort will be from June 12th- August 12th and 
the second from August 1st- November 1st. There maybe some flexibility with 
start and end dates to accommodate school schedules. Applications will remain 
open until February 28th with interviews to occur throughout March. There is 
limited financial support that students can apply for.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

SR³ is a 501c3 nonprofit based in Des Moines, Washington. Our mission is to 
promote the health and welfare of marine wildlife in the Pacific Northwest. 
Interns play a critical role in our mission by supporting our animal husbandry, 
field response, and public outreach programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Marine animal stranding response, rehabilitation and necropsy:

  *   Food preparation, animal feeding, providing animal enrichment

  *   General cleaning duties and animal enclosure maintenance

  *   Assist with intake exams, perform animal restraint, and administer 
medications and treatments

  *   Learn to make daily medical observations including wound monitoring, body 
condition, behavioral health, and recognizing common medical emergencies.

  *   Learn and adhere to standards of PPE, sanitation, and quarantine as it 
applies to transfer of disease and parasites

  *   Assist lead animal care specialist and veterinary staff in emergency 
situations as needed

  *   Assist with processing laboratory samples including packaging and shipping

  *   Assist with all aspects of marine animal stranding response, including: 
public interaction, animal transport, data collection, and post-mortem exam and 
sampling

  *   Participate in field rescues, releases, and other field responses as 
needed

  *   Routine upkeep of all resources needed for response and rehabilitation

  *   Perform data entry

  *   Other projects as assigned

Note: General husbandry and cleaning are a large portion of this internship

Outreach/Public Education:

  *   Engage with the public at community and outreach events, promoting and 
inspiring marine conservation

  *   Maintain and inventory educational materials

  *   Assist with fundraising events as needed

  *   Contribute to social media platforms and blogs

  *   Assist with administrative tasks as requested

 Leading Volunteers

  *   Assist Community Engagement Coordinator in coaching, supporting, and 
occasionally mentoring animal husbandry volunteers in the course of their duties

  *   Communicate regularly with Community Engagement Coordinator on volunteer 
successes and areas for improvement

  *   Direct animal husbandry volunteers in the completion of cleaning, 
feeding, and maintenance tasks

*PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:*

   - Play an active role in the medical and husbandry care of
   rehabilitating animals, including but not limited to medication
   dispensing/administration, sample collection and processing, reviewing and
   adjusting diets,and preparing for and assisting with diagnostic and medical
   procedures.
   - Participate in husbandry care, including but not limited to gavage
   feeding, enclosure cleaning and maintenance, water quality monitoring, and
   environmental enrichment.
   - Perform in-house laboratory procedures and prepare samples for
   shipment to outside labs.
   - Perform routine hospital maintenance that includes cleaning and
   maintaining hospital and laboratory equipment to ensure proper working
   condition; ability to maintain quality, safety and infection control
   standards, including demonstrated knowledge of sterile procedures and
   disposal of biohazardous waste.
   - Assist with all aspects of anesthesia, including intubation,
   anesthetic monitoring, and adjustment and use of ventilators.
   - Calculate dietary needs, update daily feed sheets, monitor intake, and
   consult with the veterinarian on diet revisions as necessary.
   - Inventory pharmaceuticals; stock and maintain hospital, laboratory and
   ambulance supplies.
   - Create and maintain accurate medical record documentation of clinical
   procedures, prescriptions, and diagnostic laboratory work.
   - Assist with euthanasia and post-mortem examinations.
   - Respond to emergency situations and stranded animal events including
   those that occur outside of scheduled work time and normal operating hours.
   - Assists veterinarians and biologists with necropsies, sample
   collection and field response as needed.
   - Communicate regularly with the Veterinarian and hospital staff
   regarding management of active medical cases including, but not limited to,
   medical procedures, treatments, husbandry/nutrition, and behavioral
   enrichment.
   - Participate in the education and training of staff, volunteers, and
   interns.
   - Perform other duties as assigned. Job duties may vary based on season.

*REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES*

   - Veterinary technician degree from an accredited organization with a
   minimum of 2 years in the veterinary field; or equivalent experience.
   - Veterinary Technician license in the state of Washington or ability to
   obtain one within 30 days of hire.
   - Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
   - Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and
   holidays as needed; must also be able to share a 24/7 on-call schedule in
   case of emergency situations.
   - Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Detailed
   oriented and able to follow specific instructions.
   - Excellent technical skills, including proficiency in restraint, sample
   collections techniques and patient monitoring.
   - Detailed and current knowledge of veterinary medical practices, animal
   anatomy and physiology, basic pharmacology and principles of anesthesia.
   - Knowledge of sterile techniques and surgical equipment cleaning and
   sterilization in addition to knowledge of infection control and quarantine
   practices.
   - Understanding of medical equipment, including but not limited to
   anesthetic machine, anesthesia monitoring, in-house lab equipment, Doppler,
   digital radiology, ultrasound, and autoclave.
   - Proficient in perceiving and acting upon relevant changes in animal
   behaviors and conditions.
   - Capable of dealing with emergencies calmly and efficiently.
   - Must be able to work independently and as a team with the willingness
   to learn.
   - In good physical condition with the ability to work outdoors under
   adverse conditions (rain, heat, cold, snow, wind and direct sunlight) and
   lift 50 pounds.
   - Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe.

*DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

   - Experience working with marine mammals in a wildlife, zoo or aquarium
   setting.
   - Awareness of safety procedures for handling wild animals and working
   in the field.
   - Experience managing hospital inventory and controlled drugs.

   - Public speaking experience.

You will be working outside in varying weather conditions, and you may be
exposed to extreme heat or cold and environmental allergens.

Must be at least 18 years of age
Able to lift/carry 40lbs
Proficiency in using Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Google docs
Have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record and your own reliable
transportation
Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
A flexible schedule

*Preferred qualifications:*
Junior or senior standing at a college or university or recent graduate
with a background in marine biology, conservation, education or related
field.
Knowledge of the local marine environment and marine wildlife. Strong
interest and enthusiasm for ocean conservation and sharing knowledge with
others.
Able to follow directions and protocols effectively. Willingness to learn
and participate in all aspects of work.
Work with a positive attitude and a high level of communication and
teamwork.
Previous experience in public speaking and interacting with diverse
audiences.
Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
Applicants should be self-starters with the ability to take responsibility
for completing projects.
Experience driving large trucks.
Individuals who are adaptable, responsible, hardworking, willing to learn,

Field response is unpredictable and changes seasonally. We cannot guarantee
