“UNTIL the 1970s, Basra’s climate was like southern Europe’s,” recalls
Shukri Al-Hassan, an ecology professor in the Iraqi port city. Basra, he
remembers, had so many canals that Iraqis dubbed it the Venice of the
Middle East. Its Shatt al-Arab river watered copious marshlands, and in the
1970s irrigated some 10m palms, whose dates were considered the world’s
finest. But war, salty water seeping in from the sea because of upriver
dams, and oil exploration which has pushed farmers off their land have
taken their toll. Most of the wetlands and orchards are now desert. Iraq
now averages a sand- or dust-storm once every three days. And this month
Basra’s temperature reached 53.9ºC, a record beaten only by Kuwait and
California’s Death Valley (and the latter figure is disputed). “Analysis of
data suggests that since the 1970s the frequency of heat extremes has
increased, while cool summer days and nights have decreased,” says Gemma
Shepherd, who works for the UN’s Early Warning and Assessment Environment
Programme in Nairobi.

Unlike other parts of the world where climate change has led to milder
winters, in the Middle East it has intensified summer extremes, repeated
studies show. Even on the Middle East’s cooler western edge, temperatures
in Morocco reached 47°C. Daytime highs, notes an academic study published
in the Netherlands in April, could rise by 7ºC by the end of the century.
Another UN study predicted Iraq’s sandstorms would increase from 120 to 300
per year. The region also has fewer coping mechanisms than before.
Population increase has exhausted water supply, leaving two-thirds of the
countries in the Arabian Peninsula and the “fertile crescent” without the
minimum viable for human survival, according to UN figures. Sana’a, the
capital of Yemen, is set to run out of water in 2019 or perhaps earlier. In
Taiz, 160 (260km) miles to the south, the water table has already
collapsed. Some people have air-conditioners, but power cuts—of up 16 hours
a day in southern Iraq—make them useless. Baghdadis blister their fingers
on door-knobs.

They are the lucky ones. The Middle East is home to the world’s largest
proportion (39%) of refugees. Hundreds of thousands live in tent cities.
“If the wind blows from the north, it brings the gas from Qurna field,”
says a librarian in a village north of Basra. “If it blows from the south,
it’s heavy with gas from Majnoun.”

Environmental degradation is not just making life uncomfortable. The UN’s
Environmental Agency (UNEA) released a report in May calculating that the
harsh climate claims 230,000 lives annually in West Asia (the Arabian
Peninsula and the fertile crescent), making it a greater killer than war.
By somewhere between 2070 and 2100, predicts Dr Elfatih Eltahir, professor
of climate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the temperature in
much of the Gulf could have reached levels beyond which any exposure for
more than six hours would be intolerable even for the fittest of humans.
Current highs might seem like a normal summer day. Mecca’s outdoor
pilgrimage could become hazardous. “We’re seeing just the tip of the
iceberg,” he adds. “Extreme temperatures will be much worse in the future.”

In many ways, the region has made things worse than they need be.
Over-irrigation has dried up lakes and turned seas into dustbowls. The Dead
Sea is shrinking by a metre a year. Oil has made much of the Gulf
fantastically wealthy. But like a modern-day Midas touch, its by-products
threaten to choke it. Rising sea-levels could sink up to 11% of Bahrain by
the end of the century, according to climate-change projections. War and
urbanisation have combined to chase the rural population from the land. As
desertification accelerates, sandstorms lift radioactive war detritus into
the air. And war prevents implementation of counter-measures like tree
planting. The bulk of the dustclouds come from the Sahara desert, but
“because the eastern edges are in conflict zones, you can’t get to the land
to intervene with remedies,” says Jacquie McGlade, chief scientist with the
UN’s Environment Programme.

Richer states can pay to insulate themselves with artificial environments.
In Kuwait, which recorded highs 0.1°C above Basra’s this week, malls turn

The art of English writing

Urgent intervention of teachers, at school and college/university levels,
is needed to inculcate good writing skills.

Only a few schools and colleges in the country actually teach their
students the art of writing the English language. Yet, these educational
institutions expect their students to write ‘good’ descriptive answers,
especially in the humanities and social sciences. Today, college and
university students suffer from poor writing skills because schools choose
to ignore their responsibility to train students in the art of writing.

Writing often becomes a traumatic experience for students due to lack of
practice. True, everyone is not a born writer, but this is a skill that can
be acquired through writing. Any skill, over time, erodes if not put to
use, which applies equally to writing too. Moreover, computers are yet to
replace final assessment exams, which are still handwritten. The fact that
students are more comfortable with typing into computers, than writing in
long hand, makes the three-hour exam an ordeal as they have to over-exert
their hand muscles to write.

Unlike in Western countries, where reading and writing go hand in hand and
are equally important, our education system tolerates all sorts of
‘violations’ to the written format. With the advent of mobiles, the use of
SMS language has prolifically crept into academic writings. Besides
inappropriate vocabulary, several students liberally use abbreviations that
do not necessarily convey their thoughts, adequately or correctly.

In today’s ‘gizmo-obsessed’ age, everything is available in ‘compact’ form
which makes our lives easier and simpler. The click of a button provides
immense information, makes global transactions possible, helps connect with
people from different geographies and what not, all seated inside our home.

Unfortunately, this online information overload also breeds a ‘copy-paste’
generation. In the process, good writing skills get butchered brutally
amongst the student community. This makes teaching English language,
specifically writing skills, that much more of a challenge. Only a
structured and organised piece of writing reflects clarity of thought that
the writer has developed, to ensure coherence and logical flow.

The 20th century Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein aptly stated that
“the limits of your language are the limits of your world.” Language is a
means to express ones’ thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively. The
‘compact generation’ cannot afford to reduce the art of writing to a
‘capsule format’.

The dependence on power point style of presentations lead to its overuse
and wean students away from effective note-taking. In fact, writing most
often gets reduced to bullet points and all etiquette of writing – to
maintain a margin or a proper paragraph format – are blatantly flouted.
What is even more appalling is that most often, students are not even
conscious about these oversights.

Another shocking fact is that students who are weak in writing skills would
have actually scored over 80% in their high school Board exams. The
requirement to read, research and expand the horizon of knowledge gets
drowned in the whirlpool of ‘instant’ information available. As reading
habits deteriorate, it inevitably impacts writing skills too.
Today, English has proved to be a global language and a medium that
connects all academic and professional disciplines. It is necessary to
inculcate good writing skills in students and it is the responsibility of
all subject teachers and not English teachers alone.

Any error in the use of language, even in history, geography, economics or
science assignments cannot be ignored by these subject teachers. It has to
be a shared responsibility. The need to develop sharp and strong writing
skills has to be emphasised and practiced at the school level itself. The
habit of ‘generous’ marking for shoddy writing, should cease.

‘Ethical’ writing

Stress has to be laid on the importance of ‘ethical’ writing which is
integral to research and independent writing. This implies the need to
refrain from mindless acceptance of the printed word and the tendency to
articulate it as one’s own thoughts. Good academic writing should be
incorporated into the curriculum and be made one of the criteria for
students’ evaluation, irrespective of their discipline.

Writing is an art that needs to be nurtured through use, and maintained in
all its purity. To mess with this art, amounts to a ‘criminal offence’.

Dear ravikumar sir,

the problem is not in grub.. instead it may be in the bios mode of laptop..

why cant you upgrade for ubuntu 16.04 which is latest LTS version of
ubuntu..

i suggest you to go to bios settings and find out bios mode first... grub
varies for each type of bios mode.

kalpravriksha supports only specific type of bios.. actually there is no
way to convert your present 14.04 to kalpravriksha directly.. you have to
reinstall it..
