2000-04-20 Thread metatron

Well Gaz,

One of the many nice things about Richer Sounds is that for a small deposit,
they will lend you a little suitcase full of interconnects so that you can
try them all out for yourself in the comfort of your own home and make your
own decision. I found that there was quite a noticeable difference between
cables, but that the more expensive ones didn't necessarily sound better
than some of the cheaper ones.

MD: analog to digital?

2000-04-20 Thread Matthew J. Updike

Here's a newbie question. Is there some way I can put my tapes onto
minidisc?? Here's the equipment I have: Aiwa CX-NA31 (this is a 3 cd shelf
system with dual cassette, also has an optical out so I can put my cd's onto
md but nothing else:( and a Sharp 702. Is there some sort of cable I can
run out of the headphone jack of the Aiwa that will convert the signal to
digital for my Sharp? Or how else might I do this?
thanks

Probably because this is the MiniDisc mailing list, not the Rio mailing
list. It's kinda like asking a lawyer if the fish is fresh.

MD: Need help from anyone with a Rio MP3 player!

2000-04-20 Thread Gadagada

Hello,
I've sent this letter out before, but have gotten no reply. So, I
figured I'd try again. I bought a Rio mp3 player (the first version) and
used it to format a smartmedia card that I already had, thinking that I could
reformat it for use in my digital camera if I wanted to use it for such
things. Anyway, I returned the Rio (I'll stick to MD) then discovered that
the only way that the card will be reformattable is if I format it once again
in a Rio player with the latest version of their software. So, I am stuck
with an expensive and useless smartmedia card and no way to fix it. I was
wondering if I could send my card to anybody out there who has a rio MP3
player, and they could reformat it and send it back to me. Thanks alot!

MD: MD remote in Freestylers video

2000-04-20 Thread Simon Gardner

Saw on MTV the other night a video by the Freestylers that showed the main
character controlling stuff around him with a MD remote (the stick type
that's used on the R55 among others).

It was done with track names like "REWIND" "PAUSE" etc. - the only problem
was that they were pointing the remote with the "stop" button end out,
showing that they didn't have any 'phones plugged in. Ironic, given that he
was wearing them throughout :-)

Can't remember the name of the track, and all the Freestylers fan sites seem
to have stopped updating in 1998.

Not a blatant MD plug, but pretty cool nonetheless..

MD: Traxdata MDs (UK)

2000-04-20 Thread Simon Gardner

I bought 20 of these a week ago from Richer Sounds (btw, the 69p each is
with the usual What Hifi? vouchers, max 20), and I'm pretty impressed with
them. No problems with the few I've recorded onto, and they're solidly built
with metal shutters.

I've scanned the front and back:

http://www.oak-lodge.demon.co.uk/minidisc/traxdata_front.jpg
http://www.oak-lodge.demon.co.uk/minidisc/traxdata_back.jpg

I fiddled with the shutter in Photoshop to make the logo clear - it's black
text on brushed silver, but scanned as black (it doesn't look that bad IRL
:) ).

Complaints are with the labels - they just don't fit as they should (the
spine one overhangs and the front one doesn't sit in the smooth recessed
space for it), and the cases - which are cassette-style and have a raised
circular bit so the disc will only fit in one way.

As I can cut a couple of mil off the labels and don't use the cases anyway,
I'm very happy with them. At 69p ea, it's not that big a problem :)

Hope this info is useful to the list.

Matt
Midiman in the UK make a number of cheap and effective bi-directional
Digital/Analog converters which convert a Digital Output to Analog or vice
versa. I have their CO2 model which is only $69. Try
soundprofessionals.com (who are very cheap), they have a number of Midiman
models ranging from the cheap to expensive.
