Some things to provide context:

1 - This suburb area residents are mainly reactionary

2 - The schools of Peperdine and Lutheran Universities are dominated by
evangelical conservatives

3 - Country Western Music mainly attracts right wingers in this part of
Southern California

Meltdown at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission
by KARL GROSSMAN

The resignation last week of the chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission is another demonstration of the bankrupt basis of the NRC.
Gregory Jaczko repeatedly called for the NRC to apply “lessons learned”
from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant disaster in Japan. And, for
that, the nuclear industry—quite successfully—went after him fiercely.

The New York Times in an editorial over the weekend said that President
Obama’s choice to replace Jaczko, Allison McFarlane, “will need to be as
independent and aggressive as Dr. Jaczko.”

That misses the institutional point.

The NRC was created in 1974 when Congress abolished the U.S. Atomic
Energy Commission after deciding that the AEC’s dual missions of
promoting and at the same time regulating nuclear power were deemed a
conflict of interest. The AEC was replaced by the NRC which was to
regulate nuclear power, and a Department of Energy was later formed to
advocate for it.

However, the same extreme pro-nuclear culture of the AEC continued on at
the NRC. It has partnered with the DOE in promoting nuclear power.

It's probably still appropriate to call it a "probe," but they've cranked
out enough indictments and gotten some convictions with guilty pleas.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Counsel_investigation_(2017%E2%80%93present)

I don't honestly think that there's any "alleged" about criminal activities
by the Trump machine in cooperation with the Russians, though we have yet
to see how extensive it was. I personally think the whole lot of them
think themselves above the law. We should view the Mueller investigation
pretty much like the investigation of the state of Illinois into what they
accurately called the "police riot" in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic
National convention.

What Mueller and his people find (or any Congressional committee may find)
could lead to either criminal prosecution or impeachment and removal from
office. (The prosecution of a seated president is rather controversial and
remains to be settled.) Your discussion of a two-thirds vote of the Senate
indicates that you mean to be asking about the trial of a president after
articles of impeachment are adopted by the House of Representatives.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_in_the_United_States

An honest investigation would get the truth--the kind of investigation
Illinois did in 1968 but the Democratic-dominated Congress didn't really do
over Watergate, hardly pretended to do with Iran-Contra, and didn't even
bother faking it over the WMD lies of Dubya.

Are you asking about the "practical value" of the truth?

Cheers,
Mark L.

Some times people wake up and realize their long held positions, when faced
with evidence to the contrary, were wrong.
--David Walters
Why We’re Taking a Hard Look at Nuclear Power Plant Closures

A new UCS report, *The Nuclear Power Dilemma: Declining Profits, Plant
Closures, and the Threat of Rising Carbon Emissions
*, indicates that more than 22
percent of total US nuclear capacity is unprofitable or scheduled to close
over the next five to 10 years. The report also indicates that without new
policies, the electricity generated by these and other marginally economic
nuclear plants is likely to be replaced in large part with natural
gas-fired generation (although this will vary from plant to plant). If this
occurs, cumulative carbon emissions in the electric sector could increase
by up to 6 percent between 2018 and 2035.

Hi all,

There are a number of nationwide protests taking place tonight as Trump has
replaced Jeff Sessions with Matthew Whitaker, who is a Trump loyalist who
likely will not recuse himself from the FBI investigation into Trump's
alleged Russia-related crimes.

I am honestly a bit confused and was wondering what others think about
this. Isn't it the case that regardless of what the Mueller probe uncovers,
it would require a 2/3 majority in the Senate to actually convict Trump and
force him to resign? In which case, what practical value does the Mueller
probe serve, and why is it so important that it continue if it cannot
guarantee Trump's resignation even if damning evidence of impeachable
offenses is uncovered?

Thanks,

Amith R. Gupta

Hi Ken,

Addicted to War is an excellent educational tool. It may be a little out of
date today. We used it in a city-wide proposition (“College Not Combat,”
Proposition I) in 2005 against JROTC in the high-schools, which won by 60
percent of the vote. Unfortunately, it was just an “opinion” proposition, so
JROTC is still alive and well in our high-schools in San Francisco.

As part of our campaign (a united front of anti-war and socialist groups—we had
to collect, as I recall, over 200,000 signatures to get it on the ballot.) We
set up tables at the schools on “career days” when the U.S. military showed up
in force along with the colleges and businesses.

We had these books on our table along with other informational flyers to hand
out to students warning them of the lies the military may tell them such as,
“you have the right to leave the military honorably any time you want.” And,
“you don’t have to go into combat if you don’t want to.”

All the various recruiters handed out “freebees” to students, pens, notebooks,
etc., but the military handed out shopping-bags full of bells and whistles—way
more than anyone else did to entice the kids—all five branches of the military
attended and each handed out separate bags of stuff.

This week I was given a copy of Addicted to War, an illustrated exposé by Joel
Andreas.
The man who gave it to me bought it in bulk to circulate it cheaply.

It seems familiar, in that the graphics are very recognizable. But I had not
read it before.
On the cover it says there are 450,000 in print worldwide. There is an
impressive list of supporters.

I’d like to ask people on this list what they think of it as an educating tool.

In the United States, any public response will have to contend with
Trump’s rhetoric of invasion, war, and border militarization. Also
notable, however, is the lack of any substantive response by the
Democratic Party. Having decided to focus on healthcare for the
midterms, Democrats have apparently not even responded to Trump’s
threats of emergency measures intended to prevent those travelling in
the caravan from making entry. These include a Muslim Ban-style
suspension of all entry at the U.S.–Mexico border; the deployment of
more than 5,000 troops to the border already, with 2,000 or so planned
in coming days, and a projected total of 15,000 (more than the United
States has deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan); the potential violation of
the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 (which restricts the use of military
forces to enforce domestic policy); and a set of armed training
exercises designed for media spectacle and to provide those pointlessly
deployed troops with something to occupy their time. Yet even if these
actions are more GOTV mobilizing devices than anything else, the
Democratic silence is symptomatic of the fact that that party has little
interest in an alternative position on immigration, since they live in
fear of losing centrist voters who are supposed to have reasonable
objections to the idea of an open border. Thus, even as the DHS
Secretary says, “You will not get in” – disregarding the fact that, at a
minimum, people in the caravan have claims to refugee status that the
United States is bound by international law to entertain – the Democrats
would rather avoid the topic.

We speak of the United States as we write from there, most of us. The
scenario we describe is not limited to that wheezing empire, however.
Centrisms die across the globe. The collapse of liberal, of Keynesian,
of “progressive” social compacts is a feature of our age. Even the
social democratic redoubt of Scandinavia now drifts and lurches
rightward, ethnic and economic nationalisms calling like twin magnets.
In the wealthy nations, the course is common enough. Without economic
development, there are no possibilities for the social progress that we
once found routine. The appeals to liberalisms left and right, to the
norms and conventions of a century’s official politics, grow all the
more desperate as the possibilities of such politics vanish. Everywhere
morbid symptoms bloom. In the place of conservatism, we witness the rise
of a white revanchism bent on rolling back the reforms of eras past
until Jim Crow walks a landscape devoid of labor unions, until women are
driven back to the kitchen, queer people back to the closet, trans
people out of restrooms. On the left, we must admit, congruent
nostalgias dominate. The politics of the thirties and sixties, a
workers’ movement and a technocratic social democracy, rise up like
phantoms. They rise up into a world which lacks the affordances of those
moments almost entirely; they feel solid and familiar to the exact
extent that they are airy impossibilities.

The geniuses on MSNBC this morning are of one mind. Yesterday, it was one
thing, but this morning they're talking as though the Democrats didn't
really do that well and it was all the fault of Elizabeth Warren, Bernie
Sanders, etc. Remember these are the same numbskulls who blamed Nader for
Gore's loss (which wasn't a loss) in Florida back in 2000. You're never
going to be "not too progressive" enough for these people.

And, of course, they share the perspecti9ve of the Democratic establishment.
