And when the U.S. embargo is lifted, Cuba - which for much of the 19th
and 20th centuries was the Caribbean’s predominant economy — is likely
to take a growing bite out of Puerto Rico’s fortunes, in tourism,
manufacturing and services. And that’s before accounting for Puerto
Rico’s existing fiscal straits, which will lead to shrinking government
services, higher costs imposed by utilities under siege from creditors
and a string of broken social promises and busted pensions.

True, Cubans don’t have democracy. Then again, at the national level,
neither do Puerto Ricans: Despite being U.S. citizens, they can’t vote
for president or in Congress, which these days mostly ignores them.
Cubans may face the threat of arbitrary detention and abuse. But they’re
much less likely than Puerto Ricans to be shot dead on the street, or to
be victimized by drug traffickers or other criminals.

In fact, by many other yardsticks, you’re better off being born in Cuba
than Puerto Rico. Don’t take my word for it. Look at the World Factbook
put out by those raving socialists at the Central Intelligence Agency.
Lower infant mortality? Check! Same with lower unemployment, higher
literacy, and a lower overall death rate.

Indeed. Adam Booth, speaking for the Trotskyist International Marxist
Tendency, claims to be able to make important advances in science without
knowing the facts of the matter. This is truly ludicrous. Thus he writes in
"The Crisis of Cosmology -- Part Three" that

"We do not claim to have the mathematical tools or the great wealth of
scientific knowledge and facts that the academic community of theoretical
physicists has at its disposal. Nor do we claim to have all the answers or
even fully worked out alternative to the current theories.

"For decades, however, we have carefully followed scientific developments and
have made important contributions towards the many debates that have
emerged."

This is opposed to how Lenin treated the revolutions in theoretical physics
in "Materialism and Empirio-Criticism". He dealt with the philosophical
consequences of the new developments, but refused to intervene in the
scientific theorizing itself.

Comrades,  Kanhaiya Kumar (KK for short) is aPhD student from
the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi, capital of India.
KK comes from a poor rural background. His is traditionally a communist family
for the last 2 generations. His father used to be daily labourer, but is now
paralyzed and bedridden. His mother works as a social service worker, earning
$50 a month. He able to study on the scholarship of about $60 per month from
the University. He is president of the University Students Union, which is
dominated by Leftist students, and the rightist BJPs student wing is able to
win only one position.
He was arrested on Feb 9th on Charges of sedition. Some students had protested
against the hanging of Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri, who was alleged to have a role
in the 2002 terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament. Sensing trouble, as
Students Union president, he went there to dissuade Ultra-Left and BJP student
groups from resorting to fistfight. He had sent away the warring groups and
then addressed the students with the now famous speech, along with the song
Aazadi (freedom):We want freedom from hunger   freedom from
capitalism   freedom from from unemployment
freedom from fundamentalism   freedom from upper
caste discrimination..as the song goes. By now, this song has become the anthem
of students and youth all across the country. Remember that Hindi is not
understood in South and East India, but they translated the song and are
singing in all colleges. It has become a rage.To cut the long story short,
pro-government media seized the opportunity and began screening doctored videos
showing KK allegedly shouting anti-India slogans. Shouting anti-government
slogans in itself does not come under the sedition law, but what is interesting
is an avalanche of propaganda, declaring communists as traitors and
anti-nationals. Goons wearing lawyers dress had attacked and beaten up
professors and fellow students, and journalist in the court premises, in the
presence of the judge. The Supreme court took notice and sent a team of eminent
lawyers to file a report of what happened at the local court. The next day, as
KK was brought for for the trial, the same lawyer goons grabbed him from the
police custody and and beat him. The police remained mute spectators. The team
of lawyers sent by the Supreme Court were also attacked and journalist were
beaten up.With BJPs fascist pogrom in full swing, public opinion turned against
them and there was a groundswell of support for KK. Finally, on March 2nd he
was given 6 months conditional bail. On 3rd March, when he returned to his JNU
campus, he was given a heroes welcome, where he delivered an electrifying
speech, which became an instant hit all across the country. All media channels
had broadcast his speech and he had given 60 interviews in the next 10 days.
KKs name had become a household name and the discourse on Left had once again
become mainstream. But all that a little later. Here is an English transcript of

In the article Lou linked to, Robert Reich does not say a word about the
radical switch away from fossil fuels that is necessary. This requires
consumption of less stuff and more free time, retraining of the workers
who are now working for fossil fuels and auto industries, much more
development aid based on green technologies, etc. If we wait with these
changes until after 2020, so much global warming will be baked into the
environment that all we can do is watch how the planet becomes more and
more un-inhabitable for humans over the following decades, as we pass
the 2, 3, 4 degree Celsius mark, and apply palliative measures. We will
have missed our change to prevent the end of our civilization. Radical
action is required now, before things get so bad that business as usual
is no longer possible. If that happens what Robert Reich describes and
nothing more, we are screwed.

We are living in a very peculiar time. You didn't need me to tell you
that. With Donald Trump leading on one side and a 74-year-old man who
has proclaimed to be a democratic socialist for decades competing on the
other, it's clear that if we were ever going to try something truly
revolutionary, now would be the time to do so.

I'll leave you with these closing words from Michelle Alexander:

"Maybe we’ll all continue to play along and pretend that we don’t know
how it will turn out in the end. Hopefully, one day, we’ll muster the
courage to join together in a revolutionary movement with people of all
colors who believe that basic human rights and economic, racial, and
gender justice are not unreasonable, pie-in-the-sky goals. After decades
of getting played, the sleeping giant just might wake up, stretch its
limbs, and tell both parties: Game over. Move aside. It’s time to
reshuffle this deck."

[Marxism] Fwd: How Syrian Kurds view attacks on opposition areas

Although the clashes were widely reported, there has been hardly any
in-depth coverage on how the fighting was perceived by Kurds themselves.
Mustafa, a Kurdish activist affiliated with the PYD, supports the SDF
move as a necessary step to connect the two autonomous Kurdish cantons
in Aleppo, Afrin and Kobane. He argues: “Afrin was besieged more than
once by Al-Nusra Front and other groups based in Azaz after they failed
to occupy it. Therefore, our only hope is to connect Afrin to other
Kurdish areas so they cannot besiege us in the future.”

Although other Kurds share Mustafa’s concerns regarding the threat from
extremist groups, they disagree with him on how to overcome that
insecurity. Aziz, a Kurdish activist from Afrin, believes that Kurds
will only feel safe when they have healthy relations with other
communities in Syria. “I don’t think that we will be safe if we counter
the discrimination we shared with other Syrians under Assad’s rule with
another discrimination against other communities who are fighting for
the same cause,” the activist said. “I will only feel safe when I know
that my neighbor has my back and he sees me as a friend, not as an
enemy.” Those who share these views disagree with SDF attacks on
opposition, arguing that securing those areas will prove more difficult
than seizing them, which could lead to a drawn-out conflict with Arab
armed groups.

Moreover, other Kurdish activists blamed the PYD for the current
situation. Zara, a Kurdish human rights activist, referred to the
alleged agreement between the PYD and the Syrian regime that allowed the
former to control Kurdish areas in order to prevent them from joining
the revolution against the regime. "The PYD’s affiliation with the
Syrian regime made opposition groups suspicious of Kurdish intentions,
which allowed opportunists to take advantage of that suspicion to attack
Kurdish areas,” Zara argued. It is also not clear for Zara what the U.S.
is trying to achieve by supporting groups inside Syria and allowing them
to fight each other instead of focusing on fighting ISIS. “I don’t
understand the US strategy in Syria,” the human right activist stated.
“They arm the SDF and other opposition groups to fight ISIS.
Nevertheless, when these groups start fighting each other, the US does
nothing to stop them, which makes things worse.”
