They work fine, and are a lovely blue colour, but still a hell of a price.
www.transco.co.uk have them for about $Can 2 each! Their shipping charge is
flat rate, so it's best to buy a big batch

Are the Hi-Space 80min discs any good, because I can get 4 for 24.99
Canadian at Virgin, which is better than 49.99 for 5 Sony Prism 80s.

RE:MD: MZR90 in Service Mode

2000-06-22 Thread Simon Longhurst

Craciunescu,

Go to site Minidisc.org they have some info on servive mode for MZR30/50.
From what I've read just removing the battery from the unit should return
the unit to normal operation. However the MDR-90 does have an internal
battery for the real time clock so it may not be that simple. A service
manual for your unit would explain how to get it out of service mode but I
haven't seen one on the web.

Good Luck
Simon.

MD: HiSpace discs and C13 error

2000-06-22 Thread Orange

I have not had the best experience with HiSpace discs so I choose not to
use them. The main problems I've found are that some discs recorded on
other players, are recognised (TOC etc.) by my old Sony MZ-R30 portable
but not always by my MDS-JB920. For some reason the deck gives a "C13"
disk error message when you try to insert it and it just ejects. I have
to put it in a couple of times before it finally reads the disc and lets
you play.

I am not sure why the portable has no trouble with it - only the deck
gives problems. Sometimes I can record on HiSpace discs with my
portable/deck but then later, the deck gives the same error. Its not
very reassuring.

Any comments?

MD: Hardware based encoders for ATRAC and MP3

2000-06-22 Thread David Smith

Aiwa has a portable solid-state MP3 recorder that will record in MP3
 format at 44.1khz stereo (see
 http://www.aiwa.co.jp/english/exhibi/new_p2000/mm-fx500.html). It

Interesting.

However, it doesn't offer scalable bitrates, and somehow copy protects all
mp3's created with it. What use then is the analog recording feature?
Recording through the mic is limited to 16kHz 16kbps which is okay for
personal lecture recording and the like, but not much else.

 "David Smith" [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Minidisc recorders efficiently compress high quality audio using a
hardware
ATRAC encoder, so they consume relatively little power.

Is there any similar chip based encoder for MP3? As far as I know, those
mp3
players that offer 'voice recording' don't encode their recordings in
mp3
format. MP3 compression offers one major advantage over ATRAC - scalable
bitrates and sampling rates, but it seems to be a fairly CPU intensive
  process.

Aiwa has a portable solid-state MP3 recorder that will record in MP3
 format at 44.1khz stereo (see
 http://www.aiwa.co.jp/english/exhibi/new_p2000/mm-fx500.html). It
offers 10 hour playback and 3.5 hour recording times. This seems
roughly on par with MD playback/recording ratios. My understanding is
that MP3 compression is on the same order of complexity as ATRAC.
