It is my understanding that
dogs can understand up to several
hundred words.  They are also excellent
readers of human body language.

I'll take a look.

I'm not an expert, but from my experience, cats are less responsive to
word symbols than dogs. Note that even dogs can learn a small number
of symbols. They respond to their names.
