Re: MD: Upcoming portables
Woohoo, great info. Good job to the man who gathered the info. The MR200 could be inconvenient on several fronts: - HDES encoding only activates when used with AC adaptor (Matsushita's pamphlet/online PDF states this) - doesn't seem to allow manual recording level adjustment - volume and track select controlled by the pad - inconvenient if you decide to use the unit without the remote. Now we have the heavyweights to look forward to :) Good to hear Sharp may be sticking to Li-ion batteries. And if they're insisting on "Universe's bla bla bla" advertising...having the guts to say that two years in a row. ROFL. Wonder what they'll do with the ATRAC. MD: MDS-PC2 or PC3
Hi, I just read the epa site (http://www.epa.gov/appdstar/home_electronics/dvdlst.htm) that said the MDS-PC3 would be announced or tested more likely in Aug of 2000. I just bought a MDS-PC2 from Crutchfield last week. Anyone know any details? MD: MZ-R37 and MZ-R90 Problems
We've had many inquiries about the suitablility of the Sony MZ-R37 and MZ-R70 MD recorders for live concert recordings. The Sony recorders in general are less suitable that the Sharps for live concert recordings because you can't adjust the recording level while you are recording -- you must go into "Pause" first. The MZ-R37 and MZ-R70 in particular have another complication: they do not offer a "low sensitivity" setting for their mic pre-amp input. What this means is that as the music get loud and the output signal from your mics increase, the mic pre-amp can overload into heavy distortion. If you could switch the mic pre-amp to a lower sensitivity (or lower gain) setting (typically 20 dB lower), as you can with the other Sony MD recorders and all the Sharp MD recorders, you wouldn't have overload problems. Alternately, if the mics are self-powered, you could use an attenuator cable between the mics and the recorder to reduce the signal level -- but you can't do this with mics that are powered from the recorder. For these reasons we recommend that folks who are doing live concert recordings buy a recorder other than the -R37 and -R70. I hope this help! RE: MD: ATRAC3 -- Friend or Foe of MD?
Another question that exposes my ignorance yet again - last month someone explained to me that ATRAC 3, which is being used in the new LP MD players/recorders, is the logarithm used in the Sony memory stick. Cool. Now.. what were ATRAC 1 and 2 again? Which of these is used in the bulk of the (SP) MD audio units out there? I'm aware that the basic audio ATRAC logarithm we all have in our audio equipment from sharp 702s, 722s and 831s to sony MZR 37s, 55s, 70s and 90s to JE 330s and 520s has different versions, later models having improved versions, and each manufacturer has their own name for these different versions, with sony ATRAC 1, 2, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, and R (so far). But I'm not referring to these different versions of the standard (SP) ATRAC - am I right in thinking that ATRAC 3 is a different logarithm altogether (in due course having its own versions, but incompatible with the current LP ATRAC logarithm)? richard -Original Message- From: David W. RE: MD: ATRAC3 -- Friend or Foe of MD?
Nup. I hadn't. Answers my questions completely and then some! thanks Rick! A couple of observations though - first we're going to have to be careful discussing ATRAC versions once this takes hold since "ATRAC 3" could be interpreted as "ATRAC 3 (LP) version 1" or "ATRAC (1) (SP) version 3" (i.e. older players and recorders). And really I suppose there's "ATRAC 3 LP 2 version..." vs "ATRAC 3 LP *4* version ...". that'll double the average size of emails around here :-) Secondly and more importantly, sound quality is going to become more and more relative. It's already happening with CD vs. MP3 (different bitrates) vs. MD (different versions, although modest distinctions between most versions) I guess. But it seems to me currently the standard for sound quality is still the CD. With ATRAC 3 LP 2 being described as "MD like" the relevance of the CD standard is slipping. I suppose most people couldn't tell the difference and most of those that do don't care if it's more convenient anyway... One thing's for sure - I was on the verge of saving up for a new MD recording portable (currently only have a playback portable), either R90 or sharp 831 - no way I'm buying them when I can wait 6-9 months and get a portable with LP mode. That said, I just fitted an expensive Sony MD headunit to my car which will be incompatible with LP discs. Ouch! I guess we're all feeling this. richard -Original Message- From: Eric Woudenberg [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Have you seen the MDLP mode FAQ? http://www.minidisc.org/mdlpfaq.html Rick - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I got a MS722 for $133 from www.mercata.com (after a 20% discount for signing up). It wouldn't record and generated UTOC errors right out of the box. That said, I just fitted an expensive Sony MD headunit to my car which will be incompatible with LP discs. Ouch! I guess we're all feeling this. richard Personally, I don't feel the need for LP - maybe I'll end up with a home deck that will do LP (which would be handy for recording longer radio broadcasts), but for general recording of compilations, CDs, etc. then 74/80 minutes is fine. When I first read about it, I thought that a bit more recording time was a neat idea. When I realised it wasn't backward-compatible with the (millions?) of older units, I changed my mind. LP mode is just what MD can do without - incompatible formats and extra hassle, especially as there won't be any visible way to tell the two apart. It'll just create headaches for existing users buying into LP, and confusion amongst those buying their first MD unit. And all this for a bit more (IMHO unnecessary) recording time. I'd leave it on the decks and if it must be put on recording portables, bury it deep in the menu system. Trying to make such drastic changes to a format so far into it's life would be commercial suicide. -- Simon - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: MD: ATRAC3 -- Friend or Foe of MD?
I just purchased a R90 for almost $300. That kind of makes me mad, considering it will be old technology in a few months. That said, I don't think all these different bit rates of playback will be useful. I wouldn't want to lower sound quality, especially if I had a choice not to. I would always want to make the highest quality recordings, and can't think of a situation in which I would want to decreased quality, especially when dubbing CD's. I think I'll stick to my MDS-JE630 with Type-R and my R90. ] It seems that sound quality is getting worse as technology continues (Mp3, and now LP modes), and that's definitely a step back. Not a good thing. So, I guess I shouldn't be mad that my equipment will be outdated soon. I'm fine with what I have, and that's all that matters :).
