Lately I have been wondering if the business cycle model makes sense. Isn't it possible that American capitalism has entered a new phase of decline that bubbles preempted only up to a point? Could we be the next Japan? Furthermore, this boom-and-bust paradigm only seems to make sense when it is applied to a G8 type nation. When is the last time that Paraguay or Malawi went through a business cycle? == Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Hi Michael I have been thinking for some time about this word crisis especially in the context of Indigenous Education policy where I now work. Since the 70s here in Oz there have been a regular series of reports talking about the crisis in Indigenous education. But of course there was no crisis at all. Just underfunding, under resourcing and a culture of low expectations etc that formed a toxic equilibrium. I have also been re-reading Benjamin's theses on history. Number 8 strikes me as particularly relevant. It says The tradition of the oppressed teaches us that the state of emergency in which we live is not the exception but the rule. We must attain to a conception of history that is in keeping with this insight. Then we shall clearly realize that it is our task to bring about a real state of emergency. and this will improve our politics in the struggle against Fascism If you substitute crisis for state of emergency in Benjamin's thesis then I think we can begin to see a bridge between your thinking and Lou's. comradely Gary Send list submissions to: Marxism@greenhouse.economics.utah.edu Set your options at: http://greenhouse.economics.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
