Hello,
Does anyone have a controlled vocabulary for a view description field? Or can
anyone point me to a resource for such a vocabulary/taxonomy? We want to clean
up our data and make it more consistent across the board. We currently have a
short list (recto, verso, full view, detail), and then photographers can
manually enter others that are more specific (full view front, full view side
proper left, etc.) and have ended up with a hodgepodge of values.

Many thanks,
Kate Mayo

[MCN-L] Digital image sales/llcensing

2013-01-22 Thread Green, Nahoko
We'd also be interested in hearing from any other institutions who have solved
this problem, as we are looking to automate our licensing operation with an
e-commerce solution.

We have looked at LicenseStream, which appears to have a lot of capabilities,
but it is very expensive.

Recently, we've been looking at Photoshelter.com (which is almost a great
solution), zenfolio.com (again, almost a great solution, though we prefer
Photoshelter). Both sites will allow you to set up a free 2-wk trial. Both
are geared more towards private photographers interested in selling their
photos (prints, products, and digital downloads for licensing) rather than
towards automating more sophisticated licensing operations.

There are also software products for sale, such as Stockbox Photo and Cradoc
FotoBiz (which we have yet to investigate).

If anyone else comes across any other potential solutions, please let us know!

Thanks,

We don't have a perfect solution, but the closest I came was smugmug -
they allow a digital download with whatever licensing levels you'd
like at whatever price structure you choose. You can setup your
account to only allow the digital license downloads - keeping all the
print and trinket options unavailable. Grant it, that has absolutely
no tie-in to an existing asset management system.

Hi Nahoko,

Thank you very much!

Both our collection information system and DAM are Index+ supplied by
System Simulation Limited. I'm sure Heather would be happy to give you
more information on versions etc. if you would like.

The data is exported from these systems as XML by Heather and her team
and then we import it into our Django / MySQL web application using a
process that we custom built. That import process also downloads the
images from the DAM at the appropriate resolution.

The import / export isn't completely automatic ... yet. Although
decoupling the Collections Management System + DAM from the Web
Application is a little clunky it solved far more problems than it
caused by removing runtime dependencies across systems which would have
stopped us delivering the project as quickly (or, perhaps, at all).

When the Collections Management System is upgraded the plan is to update
through a standard harvesting technique such as OAI so that the import /
export process is fully automated and sustainable.

best wishes,

Richard

Thanks, David, for your positive reaction!

We are using Sphinx (http://www.sphinxsearch.com) to manage the
searching and clustering, closely coupled to a Django / MySQL backend.

The Django application provides an API which returns JSON and uses
Sphinx to deal with the searching.

Then the frontend application is PHP Symfony and it makes API calls to
the Django application. The nice thing is that we can then open up
access to the Django app to provide the same API for everyone.

best wishes,

Richard Morgan

Thank you for your kind words. I am glad you like our new site.

I was interested in your comments about the default setting and it has
been a matter of some debate here. My original preference would have
been best quality records but we have actually ended up with something
more subtle than that - but perhaps too subtle if no one realises it!
The default is determined by the way you choose to enter the site. If
you go in via the browse you get best quality records, if you go in
via a heavy duty search you get all records and if you go in via a
more lightweight search the you get only records with images. I
realise in making this decision we have made all sorts of assumptions
about our visitors but they do have the power to change the options for
themselves.

We have tried to think about the range of our visitors from very
serious academic researcher through to naive user and we also have in
mind visitors who have no specialist museum vocabulary and people who
want to use our collections for their own creative work where
serendipitous connections may be appropriate. So the browse may supply
some of these needs.

I am sure Richard Morgan, who is behind the technical development,
will answer the second half of your email.

Congratulations on a very impressive collection search! It's quite
snappy, too, considering the amount of data being indexed. I
especially like the feature that lets you expand a search result row
in-line to get a larger image and description of the record.

My only feedback is that depending on your primary audience for the
search engine, you might consider defaulting to only records with
 images or even
best quality records. A casual user of the site probably won't be
interested in records without images, and an expert user can be
 expected to change

 Hello all,

Our organization is just starting the discussion about developing a
technology plan. It is obvious from the first conversation that there
are varying visions for what this plan will include and how long it
will
take us to craft it. Would anyone be willing to share their wisdom
and
experiences in developing this document? Specifically I am interested
in knowing who was involved and how long did it take? What was the
scope of your plan? If anyone is willing to share a copy of their
plan
I would be thrilled. My email is listed below.

 Thank you in advance,
 Narda

It took us a couple of months to draft the first plan. Now we spend a
couple of weeks a year updating it. The technology plan built on an
existing Strategic Plan for the organization. There is a
reasonably-long (~15-20 pages) exposition of what we're trying to do,
then appendices mapping to our strategic plan, very simple budget,
etc. Note that we are a very small organization and that we didn't
have to cover standard IT stuff--just mission-related IT
(preservation, web, databases, etc.). The primary participants were me
(Dir. Online Strategy), and senior management, with me doing the
writing, others turning it into non-technical wording, and our COO
 helping with the budget.

The goal is specifically to figure what we want to be able to spend,
what our contingencies are (if too few funds), what we'll use to
measure whether we are reaching our goals, etc. We use this doc to
show to potential funders when we want them to understand where their
 money is needed.

For all that, I don't know that any funders have ever seen the whole
document. Usually I roll a 1-2 page summary for specific purposes.
In-house, however, this is the document that helps us hold the what
did we accomplish last year? Is that what we meant to accomplish? Is
it what we should have accomplished? How does this change where we
expect to see ourselves next year, two years from now, in 5 years?
conversations that are vital (and help us also hold conversations
like, what happens if this building burns down. how do we recover our
 digital assets.

 Hope this helps,

 ari
