I am anti-war myself and I believe in engaging with people. I wanted to speak to the conscience of the Stop the War members and try to convey the voices of victims of the war in Syria. I met many wonderful people, and I was touched by their compassion and eagerness to campaign against wars. I have so much respect for Stop the War’s protests against the Iraq invasion in 2003. I highly appreciate their recent campaign to welcome refugees. I also have so much disappointment and disagreement regarding Stop the War’s position on Syria. I am aware that many members of Stop the War are perceiving the Syria war through the same lense as they saw the Iraq invasion in 2003, as ‘an unjust imperial war.’ This is one of the main reasons for the big clash between Stop the War and people supporting the Syrians’ struggle for freedom, dignity, and democracy. I will present my perspective about the Syrian revolution, which might be different to their perspective; it is always helpful to see the other side of the story. Acknowledging our differences can help us to find a common ground and to work together for a just cause. The Syria war is tragic and I am writing to the minds and hearts of peace-loving people to reflect, and to suggest things we can do to help. full: http://www.syriauk.org/2016/01/how-can-stop-war-help-stop-war-in-syria.html _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

POSTING RULES & NOTES #1 YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. #2 This mail-list, like most, is publicly & permanently archived. #3 Subscribe and post under an alias if #2 is a concern. * A third lesson is that 21st century socialism cannot be counterposed to what those like Michael Lebowitz and Marta Harnecker call the “state socialism” of the 20th century. Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador are not socialist countries, but anti-neoliberal capitalist countries with anti-imperialist governments. They cannot be pointed to as new, more democratic models of socialism. http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/01/06/lessons-we-can-learn-from-the-electoral-setback-in-venezuela/ Stansfield Smith, who wrote the crap above, was on Marxmail a while back. I can't remember if he unsubbed or whether I removed him. In any case he is a regular on the Greenleft mailing list where he and other "anti-imperialists" write Baathist talking points that Michael Karadjis takes apart handily. Smith is a really crude thinker. I would say that he is even more of a dumbbell than John Wight and that is quite some accomplishment. In any case, now that the Chavistas are out of office, the vulgar Marxists are on the march. They invoke Lenin's "State and Revolution" without understanding the context. The Soviets were a form of dual power--a challenge to the existing government. But in Venezuela the communes were an arm of the government funded to the tune of billions of dollars and not arising spontaneously. Smith invokes Russia, China, Vietnam and Cuba as "20th century" socialisms that the Chavistas should have synthesized into their Bolivarian project. But in all of these examples, the existing state apparatus had exhausted all their possibilities in the eyes of the masses. In Venezuela parliamentary democracy had not reached such a dead end. The problem with Smith and his co-religionists is frustration with objective reality. Instead of trying to develop strategy and tactics geared to that reality, they project solutions that are posited as ideals. There is a word for that actually: idealism. _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

In my comic book memoir, I wrote about my relationship with a comrade in Houston who had worked as a topless dancer before I got to town. After she dropped out of the SWP, she rejoined the Christians and Missionary Alliance that her parents worked for when she was young. They were the Singing Jenkins and used to perform at church revival meetings. She had just broken up with her husband who was the YSA organizer in Houston. And both were students at Wheaton where they first began radicalizing. They joined our movement at U. of Michigan, however. That will give you an idea of the breadth and the depth of the 60s radicalization. It even touched a solipsitic beatnik like me. _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

Thank you. What though of Caliban's great speech? - *CALIBAN* Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises, Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not. Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices That, if I then had waked after long sleep, Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming, The clouds methought would open and show riches Ready to drop upon me that, when I waked, I cried to dream again. There is so much in this. To begin with we have the achievement of subject-object identity where Caliban feels and knows and lives the truth that nature is enchanted. Then we have the highlighting of the fears and hostility of modernity towards nature. These vary same fears lie behind the war we have declared on nature. This, as all on this list know, is a wear nature will win. But even more remarkable for me is the construction of Caliban, only for a moment admittedly, as the moral and aesthetic superior of the colonist, because in Caliban's speech the moral and the aesthetic come into harmony comradely Gary _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
