selected filename(s) to bash variable/array

Is there any way in which the currently hilited filename(s) in the directory
list could be made available within a bash variable/array?  I tried the *F2
@* option with /set varname/ and also with /varname =/, but no luck.

Our server donated by RWTH, Germany has blown up. Folks at OSU OSL
(http://osuosl.org/) are willing to provide us with a new server. So
in near time we will migrate to new server (it's will take some time
