Laziness. I saw it happening and procrastinated until one of our long-time
subscribers brought it up first. Sometimes one just wants minor problems to
go away.

By the way, the reminder was not aimed at you, it was aimed at the list.
Neither Lou nor I remember subscribers who break these rules so long as
behavior changes when reminders are made.

in the subject line I was responding to, I would have known about the rule.

So why did you not remind us all of this rule when it was first violated
with regards to me?

Vijay probably wasn't aware of the rule either.

We have had less need to use impose it nowadays since the list has 
become a lot more civil in recent years. When the Marxism list was 
launched in 1998 it was bogged down with flame wars, often punctuated 
with subject headings like "Why Joe Blow is a defender of imperialism". 
The truth is that flame wars continued for another 10 years at least 
because many subscribers had an agenda, which was to establish their 
simon-pure Bolshevik credentials. One of the benefits of more recent 
investigations of Bolshevik (or more accurately, Russian social 
democratic history) is an understanding that you can have sharp debates 
without characterizing your ideological adversary as agents of 
capitalism, imperialism, etc.
