For me this sort of thing is what makes Marxmail
a great resource. Thanks to everyone who replied.

Summing up:

Lasalle in 1862 wrote:

"Alle große politische Aktion besteht im Aussprechen dessen,
was ist, und beginnt damit. Alle politische Kleingeisterei
besteht in dem Verschweigen und bemänteln dessen, was ist."

Which translates into English as:

“All great political action consists of and begins with,
speaking out about that which is. All political petty-mindedness
consists of being silent and covering up that which is.”

Luxemburg in 1906 paraphrased Lasalle. Possibly she didn't have
the original available and was quoting from memory? She wrote:

"Wie Lassalle sagte, ist und bleibt die revolutionärste Tat,
immer ›das laut zu sagen, was ist."

Which translates into English as

"As Lassalle said, it is and remains the most revolutionary
act to always 'say loudly what is'".

Part of that appears to have been translated in the Rosa Luxemburg
Reader as the sentence I originally asked for help identifying:
"The most revolutionary thing one can do is always to proclaim
loudly what is happening."

And just to complicate things, in 1933 Trotsky also paraphrased
Lasalle: "Ferdinand Lassalle, who was no stranger to opportunism
or adventurism, nevertheless expressed perfectly well the
fundamental requirement of revolutionary politics: 'Every great
action begins with the statement of what is.'"

Thanks again

Ian Angus

In his 1992 book "Power and Money," Ernest Mandel rejected the idea that
"abundance" in a post-capitalist society would mean "a boundless supply of

He said that he had "many times pointed out the absurdity of such a notion."

Dr. Barry Commoner was the best-known ecologist in the United States in the

1970, and his 1971 book, The Closing Circle, was a best-seller and remains a

As this talk shows, he was also an ecosocialist, before that word was created.

Commoner gave this talk at the Community Church of Boston on February 22,

I asked:
> The phrase "build a new world in the shell of the old"
> appears very frequently in anarchist writing.
> Can anyone tell me where it originated?

Some helpful Marxmail readers have pointed me to the
Preamble of the IWW Constitution, which said:

"The army of production must be organized, not only
for everyday struggle with capitalists, but also to
carry on production when capitalism shall have been
overthrown. By organizing industrially we are
forming the structure of the new society within the shell
of the old."

Unless someone has an earlier reference, that's almost
certainly the origin of the phrase.

I find it interesting that the wobblies used the phrase
differently than today's anarchists do. The IWW viewed
the structure of their organization as the structure of
the future workers' government -- based on industry and class,
organized through workplaces rather than on geography.

Modern anarchists change the words slightly -- "build a
new world in the shell of the old," rather than "forming the
structure ..."

And they generally interpret it to mean something like
"the means must be consistent with the ends" -- that people
in the movement today must behave as we expect everyone to
behave in a future society.

The same or similar words are sometimes used by Black Bloc types
to justify their tactics -- in a future anarchist society there
will be no restrictions on my behavior, so I'm acting today
as if there were no restrictions, and no one can tell me
not to.

>Experts Fear Collapse of Global Civilisation

The "experts" who wrote the article that the IPS article is based on
are Paul and Anne Ehrlich. They have been predicting imminent doom
at least since they wrote "The Population Bomb" in 1968 -- and they've
done the same in hundreds of similar articles and books since.

Their 2013 text is more carefully worded than their 45-year-old
bestseller, but it boils down to the same claim: that the primary cause
of all human problems is overpopulation. They now add references to
"overconsumption," but for them that only means bad behaviour by
individuals, not the waste and destruction that is inherent in
capitalism.

Marxists do need to analyse and understand the issues posed by capitalist
misuse and abuse of the earth, but the Ehrlichs and their ilk are not
a good guide to the problems or the solutions. A good place to start
would be Fred Magdoff's article in the current Monthly Review,
"Global Resource Depletion: Is Population the Problem?"

Vandana Shiva is not a Marxist, but she is an effective and often

http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/08/08/canadas-emissions-deception/
A new report from Ottawa claims Canada is reducing emissions, but
there is much less here than meets the eye. The feds have lowered

for changes that haven't been made.

http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/07/25/australias-national-food-plan-will-feed-corporate-hunger/
Contrary to Australian government claims, the proposed food plan is a
recipe for increasing vulnerability, lack of resilience and heightened
inequality in our food system.

broad. He ignores the role of the U.S. military, and fails to focus
his fire on the dirtiest fuels.

THE RETURN OF THE POPULATION BOMBERS
http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/07/20/the-return-of-the-population-bombers/
Ian Angus: Overpopulation ideology undermined the environmental
movement in the 1970s, diverting social protest into harmless
channels. To prevent a similar setback today, we must understand
populationism's conservative role, and why it is attractive to a
growing number of green activists.

BY LIGHT ALONE. WHAT IF CAPITALISM ELIMINATED HUNGER?

ISRAEL’S ENVIRONMENTAL COLONIALISM AND ECO-APARTHEID
http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/07/16/israels-environmental-colonialism-and-eco-apartheid/
Ben Lorber: By greenwashing the occupation, Israel hides its apartheid
behind an environmentalist mirage, and distracts public attention not
only from its brutal oppression of the Palestinian people, but from
its large-scale degradation of the earth upon which these tragedies
unfold.

RIO+20 PROVES CAPITALISM WON’T SAVE THE PLANET
http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/07/16/rio20-proves-capitalism-wontsave-planet/
Martin Empson: While the world's governments refused to act, 50,000
thousands trade unionists, rural workers, landless peasants and
indigenous peoples demonstrated outside. They are the real hope for a
mass anti-capitalist movement movement to stop environmental disaster.

FUKUSHIMA: A DISASTER MANUFACTURED IN THE IMPERIAL BOARDROOMS OF CAPITAL
http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/07/11/fukushima-a-disaster-manufactured-in-the-imperial-boardrooms-of-capital/
Chris Williams: Conscious actions by the ruling elite, not natural
causes, led directly to the triple nuclear meltdowns. The decisions
they made were dictated by the prime directive of capitalism: there
is no higher power than the God of Profit.

WPD: GATES TO COERCIVE CONTRACEPTION
http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/07/11/new-gates-to-coercive-contraception-and-population/
Betsy Hartmann: On World Population Day, the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation hosts an international meeting that blames poor women for
the social ills caused by the rich and powerful. Human rights
activists fear this heralds a serious backslide to the bad old days of
coercive contraception and population control.

AN ECOSOCIALIST PERSPECTIVE FOR UK GREENS
http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/07/03/an-ecosocialist-perspective-for-uk-greens/
Sean Thompson: The political strategy of the Green Party assumes that
politics just means fighting elections. This is a doomed approach. We
will only win elections by building a movement, and we will never
build much of a movement by simply fighting elections.

REVOLUTIONIZING PRODUCTION, FOR HUMANITY AND THE WORLD
http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/05/04/revolutionizing-production-for-humanity-and-for-the-world/
Socialism cannot just take over capitalist production and manage it
better. The production process itself needs to be radically critiqued,
reconceived, overthrown and transformed by the working people
themselves, while still maintaining and developing a working economy.

primitive fetishism. It leads to mounting repression, increased human
suffering, a collapse of infrastructure and, finally, collective
death.

CAN CAPITALISM COPE WITH THE END OF GROWTH?
http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/03/22/can-capitalism-cope-with-the-end-of-growth/
Book review. Richard Heinberg shows that if business as usual
continues, life in a degrowth economy will be painful for everyone but
the very rich, but he stops short of calling for radical system
change.

GREEN ENERGY WON’T SAVE THE EARTH
WITHOUT SOCIAL CHANGE
http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/03/21/green-energy-alone-wont-save-the-earth/
The most popular techno-fix for global warming is green energy. If
energy companies would only deploy wind, hydro, solar or nuclear, then
emission-intensive fossil fuels will eventually disappear. But will
that work?

OCEAN DAMAGE FROM CLIMATE CHANGE
WILL COST $2 TRILLION A YEAR
http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/03/21/ocean-damage-2-trillion/
Some things are too valuable to be assigned meaningful prices. Rather
than asking the impossible question of what the ocean itself is worth,
a new study asks what ocean-related costs could be avoided by rapidly
cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

ROBERT BIEL: IMPERIALISM AND ECOCIDE
http://climateandcapitalism.com/2012/03/20/robert-biel-imperialism-and-ecocide/
If capitalism had been established in one small society in a small
area it would consume itself in its unsustainability and cease to
exist. But it is inherently global, and this is the problem.

I'm pleased to report that "Too Many People? Population, Immigration,
and the Environmental Crisis" (Haymarket 2011) which I co-authored
with Simon Butler, is causing anti-immigrant groups some pain.

As I explain in this article, they seem to be coordinating their
attacks on it: <http://climateandcapitalism.com/?p=6495>

The president of one such group, Madeline Weld of the Population
Institute of Canada, has written an account of the "Too Many People?"
book launch meeting I spoke at in Montreal last week.

My favorite sentence: “It is probably symptomatic of the politicized
population-denial culture of our progressive universities that
sustainability advocates were involved in hosting the book launch of a
population-denying Bolshevik.”

The entire unintentionally hilarious and factually inaccurate article,
titled "The "Eco" Marxist Case For Population-Denial---Ian Angus' book
launch in Montreal" is here: <http://candobetter.net/node/2758>

[Marxism] Australian socialists debate ecosocialism

2011-12-14 Thread Ian Angus
==
Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message.

Is there a need for the word “ecosocialism”? Does it mean something
substantially different from socialism without the prefix? Will using
it help to build the left? Or is it an unnecessary and dangerous
concession to greens who lean to liberalism and anarchism?

Here at Climate and Capitalism, we gave our answers to those questions
long ago, by putting the words “Ecosocialism or barbarism: there is no
third way” at the top of every page. But on that question we are in a
minority. While the word “ecosocialism” is used by growing numbers of
green lefts and left greens, it is still very far from being
universally accepted.

Of course, it is just a word. What’s important is the idea that in the
21st century the fight against environmental destruction and the fight
against capitalism are inextricably linked – neither can succeed
without the other. The label anyone chooses to apply to that concept
is far less important.

Still, we think that “ecosocialism” expresses that concept better than
any other, so we have been pleased to see a discussion on this subject
develop in the Socialist Alliance, the largest socialist organization
in Australia.

Most left groups insist that members keep their internal disagreements
and debates behind closed doors and carry a common party line in
public. The Socialist Alliance has taken the unusual – and in my
opinion totally positive – step of carrying on political discussions
in public. Any member can write articles for its public online
discussion bulletin, Alliance Voices.

[Marxism] Early reviews of "Too Many People?"

Based on my previous experiences, I expected to wait months before
seeing any feedback, but four reviews of "Too Many people?" have
already been published in four countries -- just 6 weeks after the
official publication date. Two are in print publications, all are
available online.
SOCIALIST REVIEW (UK):
"Too Many People? is not disheartening or alarmist, as some books
about climate change can be. It is assertive, passionate and a key
reference for arming ourselves against those, on the right and the
left, who talk about population control."
http://www.socialistreview.org.uk/article.php?articlenumber=11851
ECOCLUB (GREECE)
"This timely work methodically reviews and demolishes the
pseudo-science of Populationism … reinforcing humanist and
internationalist arguments exposing the methods and politics and
pseudo-statistics of populationist organisations ... A must read which
will become a classic"
http://ecoclub.com/headlines/reviews/756-27-review
SOCIALIST WORKER (CANADA)
"Their central argument – that it is not simply our numbers, but how
our society is organized to benefit only few – is one that needs to be
heard in the environmental movement."
http://socialistworkercanada.wordpress.com/2011/11/21/book-review-are-too-many-p\
eople-the-problem/
HOT TOPIC (NEW ZEALAND)
"An ever-necessary reminder that the world's poor are the first
victims of ecological disaster, not the cause."

This coming Sunday, October 30, I will be interviewed on
Chris Moore's show, on KDKA 1020AM in Pittsburgh, PA.

That's a 50,000 Watt station that they say can be
heard over the air in 36 states, as well as on the Internet ...
so there is a very big potential audience for views that
don't often get heard on commercial radio.

The topic is the new book I wrote with Simon Butler,
"Too many People?" (Haymarket) and the article we wrote this
week for Grist on "Is the Environmental Crisis Caused by
the 7 Billion or the 1%?"

I'm scheduled to be on for an hour, starting after the
5pm (eastern time) news. It's supposed to be a 20 minute
interview, followed by a phone-in. I hope many Marxmail
readers will listen and participate.

The book: http://www.haymarketbooks.org/pb/Too-Many-People

The article: http://climateandcapitalism.com/?p=5626

Radicals don't often get a chance to speak on commercial radio
in North America, so I was pleased to be a guest this morning
on the Lanigan & Malone show on Magic 107.5 in Cleveland Ohio,
discussing our new book, "Too Many People?"

This was a pretty dramatic change from the interviews Simon and
I have had on public and community stations, where sympathetic
interviewers gave us time to answer and didn't interrupt or argue.
But as a result it may have been more interesting to listeners,
and I suspect it reached more people than all community
stations combined!

The show is online here -- my segment starts about 16:35

Early reviews

RAJ PATEL, AUTHOR OF STUFFED AND STARVED: “This excellent book is
steadfast in its refutations of the flabby, misogynist and sometimes
racist thinking that population growth catastrophists use to peddle
their claims. It’s just the thing to send populationists scurrying
back to their bunkers.”

FRED PEARCE, AUTHOR OF PEOPLEQUAKE: "How did apparently progressive
greens and defenders of the underprivileged turn into people-haters,
convinced of the evils of over-breeding among the world's poor? How
did they come to believe the 200-year-old myths of a right-wing
imperialist friend of Victorian mill-owners? It's a sorry story, told
here with verve and anger."

JOHN BELLAMY FOSTER, AUTHOR OF MARX’S ECOLOGY: “Ian Angus and Simon
Butler are not ordinary environmentalists and Too Many People? is not
an ordinary book on population and the environment. They demonstrate
that by demolishing the notion that too many people (and too many
consumers) are the source of our environmental ills we can get at the
real problem: the system of accumulation and waste commonly known as
capitalism.”

DEREK WALL, AUTHOR OF THE RISE OF THE GREEN LEFT: “Sadly the
population myth has been used to distract attention from the roots of
ecological crisis in a destructive economic system and to shift the
blame for problems such as climate change on to the poor. This
splendid book is an essential read for all those of us concerned with
creating an ecologically sustainable and just future. Buy it, read it
and spread the word!”

MARTIN EMPSON, AUTHOR OF MARXISM AND ECOLOGY: CAPITALISM, SOCIALISM
AND THE FUTURE OF THE PLANET: "Ian Angus and Simon Butler’s superb
book challenges the “common sense” idea that there are too many
people. Clearly and concisely they blame a system that puts profit
before people and planet, refuting the arguments of the later day
Malthusians. It is a book that should be read by every environmental
campaigner, trade unionist and political activist."

CHRIS WILLIAMS, AUTHOR OF ECOLOGY AND SOCIALISM: “Angus and Butler
have written a comprehensive dissection of the arguments surrounding
over-population, It’s a vital and insightful socialist response to the
debate and highly recommended to anyone interested in fighting for a
better world and avoiding the pitfalls of false solutions.”

BETSY HARTMANN, AUTHOR OF REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS AND WRONGS: THE GLOBAL
POLITICS OF POPULATION CONTROL: “With clear prose and careful, cogent
analysis, Angus and Butler provide the tools necessary to dismantle
the myth of overpopulation step by step … [and] show the way to a more
hopeful, justice-centered environmental and reproductive politics.”

JOEL KOVEL, AUTHOR OF THE ENEMY OF NATURE: “This is an essential
subject, and we are in Angus and Butler’s debt for treating it with
such clarity and rigor.”

>>or used in all countries (nation-states, including failed states),
>>>>especially as a form of parliamentary procedure. I have not a clue about
>>how to answer his question. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There are two dominant traditions in English speaking countries.

I believe that Robert's is based on the U.S. House of Representatives'
rules, but it is really designed to be used in non-governmental
organizations, and is so used in many countries. I've never heard of
Robert's as such being used in an actual legislature, but I suppose
it's possible.

The governments of most of the countries in the British commonwealth
follow procedures based on Erskine May’s "The Law, Privileges,
Proceedings and Usage of Parliament from Britain."

Canada uses its own unique variant, built largely around Arthur
Beauchesne’s "Parliamentary Rules and Forms of the House of Commons of
Canada," usually referred to just as Beauchesne's.

[Marxism] Should Socialists support nuclear power?

Climate and Capitalism has frequently published articles arguing that
nuclear power is innately dangerous and must be stopped.

To encourage discussion of this critical issue, we have now posted an
article by two veteran socialists who argue that the anti-nuke position is
based on “fear and fantasy,” and that only nuclear power can meet society’s
energy needs.

What do you think? Should socialists support the expansion of nuclear power?
If not, what’s the alternative?

I should have been clearer. I have the information from the translation
of the Anti-Critique posted on the invaluable MIA.

What I'm trying to find is the source of the translation I quoted,
which is not the translation that MIA has.

That is ...

"Marxism is a revolutionary worldview that must always struggle for
new revelations. Marxism must abhor nothing so much as the possibility
that it becomes congealed in its current form. It is at its best when
butting heads in self-criticism, and in historical thunder and
lightning, it retains its strength."

Many thanks to Lou for locating this in the last paragraph of Luxemburg's Anti-
Critique. Now ... can anyone help me identify the source of this particular
translation?

This quote appears in various places on the web, mostly
in collections of quotations, but none of them gives a
source. Can anyone tell me if Rosa Luxemburg
actually wrote this, and if so, where it appears in her works?

Both of these are excellent books, but probably not appropriate for the
beginners that David is working with.

I would suggest

"The tangled bank: an introduction to evolution" by Carl Zimmer
or
"Evolution: a very short introduction" by Brian Charlesworth and Deborah
Charlesworth

Neither is a Marxist text, of course, but both explain the basic concepts well.
