[MCN-L] Shopify on museum websites

Hi all -

I'm hoping some of you have experience with Shopify.  We are looking to
move away from UberCart on our Drupal 6 website and set up Shopify
instead.  It will need to sell store products, event tickets (not many),
memberships, and take donation transactions.  Any thoughts, stories,
experiences, examples welcome.

So we also have dealt with this issue.  We do one of several things
depending on the work, and the people/personalities in play.

1) In gallery shots.  If a work is hanging on a wall and it is the wall
that is cropped to fit, not the work, this makes life a lot easier.  Same
for sculptures outside.

2) If we have to crop something we always include "detail" as part of the
credit line.

In this case the images have to be 580 x 380 and are scaled for the
exhibition listing. In one case I cropped and added detail to the title, in
the other I added extra white background to fit the dimensions. In both
cases the full works are represented at a higher resolution on the
exhibition page itself.  They are also both works in the collection, not on
loan.  With loans we always get the permission for the crop for print
materials and try to pick pieces/artists for the website that are visually
intersting but also the most felexible with usage.  We have the benefit of
having contemporary artists, the majority of whom understand the situation
and give permission.

Designers want precision of layout, while curators etc. want artistic
integrity honored.  We walk the tightrope in between.

[MCN-L] digital file archiving

Hello -

Does anyone out in the MCN community have a digital file archiving policy
and/or strategy they can share?  We have a ridiculous amount of data,
plenty from many years ago that does not need to be available on a daily
basis but should be kept for historical purposes. How have other
small/medium-sized museums handled this issue? I would appreciate any
thoughts or guidance on how best to manage years worth of exhibition
materials and photos.

[MCN-L] Adobe Creative Suite licensing

Hi all -

I'm looking for advice on how to implement Adobe Creative Suite now that it
has gone to a subscription model.  We have, in the past, purchased one copy
per fiscal year from Tech Soup. Tech Soup no longer offers CS, and when I
contacted Adobe about a non-profit rate, it sent me to a list of
resellers.  The resellers seem to want to sell their add-ons, training,
etc. All we need is a few licenses for Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, and
InDesign.  I'm curious how others, especially with limited budgets, have
handled this.

[MCN-L] What is it like to connect to museum Wi-Fi on a mobile phone?

We have no splash screen and two wi-fi networks, one is completely open and
free to the public.  The other is connected to our private network and
requires a password.  Both are available throughout the museum, though with
varying strengths.We don't use splash screens, but not by thoughtful
design.
