The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS), a nonprofit institution dedicated to
the understanding and protection of our coastal environment and marine
ecosystems, is seeking a seasonal intern in the Right Whale Ecology Program
from 04 January – 26 May 2022. This long-term project focuses on
documenting the abundance, distribution and behavior of North Atlantic
right whales and their food resource in Cape Cod Bay and adjacent
Massachusetts waters.The intern will be the primary vessel observer for the
project and will participate in research cruises up to four days a week.
Fieldwork responsibilities include photographing critically endangered
North Atlantic right whales, collecting behavioral and environmental data,
recording other sighting events (species, vessels, and fishing gear), and
working with a habitat research team both in the field and office. Office
responsibilities include photo-analysis (downloading images, inputting
sightings information, matching individuals to known animals using an
online and in-house catalog, cataloging), database entry and maintenance,
assisting the aerial team and maintaining vessel field equipment.

*Minimum Requirements:*

● Previous marine mammal survey experience, including background in species
identification and photo-identification of large cetaceans

● Experience with digital SLR cameras, lenses, and filters

● Basic computer literacy and working knowledge of Microsoft Office
programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

● Experience working on boats and ability to withstand harsh elements for
up to 10 hrs at a time

● Not prone to seasickness

● Must be able to live and work well in a team

● Enthusiasm and willingness to learn field and lab-based research methods
● Strong attention to detail and ability to work well under pressure

*Preferred Qualifications:*

● A college degree, preferably in biological/ environmental sciences

● Experience using iMatch image database software

● Experience with database entry and management

● Experience using GPS equipment

● Demonstrated ability to estimate object ranges from a vessel

● A valid US driver’s license

The successful applicant will be required to work a minimum of four full
days per week and will need to be flexible for research cruises due to
weather constrictions. The intern will often collect data independently in
the field, thus responsible, detail-oriented applicants are encouraged to

willing to work weekends, holidays and evenings as needed. Housing will be
provided, as well as a small stipend to cover general living expenses.

The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS), a nonprofit institution dedicated to

processing of zooplankton in the field and lab. Fieldwork responsibilities
include zooplankton collection through tow and pump techniques, marine
observer, and environmental data collector. Lab responsibilities include
zooplankton species identification and counts, plastics analysis, archiving
samples, data entry and maintenance, and maintaining field equipment.

Minimum Requirements

-A college degree, preferably in biological/ environmental sciences

-Good memorization skills and strong attention to details

-Basic computer literacy and experience using Microsoft Office
programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Experience with database entry and
management is preferred

-Experience working on boats, ability to withstand harsh elements,
and not be prone to serious seasickness

-Must be able to live and work well in a team

-Enthusiasm and willingness to learn field and lab-based research

The Center for Coastal Studies is seeking 1 - 2 aerial survey observers for
the upcoming 2022 right whale survey season. Positions may start as early
as Oct 15, 2021 and run through May 31, 2022. Observers will  be flying
surveys to assess the abundance, distribution, conservation status and
behavior of North Atlantic right whales in Cape Cod Bay and adjacent waters.

*Primary Responsibilities:*

●  Participate in right whale aerial surveys by rotating through the
three positions: observer/data recorder, observer/photographer, and ground
contact

●  Processing aerial survey data: entering and proofing data recorded
during surveys, completing effort and sightings data tables, photo-analysis
and photo-identification of individuals, updating in-house identification
catalog, and preparing data for submissions to the North Atlantic Right
Whale Consortium

●  Familiarizing oneself with current entanglement cases and protocols,
as well as individuals of interest


Other responsibilities may include:

●  Assisting program director, data manager, and/or flight coordinator
with relevant projects

The Center for Coastal Studies (Provincetown MA USA) is seeking a response
specialist for its Marine Animal Entanglement Response program.  CCS is a
private, non-profit institution with an emphasis on marine mammal research
and conservation.



Response specialists are on call to respond to entangled whales and sea
turtles following strict protocols that emphasize human safety and data
collection. Specialists participate in at-sea operations, data processing,
administrative tasks and supervision of trainees. They are expected to
interface with the public and professional mariners and to participate in
other CCS research programs as needed. CCS is searching for level-headed
candidates that can work calmly and problem solve under stressful
conditions.



Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree in a biological field;  at least one year
of at-sea working experience; small boat handling experience; excellent
computer and communication skills; strong focus and attention to detail;
the ability to work and communicate well at sea and in a wide range of
weather conditions. Prior experience working with large animals and
database management skills are desirable. Applicants must be physically
able to execute the work of the position. Capable of lifting 50 lbs. or
more, and working at sea for long periods of time. Weekends and scheduling
flexibility required.



This position is full-time, year-round, with the potential for annual

*Education Responsibilities*-Intern/s will assist with environmental
education programs, including on-site programs, off-site programs, and
festivals, including CCS’s signature summer week of events: Whale Week:  A
Celebration of the Sea, and Whale Camp.  Interns will assist in staffing
the Center’s SEASpace Marine Discovery Center, and beach pop-up tents;
designing and delivering presentations, answering questions about CCS,
marine animals (especially whales, seals and sharks) and ocean conservation
issues, and other general duties.

Interns must have their own transportation, and housing is not provided. A
small stipend is provided.

*Qualifications-*

   - The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled in, or
   recently graduated from an accredited college or university.
   - Preference will be given to students or recent graduates working
   towards environmental studies, education, marine science, biology or other
   related fields.
   - Intern should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication
   skills.
   - Intern should be a self-starter able to take responsibility for
   completing projects.
   - Students that are adaptable, responsible, hard working, willing to

Specialist for its Marine Animal Entanglement Response program.  CCS is a

Response specialists are on call to disentangle whales and sea turtles
following strict protocols that emphasize human safety and data collection.
Specialists participate in at-sea operations, data processing,
administrative tasks and supervision of trainees. They are expected to
interface with the public and professional mariners and to participate in
other CCS research programs as needed. CCS is searching for level-headed
candidates that can work calmly and problem solve under stressful
conditions.



Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree in a biological field;  at least one year
of at-sea working experience; small boat handling experience; excellent
computer and communication skills; strong focus and attention to detail;
the ability to work and communicate well at sea and in a wide range of
weather conditions. Prior experience working with large animals and
database management skills are desirable. Applicants must be physically
able to execute the work of the position, including long days at sea.
Weekends and scheduling flexibility required.



This position is full-time, year-round, with the potential for annual

The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS), a nonprofit institution dedicated to

abundance, distribution and behavior of North Atlantic right whales and
their food resource in Cape Cod Bay and adjacent Massachusetts waters. The
intern will assist the habitat research associate in the collection and
processing of zooplankton in the field and lab. Fieldwork responsibilities
include zooplankton collection through tow and pump techniques, marine
observer, and environmental data collector. Lab responsibilities include
zooplankton species identification and counts, plastics analysis, archiving
samples, data entry and maintenance, and maintaining field equipment.

Minimum Requirements

-   A college degree, preferably in biological/ environmental sciences

-   Good memorization skills and strong attention to details

-   Basic computer literacy and experience using Microsoft Office
programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Experience with database entry and
management is preferred

-   Experience working on boats, ability to withstand harsh elements,

The Center for Coastal Studies (Provincetown MA) is seeking a response
specialist for its Marine Animal Entanglement Response program.  CCS is a
private, non-profit institution with an emphasis on marine mammal research
and conservation.



Response specialists are on call to disentangle whales and sea turtles
following strict protocols that emphasize human safety and data collection.
Specialists participate in at-sea operations, data processing,
administrative tasks and supervision of trainees. They are expected to
interface with the public and professional mariners and to participate in
other CCS research programs as needed. CCS is searching for level-headed
candidates that can work calmly and problem solve under stressful
conditions.



Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree in a biological field;  at least one year
of at-sea working experience; small boat handling experience; excellent
computer and communication skills; strong focus and attention to detail;
the ability to work and communicate well at sea and in a wide range of
weather conditions. Prior experience working with large animals and
database management skills are desirable. Applicants must be physically
able to execute the work of the position. Weekends and scheduling
flexibility required.



This position is full-time, year-round, with the potential for annual

The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) is seeking an individual for the
upcoming 2017 right whale survey season to manage aerial survey observers,
flight scheduling and coverage, and in-laboratory studies including but not
limited to individual photo matching and data management. The successful
applicant will rotate in as an aerial observer in addition to management
responsibilities and will work with the aerial survey team and the director
of the Right Whale Ecology Program (RWEP) between December 15, 2016 and May
31, 2017.


Working with the RWEP director, the aerial survey manager will supervise
and direct aerial observers and part-time interns with primary
responsibilities to:



-  coordinate aerial surveys with the aircraft flight team and CCS
vessel surveys

-  designate air survey track coverage before flights

-  assign and task flight crews

-  manage information collected on each flight

-  coordinate photo identification efforts using established
matching methods

-  use existing catalogs from the North Atlantic Right Whale
Consortium photo catalog at the New England Aquarium,  as part of the photo
matching process

-  manage data using established databases and in-house photo
catalogues

-  participate in the observer rotation on aerial surveys as either
the data recorder or photographer.

-  direct the analysis and entry of aerial survey data including
the results of photo analysis and individual matching,

-  update the CCS in--house photo ID catalog website

-  prepare data for submissions to the North Atlantic Right Whale
Consortium

-  assist staff with the production of interim and final reports to
state and federal agencies

- assisting program director and flight coordinator with relevant

The Center for Coastal Studies (Provincetown MA) is seeking a response
specialist for its Marine Animal Entanglement Response program.  CCS is a
private, non-profit institution with an emphasis on marine mammal research
and conservation.



Response specialists are on call to disentangle whales and sea turtles
following strict protocols that emphasize human safety and data collection.
Specialists participate in at-sea operations, data processing,
administrative tasks and supervision of trainees. They are expected to
interface with the public and professional mariners and to participate in
other CCS research programs as needed. CCS is searching for level-headed
candidates who can work calmly and problem solve under stressful conditions.



Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree in a biological field;  at least one year
of at-sea working experience; small boat handling experience; excellent
computer and communication skills; strong focus and attention to detail;
the ability to work and communicate well at sea and in a wide range of
weather conditions. Prior experience working with large animals and
database management skills are desirable. Applicants must be physically
able to execute the work of the position. Weekends and scheduling
flexibility required.



This position is full-time, year-round, with the potential for annual
renewal. It is open to citizens of the United States of America and those
authorized to work in the US.

including database entry, downloading and cataloging images, and
photo-identification matching of images to known animals.  Interns are
required to work a minimum of four full days per week and must be available
for the full field season.

*Education Responsibilities*-Interns will assist with environmental
education programs, including on-site programs, off-site programs, and
festivals, including PCCS’s new signature summer week of events: Whale Week:
A Celebration of the Sea.  Interns will assist in the staffing of the
Center’s informational and sales kiosk on MacMillian Pier; designing and
delivering presentations, answering questions about PCCS, marine mammals
and ocean conservation issues, and other general duties.  Interns may
assist with a filming project, create displays for the PCCS’s laboratory,
and help create lesson plans and activities that are aligned with the
Massachusetts State Frameworks.



Other Responsibilities- Each intern will take on a project which they will
work on for the duration of their internship.  The project must be proposed
by the student and agreed upon with the PCCS staff.  At the end of the
internship the intern will present the project to the staff, volunteers,
and members of the public.



Interns must have their own transportation, and housing is not provided.



*Qualifications:*

   - The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled in, or
   recently graduated from an accredited college or university.  High
   school students may also be considered.
   - Preference will be given to students or recent graduates working
   towards environmental studies, education, marine science, biology or other
   related fields.
   - Interns should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication
   skills.
   - Filming and editing experience a plus, but not necessary.
   - Students that are adaptable, responsible, hard working, willing to
   learn, and have attention to detail are encouraged to apply.
   - Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
   - Must be comfortable working with all ages.
   - Must be comfortable working outside in all conditions.
   - Interns must be able to commit to at least two months; start and end
   dates are flexible due to school schedules.
   - Interns must work a minimum of 15-20 hours per week.



The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies is a non-profit organization
dedicated to conducting scientific research with emphasis on marine mammals
of the western North Atlantic and on the coastal and marine habitats and
resources of the Gulf of Maine. PCCS has been conducting research and

RIGHT WHALE AERIAL SURVEY OBSERVER

The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies (PCCS) is seeking a right whale
aerial survey observer for the 2012 winter/spring season (January
4ththrough May 15
th 2012).   The selected candidate will participate in an on-going long term
study of North Atlantic right whales in Cape Cod Bay and the adjacent
waters.  Responsibilities include taking part in marine mammal aerial
surveys, photo analysis, assisting with maintenance of the in-house catalog,
and data processing.

Previous experience as a marine mammal aerial survey observer and
photo-identification (right whales or other large cetaceans) is strongly
desired.  Applicants must have at least a B.S. with courses in biology and
the ability to live and work well in a team environment.  This is a
full-time seasonal position. Shared housing will be provided at no

Right whale Internship posting: Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies



The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies located in Provincetown, MA USA,
is seeking an intern for the upcoming 2011 right whale survey season. This
person will work with both the aerial survey and habitat survey teams, who
operate between January and May every year, documenting the abundance,
distribution and behavior of North Atlantic right whales in Cape Cod Bay.
The intern will primarily assist the habitat survey team, carrying out
boat-based photography of right whales and collecting behavioral and
environmental data at sites in Cape Cod Bay. The successful applicant will
also be responsible for a number of lab-based photo-identification tasks,
such as downloading images, database entry, and matching images to known
animals using an online catalog.  He/ she will be required to work a minimum
of four full days per week. The intern will often collect data independently
in the field, thus responsible, detail-oriented applicants are encouraged to
apply. Fieldwork will likely involve one to two surveys per week, between
February and May 15. Applicants must be available for the full field season.



*Requirements:*

   - A degree, preferably in biological/ environmental sciences.
   - Experience with digital SLR cameras.
   - Experience in photo-identification of marine mammals, and matching of
   photographs.
   - Data entry; basic computer skills in programs such as Excel and Word.
   - Experience of working on boats. Must not suffer from seasickness.
   - Must work well in a team. Field hours can be long and the winter
   fieldwork conditions are cold and often uncomfortable.
   - Enthusiasm and willingness to learn field and lab based research
   methods.
   - A valid US drivers license would be beneficial but is not essential.



Housing will be provided. There is a $1000 stipend for this position. This
is an excellent opportunity for anyone wishing to expand their skills in
marine mammal survey techniques, and will offer the successful applicant the
unique chance to work with one of the world’s most endangered cetacean
species, the North Atlantic right whale.



PCCS has a long history of conservation and research work with the North
Atlantic right whale. This internship will afford the successful applicant
an invaluable opportunity to work within a well-established institution,
with highly-qualified scientists, and to gain experience in
photo-identification, matching, data entry and analysis. Some experience in

The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies (Provincetown MA) is seeking a
research assistant for its Humpback Whale Research Program. PCCS is a
private, non-profit institution committed to research, conservation, and
education related to the marine environment (with an emphasis on marine
mammals).



Research assistant responsibilities include field data recording,
photo-identification, data processing, photographic matching, humpback whale
catalog maintenance, equipment maintenance and administrative tasks. This
individual is expected to participate in other PCCS programs, especially its
Marine Animal Entanglement Response program, as needed.


Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree in marine biology, zoology or another
biological field, excellent computer and communication skills, strong
attention to detail and the ability to work at sea over extended periods and
in a wide range of weather conditions. Previous humpback whale research
experience is desirable. US vehicle driver’s license is required.



This position is full-time, year-round, with the potential for annual
