Hi all,

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) law changes coming into play
will impact museums and visitor privacy globally, enforceable from 25 May
2018 as discussed already in this forum.

To help clarify what GDPR means for museums both in the EU and also in
other countries, the MCN Data and Insights SIG will present a webinar on
GDPR led by Paulina Jedwabska, Head of Information Governance and
Departmental Records Officer at Department for Digital, Culture, Media and
Sport (DCMS), Thursday 15th March 2018 at 3PM Eastern time.

More details to come, stay tuned and look forward to seeing you there.

Best,
Angie

some have already pointed out, if you capture any EU citizen data, then it
falls under the umbrella of GDPR. We are also PCI compliant (I manage our
entire PCI footprint), so this is not uncharted territory for the museum and
staff.

Below is the email I sent to get everyone up to date and ready to discuss
the requirement and the deadline.

“The deadline for compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation
(GDPR) is quickly approaching (May 25th, 2018). Unlike PCI compliance, which is
a contractual agreement, GDPR is a comprehensive law that requires US
organizations to properly secure any and all information collected from
European Union (EU) citizens. Specifically, it dictates how organizations
handle personally identifiable information (PII). The purpose is to ensure that
they have greater control over their personal information – the right to
actively consent to every use of personal data, the right to limit that use,
the right to be forgotten, the right to have their data portable, and the right
to seek damages should they suffer from misuse and/or breach of their data. And
since it includes extraterritoriality, we are legally required to adhere to the
regulation.

We need to review our physical and digital systems to determine if we are
storing any data belonging to customers living in the European Union. If we
are, then we will need to meet GDPR, and be able to show compliance on demand,
either through an audit or a request from an EU citizen.”

Re: [MCN-L] GDPR Compliance

2018-02-08 Thread Sayre, Scott A
Hey Brian
Congrats on your PCI compliance. We also completed our PCI compliance in 2017
and are fully certified. I know what a tall order it is to achieve full
certification. There definitely are some parallels with GDPRThe real challenge
here seems to be giving the customer 100% control of her/his personal data and
knowing where you have it. Right now we have over a half dozen systems that
could contain personal information that may fall under GDPR regulations. While
we are working towards a single customer database, that’s a few years out. GDRP
is really going to push us to develop some bridging practices to be compliant
through this period - being able to send customers all the data we have on them
as well as allow them to request deletion of all their personal data in each of
these systems. That’s going to be a challenge. We’re just getting started so
please share what you have learned and the strategy you are taking.

Best,
Scott

[MCN-L] Preparing for quickly approaching GDPR deadline

2018-02-07 Thread Sayre , Scott A
Hi Folks-
We are in the early stages of preparing a strategy to comply with the May 28th
deadline for complying the EU’s General Data Protection Regulations
(https://www.eugdpr.org/ ). Hoping most of you are
familiar with these requirements and may have some thoughts on how you will be
responding to them. We are still working on defining requirements vs.
recommended practices and how and when we will be able to address them. It
appears this could affect our user data practices in e-commerce, blog,
e-commerce (ticketing and retail), as well as CRM.
I’d love to hear how others have begun to work on meeting these regulations and
if you have found any external expertise to guide you through the process.
Many thanks in advance.
-Scott

[MCN-L] Draft Museum Net Neutrality Advocacy Text

2017-07-13 Thread Sayre , Scott A
Hi –

Here is the text we have placed on our intranet site to inform our staff about
this legislation and encourage their advocacy.

Best,

Scott

--

Title/Subject: Have your voice heard on the future of Net Neutrality – July
17th deadline

The FCC is in the process of changing the rules regarding net neutrality in a
way that could have a negative impact on individuals and organizations that
develop, deliver and access web content, particularly rich media (video, audio
and large images, etc.). While the long-term implications of eliminating net
neutrality are unclear, this change will allow internet service providers “ISP”
like (Spectrum, ComCast, ATT, Verizon, etc.) to give bandwidth preferences
(speed of access) to content of their choice (programming from which they
generate revenue); currently all content is given equal bandwidth. For
organizations like museums, Implications could be limited bandwidth for
accessing our online resources or having to pay ISPs to maintain our current
level of delivery and access. Implications for consumers could be new
limitations placed on the speed and quality with which different sources of
content are delivered based on their ISP.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is taking public comments on this
change through July 17th. The Museum will be submitting comments to the FCC and
a letter to our representatives supporting the continuation of current Net
Neutrality law.

Individuals are encouraged to share their thoughts with the FCC

Via https://dearfcc.org/

You are also encouraged to voice your opinion with your local representatives
prior to the early August vote.

Senators https://www.senate.gov/general/contacting.htm

Representatives http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/

If you would like to learn more about this potential change there are many
articles available on the web.
