Yeah, ok, my wording was stupid. Instead of saying Marxists, I should have said, Marxists who actually write about music. My main point is that the grand tradition in Jazz doesn't end in the mid-60s. Even a lot of those veterans are still going strong. I saw Cecil Taylor in duo with Tony Oxley a couple of years ago, and I think the music he's making today is every bit as vital as those 60s Blue Note sides with Jimmy Lyons. BTW, that Vancouver llne-up looks nice. The line-up for the JazzFest in Berlin this year is the best in years: for one thing, Wayne Shorter is playing! Also looking forward to some of the free improv piano/drum duos, like Han Bennink with Aki Takase, Paul Lytton with Marilyn Crispell, and Pierre Favre with Irene Schweizer: http://www.berlinerfestspiele.de/en/aktuell/festivals/jazzfest/ueber_festival_jazz/aktuell_jazz/start.php Send list submissions to: Marxism@greenhouse.economics.utah.edu Set your options at: http://greenhouse.economics.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
[Marxism] Barbara and German DDR films
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Barbara (2012), written and directed by Christian Petzold, is a remarkable film. It may well be the best so far of all the German films made in recent years on the still very much contentious subject of the defunct German Democratic Republic (GDR). Generally speaking, such films, at least the ones that have reached an international audience, tend to fall into two categories: those tinted by nostalgia (in German the term Ostalgie – combining the words for ‘east’ and ‘nostalgia’ – is the label used for cultural expressions of nostalgia for the GDR) and those who, on the contrary, portray the GDR as a place of undiluted evil. Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) and The Lives of Others (2006) are probably the best-known examples of the respective category. Barbara treads a path beyond these ideological dead-end alleys. http://filmint.nu/?p=5881 Website: http://filmint.nu/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/FilmInt Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/FilmInt Send list submissions to: Marxism@greenhouse.economics.utah.edu Set your options at: http://greenhouse.economics.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Thanks for posting about Barbara, but there are earlier films about the DDR which are not formulaic, IMHO. Volker Schlöndorff's Die Stille nach dem Schuß (released in the US/UK as The Legend of Rita) and Ken Loach's Fatherland both deal with the DDR in nuanced ways. Loach's Fatherland is especially noteworthy as a form of comparison between actually (then!) existing socialism and actually existing capitalism. [Marxism] Video: Brian Senewiratne - Deterioration of human rights in Sri Lanka
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == http://www.greenleft.org.au/node/52164 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WL2nNjDuPnQ *Please circulate these links in Tamil communities and refugee rights activists in your area* On Saturday September 1, around 45 people attended a presentation in Fremantle on the human rights crisis in Sri Lanka presented by Dr Brian Senewiratne. Brian is a Socialist Alliance member in Queensland and veteran campaigner for the rights of the Ilankai (Sri Lankan) Tamils, and staunch advocate for the right of Tamil self-determination. While Brian comes from the majority Sinhalese community and has multiple family ties with the ruling elite (his cousin was a former president), he's famous for staring down the death threats and and insults thrown at him by government stooges. Australian society remains largely ignorant of the reality on the ground, and at best the Australian media offer the naive hope that with the so-called end of the war the situation might be improving. In fact the the reality is very grim in both the South, where an activist, journalist or government critic is disappeared at least every five days (23 journalists have been murdered in the last four years); and in the Tamil homelands of the North and East where violence and ethnic cleansing meet the legal definition of genocide. The meeting was called by the newly formed WA Network for Human Rights in Tamil Eelam and Sri Lanka. The network grew out of conversations between SA members Sam Wainwright and Ram Subramaniam. The military defeat of the Tamil Tigers in 2009 has provoked much discussion within the Tamil Diaspora about the way forward for their struggle. They recognised the desperate need for a campaigning initiative open to both Tamils and non-Tamils; and which would take up the cause of all exploited and oppressed people in Sri Lanka and Tamil Eelam regardless of their ethnicity; and without compromising on the right of Tamil self-determination. No surprise that there has been a surge of refugees fleeing violence from Sri Lanka, some even attempting to make the entire crossing of the Indian Ocean without stopping. The genocidal violence of the Government of Sri Lanka and the determination of the the Labor and Liberal parties to turn back the boats go hand in glove. But they also gives us the opportunity to truly expose the inhumanity of Australia's policy and the violent nature of the Rajapaksa regime. As if on cue, the next day Deputy Leader of the Opposition Julie Bishop declaredhttp://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-09-02/coalition-wants-sri-lankan-asylum-seekers-deported/4238758?WT.svl=news0 that Sri Lankan asylum seekers should be transferred back to the hands of the Government of Sri Lanka without even looking at their claims! The Sri Lankan Navy has even won thanks from the the Australian government for stopping the boats by firing on them. In fact leading figures in the Rajapaksa regime have been profiting from people smuggling at the same time. The new network has put out a draft Charter for Human Rights in Sri Lanka and Tamil Eelam for which it's gathering supporters. A certain campaign is the call to boycott the 2013 CHOGM to be held in Colombo. Under the pressure of its big and well organised Tamil Community Canada is threatening not to attend, something Julia Gillard has ruled out. -- *Alex Bainbridge* *0413 976 638 ** al...@greenleft.org.au* *Check out:* www.greenleft.org.au www.socialist-alliance.org www.links.org.au Send list submissions to: Marxism@greenhouse.economics.utah.edu Set your options at: http://greenhouse.economics.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

Re: [Marxism-Thaxis] I fucking love science
The nukes would have to be stored with US forces (I think the UK got out of being a tactical nuke pusher in 1992). The US has always tried to get Germany and Japan to pay for more of the US's military costs--to the point of placing bases and troops overseas in order to 'earn a profit' in countries with money (which had been Germany and Japan--and recently South Korea). It has 'nuclear sharing' agreements in NATO, none in Japan or S. Korea (that is, no plans to strap tactical nukes on Japanese airplanes or fire nuclear rounds out of S. Korea artillery pieces, etc.--unless such agreements haven't been disclosed). I would think the only thing of the nature of revelation in the story is that most people aren't aware of the thousands of 'tactical nukes' the US military has. For example, when nuclear weapons in Japan are discussed it's often about the ones the North Koreans are supposed to be developing, and never about the thousands the US military deployed and trans-shipped here in Japan.
