Also, if you want to help, the American Red Cross is taking donations to
help in the disaster relief.
Today, at Champaign, a flight to Seattle was ordered to the ground. My wife
and I got a call from the Red Cross that they needed mental health
volunteers. I went along as a family services volunteer. When we got
there, the plane had landed, people were getting their luggage and wondering
what to do next. Red Cross and other local volunteers were making
arrangements to get passengers lodging. For the ones with money and no max
on their cards it was more of an irritation. But there were those going to
weddings or other locations who were financially limited. Some were clearly
upset. Red Cross arranged for lodging and a perdiem until the airlines came
through.
Most of this takes money. Much of the work is done by volunteers who work
with the few paid staff. So if you want to help, you can call your local
Red Cross and donate. Or if you are retired or in a semi-retired state,
call and offer to become a volunteer. Training is offered to work in local,
state and national disaster relief operations.
