[Marxism] Fascism in full bloom

As the NYT report says, Modi and his Fascist goons believe that they can
suppress dissent by violence.
Democracy in India is on sound footing and the millions who are coming out into
the streets across the length and breadth of the
country is ample evidence that fascism will no have an easy going. Common
citizens till now remained nonchalant as the Hindu
Nationalist BJP acquired power by employing devious means. Many people voted
for BJP attracted by the nationalist rhetoric of Modi
and his vitriol against Pakistan.but now, with the introduction of Citizenship
Amendment Act, people are realizing that Muslims will
be targeted much like the Jews in Hitler's Germany. And the irony is that when
this law, in its previous avatar was implemented in
Assam, the state bordering Bangladesh, on the plea that a large number of
Muslims had infiltrated in to the country, more Hindus lost
their citizenship than Muslims. And there was an outcry from the supporters of
the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) itself.
And now, Amit Shah, the right-hand man of Modi and the Interior Minister is
advocating that the citizenship verification would be
taken up in all over the country, even in those states which saw no
infiltration from outside the borders, and that Non-Muslims need
not worry, he was reinforcing the fear of many that the Law will discriminate
against 180 million Muslims and will ultimately deprive
them of Indian citizenship. Increasing provocative statements from Law makers
and leaders of BJP, claiming that the whole bunch of
Muslims will be dumped in to Pakistan had made the mood of the people turn
sour. People in hundreds of thousands are holding rallies
and day and night vigils in biting  2 Deg,C cold in Delhi and other Northern
towns. And what is worrying Modi and his government is
that there are more Hindus rallying against his Government, decrying
discrimination on the basis of religion. It shows that democratic
culture is deep-rooted in India, which is historically home to many religions.
Rare display of solidarity is witnessed in different parts
of the country. Fearing that Hindu Nationalist RSS goons might attack, Hindus
and Sikhs stood guard while Muslims were offering
their Friday prayers in Delhi. And in the state of Kerala, a church has invited
Muslim brothers to offer their prayers in its premises.
When a TV Channel reporter said that only Muslims are protesting, an angry
young man, took off his shirt and displayed his sacred
thread which Hindu Brahmins wear.

Soleimani was a complicated man, a man of the religious far right, an
authoritarian. Although I think it is nonsense to speak of him committing
terrorism, he did commit war crimes. I am not sure he is responsible for
nearly as many deaths as George W. Bush, though. In this essay I’m not
defending Soleimani, I’m only trying to complicate the glib story being
pushed at us by the Trump administration, which can’t speak two sentences
without telling four lies. The best antidote to black and white
authoritarian views of the world is an attention to irony and ambiguity.

Stephen Lendman

A Reuters report was similar, saying the Ukraine aircraft “was likely brought
down by an Iranian missile,” citing Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and
“intelligence from Canadian and other (unnamed) sources.”

Iranian officials debunked false claims about a missile or rocket downing the
Ukraine airliner.

Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization head Ali Abedzadeh said the following:

“From a scientific viewpoint, it is impossible that a missile hit the Ukrainian
plane,” adding:

“The plane caught fire three minutes into the flight, according to what the
witnesses have reported and the data collected from the parts of the airplane.”

“The pilot tried to return the airplane at the altitude of 8,000 feet, but due
to the fire, the airplane crashed and exploded.”

“We can say that the airplane, considering the kind of the crash and the
pilot’s efforts to return it to Imam Khomeini airport, didn’t explode in the
air. So, the allegation that it was hit by missiles is totally ruled out.”

“(B)ecause the airplane was Ukrainian, Ukraine is obliged to cooperate with us,
and has started cooperation. Their team of experts has arrived in Tehran, and
we have coordinated the issue with them on different aspects.”

“Iranian experts and the Ukrainian ones have had a meeting so that we could
determine the cause of the incident in cooperation with the Ukrainian side.”

An official investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

On Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi dismissed false
accusations about an IRGC missile downing the Ukraine airliner.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has begun investigation into the cause of this
plane crash in accordance with the international standards and the ICAO’s
(International Civil Aviation Organization’s) criteria, and has invited
Ukraine, as the owner of the plane, and the Boeing company, as the plane
manufacturer, to take part in the investigation,” he explained, adding:

“The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the presence of experts from the
countries whose nationals have been killed in the tragic incident, and requests
the Canadian prime minister and any other government with information about
this issue to give the information to the committee investigating the incident
in Iran.”

Ukraine Airlines Flight 752 crashed hours after Iranian missiles struck two US
bases in Iraq.

They were launched in retaliation for the Trump regime’s assassination of IRGC
Quds Force commander General Qassem Soleimani — an act of war by the US against
Iran.

Both incidents were unrelated, no credible evidence suggesting otherwise.

On Thursday, IRGC spokesman Abolfazl Shekarchi debunked false accusations,
saying:

Western sources “are spreading propaganda that the Ukrainian flight was
targeted. This is ridiculous,” adding:

“Most of the passengers on this flight were our valued young Iranian men and
women.

“Whatever we do, we do it for the protection and defense of our country and our
people.”

If the airliner was struck by a missile, it likely would have broken apart in
flight which no evidence suggests happened.

Separately, Ukrainian authorities ruled out terrorism, suggesting likely engine
failure, what an analysis of the crash site and black boxes aboard the doomed
aircraft will likely determine.

Falsely claiming an Iranian missile may have brought down Ukraine Airlines
Flight 752 is similar to wrongfully accusing Russia for downing Malaysian
Airlines MH17 on July 17, 2014 in eastern Ukraine airspace.

The latter Big Lie persists despite no credible evidence proving it, plenty of
evidence debunking it.

Investigations of commercial airline crashes take considerable time to complete.

It’ll likely be months before it’s officially known why Ukraine Airlines Flight
752 went down.

There were no credible reports of satellite images showing one or more missiles
in Iranian airspace before the Ukraine airliner crashed.

When the cause is determined and publicly announced, it’ll no doubt cite a
technical malfunction, not an Iranian missile responsible for what happened.

A Final Comment

On Friday, Press TV quoted Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization head Ali
Abedzadeh, saying the following:

NY Times, Jan. 11, 2020
Fieldston, Elite Private School, Faces Backlash From Jewish Parents
By Eliza Shapiro

Ethical Culture Fieldston, one of New York City’s most proudly
progressive private schools, is facing a backlash over its handling of
race, religion and ethnicity for the second time in less than a year.

In the past few months, some Jewish parents have accused school
administrators of not acting aggressively enough to address what the
parents said were anti-Semitic comments by at least one teacher and a
guest speaker.

The tensions boiled over on Thursday, when the school fired a history
teacher who has criticized Israel in school and on a personal Twitter
account.

The dismissal of the teacher, J.B. Brager, which came after an assembly
focused on anti-Semitism and anti-bias training, was first reported by
the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. The move quickly touched off a protest by
Fieldston graduates.

Lauren Coulston, a spokeswoman for the school, declined to discuss the
precise reasons for the firing, saying that Fieldston “does not comment
on personnel matters.”

“We can reaffirm, however, that the school does not tolerate hurtful
offensive or exclusionary content or comments from any member of the
community,” Ms. Coulston said on Friday. “Students, parents, employees,
and other members of our community all face consequences for behavior of
this nature.”

The episode comes at a highly charged moment for the school, and for New
York.

Fieldston spent much of last year trying to contain a rebellion by its
students, some of whom locked themselves in buildings on the school’s
campus in the Riverdale section of the Bronx in March to protest what
they said was a racist school culture.

The school agreed to many of the students’ demands, including anti-bias
training and a commitment to hire more teachers of color.

But the fragile peace that followed was short-lived. The student
protests about perceived racism against people of color soon gave way to
anger among Jewish parents concerned about anti-Semitism.

In November, Kayum Ahmed, a director at the Open Society Foundations
philanthropic organization who had been invited to speak at an assembly
at the high school, responded to a student’s question about South Africa
by linking what Jews endured during the Holocaust to violence against
Palestinians in Israel.

Some parents, offended by the comment, urged school leaders to issue a
forceful statement condemning it. The debate over Mr. Ahmed’s remarks
was reported by the online publication Tablet as well as the Washington
Free Beacon. Mr. Ahmed did not respond to a request for comment on Friday.

A few days after the assembly, the head of the school, Jessica Bagby,
and the high school principal, Nigel Furlonge, sent an email to students
and parents calling Mr. Ahmed’s remarks “deeply hurtful.” The school,
Ms. Bagby and Mr. Furlonge wrote, “vehemently opposes anti-Jewish words,
deeds, and sentiment.”

Before the winter break, Fieldston scheduled an assembly focused on
anti-Semitism for Thursday, Jan. 9, and announced that two Reform Jewish
rabbis would speak.

Fieldston was founded in the late 19th century by Felix Adler, a Jewish
educator, and has long served a significant number of Jewish students.
But parents’ concerns that the school has looked the other way on
anti-Semitism have plagued Ms. Bagby throughout her four-year tenure.

The New York Times reported in 2017 that she had referred privately to
“Zionist” parents raising questions about aspects of the school’s
experimental approach to combating racism.

The comment alarmed George Burns, the principal of Fieldston’s lower
school at the time, The Times reported. Mr. Burns’s unexpected departure
that year prompted a torrent of anger from parents, teachers and students.

Fieldston, which has around 1,700 students from prekindergarten through
12th grade and annual tuition of about $53,000, is substantially more
racially diverse than many other private schools in the city, and it
awards more than $14 million a year in financial aid.

The debate at the school is playing out against a backdrop of heightened
tensions among Jewish residents of New York and the surrounding area.

Orthodox Jews have faced a series of violent anti-Semitic attacks across
the city and state in recent weeks, prompting local officials to
increase security in neighborhoods with large Jewish populations.

This week, tens of thousands of people marched against anti-Semitism in
New York City. In an email this month, Ms. Bagby encouraged Fieldston
families to join the march.

Behind Campus Attack in India, Some See a Far-Right Agenda
By Kai Schultz and Suhasini Raj

NEW DELHI — For decades, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party and its
affiliates have struggled to control one of India’s most fertile
ideological recruiting grounds: university campuses.

That project erupted in violence last weekend, as masked men and women
stormed the New Delhi campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University, one of
India’s premier liberal institutions.

Witnesses said police officers stood by as students were attacked with
rods and bricks. Some assailants shouted slogans associated with Mr.
Modi’s governing party and its parent organization, the Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh, or R.S.S., which for decades has aspired to turn
India into a Hindu nation.

“They pelted stones at us, stones half the size of bricks,” said
Sucharita Sen, a geography professor, who was struck in the head and
needed stitches. She was bleeding profusely, she said, adding: “I saw
the face of terror.”

Mr. Modi’s government initially condemned the violence. But some
ministers, along with others in the governing Bharatiya Janata Party,
tried to justify it. “For too long, Leftists have been treated with kid
gloves,” the party’s branch in the state of Karnataka said on Twitter.
“No wonder this ‘good for nothing breed’ has grown like a Weed.”

As protests continue across India against Mr. Modi’s contentious
citizenship law, universities have become targets, with far-right groups
accused of attacking places seen as hot spots for “antinational”
activism. Some analysts saw the well-orchestrated attack on Sunday as
something more: a watershed in the ascendant Hindu nationalist
movement’s fight for control over the influential university, and over
Indian higher education more broadly.

“For the Modi government, J.N.U. has been a symbol of the territory they
haven’t been able to capture,” said Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, an author who
has studied the R.S.S. for years. “They are projecting it as a symbol of
everything that is bad in this country, and that is why they need to
destroy it.”

Mr. Mukhopadhyay said the attack was a precursor to shutting down the
university and “trying to reshape it.”

The university is named for Jawaharlal Nehru, one of India’s founding
fathers, who resisted the idea of establishing a religious state. Over
the years, the campus cultivated a reputation for supporting resistance
movements led by minorities and questioning revisionist histories of
India pushed by far-right Hindus.

Since Mr. Modi became prime minister in 2014, the Hindu right’s battle
for influence over young minds has intensified. Observers say that by
2016, Jawaharlal Nehru University had become a much more frequent topic
of debate among high-ranking officials in the governing party, who
questioned the morality of the students and their education.

Students and faculty at the university said freedoms there had eroded
since the election of Mr. Modi, whose government has appointed
R.S.S.-affiliated administrators to the university. In the hours after
Sunday’s attack, staunch supporters of Mr. Modi’s party called for the
university to be closed.

While leftist ideas have long prevailed at the university and many of
India’s other leading campuses, the R.S.S. has worked to inculcate its
far-right ideology at a much younger age. It runs its own network of
schools, and encourages children to join programs for physical training
interspersed with Hindu religious rituals.

At the university level, the R.S.S. oversees the Akhil Bharatiya
Vidyarthi Parishad, one of India’s oldest and largest student unions.
That group at first denied involvement in the Sunday attack, blaming it
on “commie goons.”

But Anima Sonkar, a secretary for the group, said in a television
interview on Monday that two armed men seen in a video of the assault
were members of the organization. She said they had carried weapons for
“self-defense,” traveling in groups and carrying rods, and in one case,
acid.

Since protests began in India last month over the Citizenship Amendment
Act passed by Parliament — which many see as blatantly discriminatory
toward Muslims and a threat to the nation’s secular foundation — most
eruptions of violence have been blamed on the police, who have been
accused of torturing teenage demonstrators, lobbing tear gas canisters
into a college library and killing protesters.

But the attack at Jawaharlal Nehru University, where a number of rallies
against the law have been held, suggested that extremist outfits had
started mobilizing against protesters, with the
