*Background*

In 2009, a group of librarians interested in quality research and
instructional image content formed the Image Resources Interest Group
<https://members.ivlaconference.org/ct.php?lid=110134873=50762336707> within
the Association of College & Research Libraries
<https://members.ivlaconference.org/ct.php?lid=110136095=50762336707> (ACRL)
to focus on the particular affordances and challenges of visual
information. That same year, the inaugural Visual Literacy Task Force
<https://members.ivlaconference.org/ct.php?lid=110137317=50762336707> was
formed to craft a set of standards that would complement the now rescinded

<https://members.ivlaconference.org/ct.php?lid=110139761=50762336707>
(Visual
Literacy Standards) highlighted ways in which visuals are distinct from
other information types.

In the years following the publication of the Visual Literacy Standards,
librarians began to engage with threshold concepts
<https://members.ivlaconference.org/ct.php?lid=110140983=50762336707>,
metacognition
<https://members.ivlaconference.org/ct.php?lid=110142205=50762336707>,
and metaliteracies
<https://members.ivlaconference.org/ct.php?lid=110143427=50762336707>,

for Information Literacy for Higher Education
<https://members.ivlaconference.org/ct.php?lid=110144649=50762336707>
(Framework),
which replaced the Information Literacy Standards. Ongoing critical
conversation continues to shape how learners are taught to create, use,
share, and assess information in the twenty-first century. Addressing these
shifts, ACRL assembled several task forces in 2018 to develop Framework
Companion Documents and update disciplinary literacy standards documents.
In this spirit, the current Visual Literacy Task Force was formed by the
Image Resources Interest Group to update the 2011 Visual Literacy Standards.

At the outset, we acknowledged that visual literacy and related terminology
remained difficult to define due to variations in use and meaning across
disciplines. We also recognized that mapping to the Framework would be a
challenging exercise. Success would require the participation of
thoughtfully engaged stakeholders. Therefore, we began by conducting an
IRB-approved qualitative research study[i]
<https://members.ivlaconference.org/ct.php?lid=110145871=50762336707>. From
fall 2019 to spring 2021, we interviewed a broad community of practitioners
and scholars, including architecture and planning librarians. Participants
were asked to define visual literacy, identify necessary skills and
competencies for their discipline, and discuss what they perceived as
challenges and opportunities.

By coding the interviews, we identified four themes that serve as the
backbone for the current Visual Literacy Framework Companion Document
draft. These themes are:

· Perceive visuals as communicating information;

· Participate in a changing information landscape;

· Practice visual discernment and criticality; and

· Pursue social justice through visu

[MCN-L] Summer Educational Institute 2017: Instructor of the week!

2017-04-05 Thread Stephanie Beene
It's officially Spring and that means it's time for us to highlight the
<http://seiworkshop.org/curriculum/>amazing instructors
<http://seiworkshop.org/curriculum/instructors-2/> for this year’s Summer
Educational Institute (SEI), and we’ll be highlighting one instructor from
the 2017 curriculum <https://seiworkshop.org/curriculum/schedule-2015/>
each week during the months of April and May - we hope you'll tune in and
better yet, come meet them and learn with us
<https://sites.google.com/site/register4sei/>!

We’re happy to introduce Nancy Sims, who will be kicking off SEI with Part
1 of our Intellectual Property Module. Nancy Sims is the University of
Minnesota Library’s subject specialist on copyright issues. She is both a
librarian and a lawyer, has extensive experience working in academic
libraries, and is fascinated by the pervasiveness of copyright issues in
modern life. Nancy advocates for policies and practices that support
sustainable scholarship, democratic information access, and public
participation in cultural heritage collections.

Nancy Sims

Did you know?

A veteran of SEI, she first presented at the 2015 SEI and loved it! She
blew away the audience with her copyright knowledge and presentation style,
and has been coming back ever since! We’re excited to welcome her back for
her third year in a row and think it’s pretty cool that SEI brings people
like this together, don’t you?

Nancy maintains a blog <http://simsjd.com/copyrightlibn/> and a twitter
<https://twitter.com/copyrightlibn?lang=en> account in which she weighs in
on things large and small related to copyright, intellectual property and
fair use. We hope to see you at SEI, though, where we’ll get to engage in
face to face discussion with the copyright maven herself!

In its 14th year as a joint program between the Art Libraries Society of
North America <https://www.arlisna.org/> (ARLIS/NA) and the Visual
Resources Association Foundation <http://www.vrafoundation.org/> (VRAF),
SEI 2107 will be held at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
<http://www.unc.edu/>, from June 6-9, 2017.

SEI provides new and more experienced professionals opportunities to stay
current in rapidly changing fields of digitization, project management,
fair use and copyright, metadata, and digital preservation, as well as
significant networking opportunities -- BUT -- it's filling up. *Register

We’re thrilled to introduce the <http://seiworkshop.org/curriculum/>amazing

The first of the series is Nancy Sims, who will be kicking off the SEI

She blew away the audience with her copyright knowledge and presentation

As a copyright maven with a law degree and a library degree, and calls
herself a lawyerbrarian. Nancy has a blog <http://simsjd.com/copyrightlibn/>

Hello MCN'ers,

Please excuse the cross-posting.

The accessCeramics team has put together an accessCeramics survey in order

this project, so I wanted to extend an invitation to each of you to fill it

[MCN-L] Update on Images for Academic Publishing...?

2011-04-25 Thread Stephanie Beene
**Please excuse cross-posting!**

Hello collective wisdom,

I wanted to update my records on which museums and institutions offer images
for academic publishing, so that if a faculty member wants information on
what is available out there for high-quality imagery for their upcoming
publication, I will have an updated list.

At VRA/ARLIS 2011, ARTstor presented on the expansion of their IAP program,
so I am already aware of what they are doing. My records are now outdated
and consist of the VA Museum and the British Museum. Does anyone know of
others? Also, I know that stipulations usually require a print run of 4,000
or less and may have other usage restrictions.

In addition to ARTstor, I am also aware of VADS, Bridgeman Art Library,
AKG-images, and of course, Art Resource. From the VRA Listserve, I was able
to add AICT and Yale University Art Gallery my no-cost list and the New York
Public Library, the Granger Collection, and Archivision as some for-a-fee
options.

Are there other similar services?

Thank you so much!
