CCS has been conducting research and marine and coastal educational programs on Cape Cod for 42 years. *Education Responsibilities*-Intern/s will assist with environmental education programs, including on-site programs, off-site programs, and festivals, including CCS’s signature summer week of events: Whale Week: A Celebration of the Sea, and Whale Camp. Right Whale Ecology Program - Observer Internship Center for Coastal Studies (CCS), Provincetown MA USA The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS), a nonprofit institution dedicated to the understanding and protection of our coastal environment and marine ecosystems, is seeking a seasonal Right Whale Ecology Program intern from 2 January – 31 May 2019. This long-term project focuses on documenting the abundance, distribution and behavior of North Atlantic right whales and their food resource in Cape Cod Bay and adjacent Massachusetts waters. The intern will be the primary vessel observer for the project and will participate in research cruises up to four days a week. Fieldwork responsibilities include photographing critically endangered North Atlantic right whales, collecting behavioral and environmental data, recording other sightings events (species, vessels and fishing gear), and working with a habitat research team both in the field and office. Office responsibilities include photo-analysis (downloading images, inputting sightings information, matching individuals to known animals using an online and in-house catalog, cataloging), database entry and maintenance, assisting the aerial team and maintaining vessel field equipment. Minimum Requirements: · A college degree, preferably in biological/ environmental sciences · Previous marine mammal survey experience, including experience in photo-identification of large cetaceans · Experience with digital SLR cameras, lenses, and filters · Basic computer literacy and experience using Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). *Summer 2018 Internship Opportunity* The Center for Coastal Studies is a non-profit organization dedicated to conducting scientific research with emphasis on marine mammals of the western North Atlantic and on the coastal and marine habitats and resources of the Gulf of Maine. CCS has been conducting research and marine and coastal educational programs on Cape Cod for 42 years. *Education Responsibilities*- Intern will assist with environmental education programs, including on-site programs, off-site programs, and festivals, including CCS’s signature summer week of events: Whale Week: A Celebration of the Sea, and Whale Camp. Interns will assist in staffing the Center’s Hiebert Marine Science Hall; designing and delivering presentations, answering questions about CCS, marine mammals and ocean conservation issues, and other general duties. Interns must have their own transportation, and housing is not provided. CENTER FOR COASTAL STUDIES INTERNSHIP RIGHT WHALE PROGRAM The Center for Coastal Studies is seeking an intern for the upcoming 2015 right whale survey season. This person will work with both the aerial survey and population survey teams, who operate between January and May every year. Documenting the abundance, distribution and behavior of North Atlantic right whales in Cape Cod Bay. The intern will primarily assist staff members with photographing right whales and collecting behavioral and environmental data at sites in Cape Cod Bay. The successful applicant will also be responsible for a number of lab-based photo-identification tasks, such as downloading images, database entry, and matching images to known animals using an online catalog. He/ she will be required to work a minimum of four full days per week. Right whale Internship posting: Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies located in Provincetown, MA USA, is seeking an intern for the upcoming 2011 right whale survey season. This person will work with both the aerial survey and habitat survey teams, who operate between January and May every year, documenting the abundance, distribution and behavior of North Atlantic right whales in Cape Cod Bay. The intern will primarily assist the habitat survey team, carrying out boat-based photography of right whales and collecting behavioral and environmental data at sites in Cape Cod Bay. The successful applicant will also be responsible for a number of lab-based photo-identification tasks, such as downloading images, database entry, and matching images to known animals using an online catalog. He/ she will be required to work a minimum of four full days per week. The intern will often collect data independently in the field, thus responsible, detail-oriented applicants are encouraged to apply. Fieldwork will likely involve one to two surveys per week, between February and May 15. Applicants must be available for the full field season. *Requirements:* - A degree, preferably in biological/ environmental sciences. - Experience with digital SLR cameras. - Experience in photo-identification of marine mammals, and matching of photographs. - Data entry; basic computer skills in programs such as Excel and Word. - Experience of working on boats. Must not suffer from seasickness. - Must work well in a team. Field hours can be long and the winter fieldwork conditions are cold and often uncomfortable. - Enthusiasm and willingness to learn field and lab based research methods. - A valid US drivers license would be beneficial but is not essential. Housing will be provided. There is a $1000 stipend for this position. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone wishing to expand their skills in marine mammal survey techniques, and will offer the successful applicant the unique chance to work with one of the world’s most endangered cetacean species, the North Atlantic right whale. PCCS has a long history of conservation and research work with the North Atlantic right whale. *RESEARCH ASSISTANT – HUMPBACK WHALE RESEARCH PROGRAM* * * The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies (Provincetown MA) is seeking a research assistant for its Humpback Whale Research Program. PCCS is a private, non-profit institution committed to research, conservation, and education related to the marine environment (with an emphasis on marine mammals). Research assistant responsibilities include field data recording, photo-identification, data processing, photographic matching, humpback whale catalog maintenance, equipment maintenance and administrative tasks. This individual is expected to participate in other PCCS programs, especially its Marine Animal Entanglement Response program, as needed. Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree in marine biology, zoology or another biological field, excellent computer and communication skills, strong attention to detail and the ability to work at sea over extended periods and in a wide range of weather conditions. Previous humpback whale research experience is desirable. US vehicle driver’s license is required. This position is full-time, year-round, with the potential for annual renewal.
