Dear Comrades,

what can you recommend about ther origints of the split?

One thing that got my attention it is that Deng Xiao Ping wanted to
modernize China with foreign technology. But not from the USSR, but rather
from capitalists. There are no ifs in History, but it seemms that seeking
this path, socialism in both countries, in whatever shape it existed, it
was finally doomed.

Well the news that the suspensions have been lifted is very welcome. Still
some on the CC obviously have a death wish. Kimber, Comrade Delta,
Callinicos et al have a lot to answer for. To win the faction struggle
they let loose the attack dogs on their own members and now the dirty work
is done, they have to hunt around for a lot of muzzles.

comradely

In the face of the attacks of the Muslim Brotherhood, we will not take refuge
in anything but our revolution, and we will protect it from any assault for the
millions who have taken to the streets since June 30 through today. The people
are capable of responding to any attack on their revolution. We shall continue
to mobilize millions into the streets and squares, to form our popular
committees to defend ourselves against the coercion of the Muslim Brotherhood.
We will protect our revolution against any assaults, in the face of any
attempts to circumvent it or to whitewash our demands for bread, freedom,
social justice and retribution for the martyrs against the killers.all the
killers.

We struggle with the masses of the revolution for its continuance and for the
implementation of its goals. For the revolution, there is a people to protect
it. All power and wealth to the people.

re Sean McMahon's new piece at Counterpunch:

Who IS this asshole?

The "counter-revolution of 25 January"? He says explicitly every turning
point of the revolution has been a step backward, including the very first
one!

And this:

"The *Ikhwan* is being marginalized because it was not reforming the state
along neoliberal lines fast enough. Because of the group’s material
interests in the Egyptian political economy it was slow to accept the
conditionalities of the long-negotiated International Monetary Fund loan.
Global capital wanted access to Egyptian labor and resources and when
financial coercion in the form of a capital strike proved unsuccessful,
military coercion was exerted by an American client mechanism in the
country. In a move that evidences that the global order wants a different
form of Egyptian state faster, Mohammed ElBaradei, a former functionary of
that very order, is now the anointed representative of acceptable change."

No no no!!! It wasn't the Ikhwan's material interests that stopped
imposition of IMF conditions. The MB WANTED to implement them, and was
repeatedly told NO by the Egyptian working class.
And this:

"At the moment the collusion between the different forms of property in
Egypt is ended and they come to blows, working people are too weak to
successfully contest it as a tripartite struggle. In state capital’s moment
of relative weakness, if only due to its battle with another capitalist
faction, labor is even weaker. The peace between the capitalist factions
was broken precisely because the dominant class did not have to worry about
another productive force successfully engaging it."

Again, no no no! The peace between SCAF and the MB came precisely because
labor was strong enough against Morsi that SCAF could see it had to be
replaced by liberal IMF supporters, like the one just nominated to be PM;
see http://english.al-akhbar.com/node/15082 for mention of him and of
workers' upsurge.

Nowhere in the article does he mention the 22 million who signed petitions,
or the 17 to 33 million who turned out June 30th. Nowhere does he mention
the workers cited in the above, or the many other examples of labor's
upsurge this year described here:

http://www.isj.org.uk/index.php4?id=904&issue=139

He's identified as a "visiting" professor at AUC. Let's hope his visit ends
soon and he gets his pseudomaterialist ass back here so he can stop
poisoning the minds of Egyptian youth. (I think we can all agree that the
12-year old in the viral video knows 20 times more about materialist
analysis than this fraud.)

[Marxism] ULU Students Union statement on SWP conference

2013-07-09 Thread Louis Proyect

==
Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message.
==

'Marxism’ is the annual summer school event of the Socialist Workers’
Party (SWP). This year, part of the event is scheduled to take place
inside the ULU building on Malet Street.

The SWP booked its rooms at full commercial rate (around £17,000)
through the ULU conferencing department, over which we have no direct
oversight. We are now putting in place measures to ensure that
democratically elected officers have powers over ULU conference bookings
in future.

Given the actions of the SWP in the past year, we feel that it is
necessary to make our position clear that as elected officers – like
many others in the student movement – see the SWP’s handling of recent
rape allegations against a senior member as a despicable act of denial,
nepotism and sexism.

The handling of the dispute around these allegations has exposed
something much deeper that needs to be challenged. During the recent
dispute, the SWP leadership has responded to criticism on an issue of
women's rights by calling its critics “feminists”, as if that was
something bad. Criticism of the SWP leadership has been silenced and
suppressed at every turn.

We recognise that not everyone in the SWP agrees with the behaviour of
its leadership. However, given that the SWP is an organisation in which
there is little scope for organised internal dissent, allowing the event
to continue with no public intervention would be tantamount to
complicity in the situation.

It would be wrong for the SWP to use its muscle to shut down debate and
escape accountability for its actions. We think that student activists
should actively confront the SWP over these issues at Marxism 2013.

Not having contact with his uncle and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd
isn't something Van Rudd, the activist artist, is too concerned about. The
corporate media, he reckons, place far too much emphasis on blood relations and
not enough on human relations - the way society is structured more generally.
His concern with the latter leaves him with little time for the ALP and the
people leading it.
