(What was that about regime change again?)

The White House worked behind the scenes last week to prevent a
bipartisan bill to sanction the Assad regime for war crimes and
atrocities against civilians from getting a vote in the House of
Representatives. The Democratic leadership bowed to White House pressure
and withdrew its support for voting on the bill for now.

Jon Flanders is a veteran socialist and trade union activist. Our
conversation covered the following topics:

1. The Flander's family New England stock

2. How he became a socialist

3. How he became a diesel locomotive mechanic

4. His experience with Mayor Bernie Sanders in Burlington, Vermont

5. What he makes of white working class support for Donald Trump

6. Looking ahead to a new stage in the class struggle

I have a fairly extensive library that I can donate (bequeath more
likely) to Holt including M-E Collected Works, and much old MR in attic.
I have been a subscriber since the 50s, but may have mislaid some in
moving. Also selected years of NLR, much of SR and some HM. I'll try to
catalog in the next week or so. I put this on this list rather than
contacting David to suggest that others might do likewise. Also there
may be others here who want what I have that Holt may not need.

Misleading title. They had been prisoners but were conscripted into

I too would like them, but live in New York. Perhaps someone is willing to

Poor Gramsci. While alive he had to cope with fascist repression and
imprisonment and in death he's been snatched by the postmodernists and the
radical democracy - ie let's leave capitalist property relations as they
are - brigade/s.

Gramsci, however, was a revolutionary, vitally concerned with how the
capitalist class rules in the developed capitalist world - ie not by
repression alone but, largely, by ideological dominance.

At the same time, Gramsci was concerned with issues of dual power, an
important concept we hear very, very little of today.

Every country has its own particularities and one of NZ's is perhaps that
it is the least politicised society in the world. Despite a lot of blows
being delivered against the working class over the last 25 years there is
very little resistance. The 'new normal' is a prolonged period of very
little struggle by the working class and all-round lowered horizons.

This article is four years old but tries to explore what happened. NZ is
an extreme case, but it's not entirely alone:

>Ironically, one defender of the owner of The Commons decided to build on
Right-wing tactics of misinformation by inverting the meaning of words when
he absurdly claimed that “There are zionist-fascists who are trying to
destroy The Brooklyn Commons as a venue for radical events.” Huh? People
who oppose neo-Nazism, and condemn anti-Semitism on a Left basis, are
fascists — and Zionists! Truly remarkable. That statement can be dismissed
as the desperate agitprop of an individual who has burned many a bridge.

Lost all credibility with me here. That is transparently what those who
initially sounded the alarm about the Commons and tried to tar the left as
a whole were: Zionists who wanted to tar the Commons as a venue for radical
events, specifically Sieradski, not to mention at least one person from the
Anti-Defamation League and a few other marginal Zio-left figures whose only
relevance appears to be shouting about even more marginal figures.

The rest of the article sounds like same obsessive attempt to tarnish the
Left for the failure to address a problem that the liberal and white left
has shamelessly exaggerated for years. The fact that this moron can
generate this much discussion and this many public disavowals, including
from groups that have no relation to the venue, considering the
pervasiveness of other forms of intolerance on the Left that have become
staples, particularly Islamophobia, shows how misguided these "critiques"
are. Note also at one point the author suggests that the "5 dancing
Israelis" motif used in 9/11 conspiracy theories is a sign of
anti-Semitism. The fact that 5 Israeli men were arrested on 9/11 during a
massive immigration sweep for "suspicious behavior" is a fact
; whether or
not it proves Israel did 9/11 is another thing. I'm not sure how the author
can begin the piece by admitting that there are legitimate motives for
people to be suspicious about 9/11 and then conclude by suggesting that a
using a story about alleged government agents is a sign of racism.
