MD: End of the quirky Aiwa's?

2001-03-23 Thread Eric Woudenberg, Minidisc.org Editor

Norbert (indirectly) forwarded this link for Aiwa's English AM-F90
page to me: URL:http://www.aiwa.co.jp/english/exhibi/new_p2001/am-f90e.htm

Actually I'm a bit sad to see it, Aiwa's were always somewhat unusual
in their feature set (e.g. AGC *AND* on the fly recording level
control, program play mode, backlit main body display, etc.) and I
thought of them as the real "hacker" (or "MD nerd") machines. So, does
this spell the end of Aiwa-unique units?

Judging by the initial monthly production numbers (Aiwa AM-F90: 3000
units, Sony MZ-R900: 50,000 units) they must not have very high
expectations for it -- or maybe Aiwa's will now be unique by being rare!

MD: MZ-R50 Test mode

2001-03-23 Thread Richard Braley

Hello MD enthusiasts, I was wondering if anyone has documented the default
bios settings for the MZ-R50 or if someone could take the time to check them
for me...My little cousin was playing with my minidisc player and I think I
had left it in test mode the night before (I have to put it in test mode to
fix a LCD problem, my screen is blank after 3 days unless I go into test
mode and turn it off again) anyhow, I turned it on and the laser was
clicking beyond the minidiscs specsI took it to sony and they told me
it was gonna cost me 80$ for them to retune the bios using the controls...so
if anyone out there can save me 80$, i'd appreciate it greatfully!

much thanks in advance
Respectfully,
Richard Braley

Oh, I was most definitely joking. While I've read reports from several
satisfied customers, I firmly believe you'd be nuts to let someone else
invest a big chunk of your money for two months for a free minidisc
player...

MD: MD to PC?

2001-03-23 Thread j. glenn

Hello all,

I am new to MD and am currently looking for a portable MD recorder for use
in field recording. I am thinking about getting a MZ-R900. Problem is, I
would like to be able to transfer my recordings to my PC for further
mixing; yet there doesn't seem to be any way of doing this with the
available transfer devices (Catch Sound et al.) Does anybody know of a way
to transfer data digitally from MD to PC?

Thanks for your help,

Jake

Wasn't it on minidisc.org newspage about how someone found a way to use the
DG1 with sharp units?

I am looking at getting one of those...I already have the AN1 and quite
happy with itthe main reason I bought AN1 was because I can use it as a
second soundcard...so I can setup winamp to use the AN1 and the system for
the regular soundcard that way I wont hear those ICQ "Uh-ohs" on the MD
recordings

That was one of the big plus and the other was because well it's external so
all the noise generated from the PC dont affect it much...

I really wanted to get the DG1 at first but since they wouldnt work with
Sharps (in my case the 722)...but now they are able to work with some trick
I am thinking of getting one...though I have not heard from anyone who said
it worksbut I want to try it out myself anyways

Anyone know where to get one for cheap? I want the Sony version (I guess the
OEM one) since its cheaper because musicmatch isnt included...which I dont
need anyway...

Late last year I bought a Sony R37SP on sale for a good price, and it

I was at Target the other day and saw that exact same MD recorder on
sale for a much higher price, with one exception. The sign said that
it came with a USB cable that allowed you to digitally record MP3
files to MD. My question is what in the world are they referring to,
and where can I just get the cable sinc eI already have that
 recorder?

Even so I wish I know how to get that exact unit they sell with that

would *have* to have better sound quality than my terrible soundcard

OK, so where do you actually buy it? I can't find it on the Sony, or
Sony
  Style web sites anywhere.

Right, both the analog and digital USB to MD link that Sony sells with
their machines is made by Xitel (see www.xitel.com). The analog one is
called the MD-Port AN1, and the digital one is the MD-Port DG1. Both
are available from Minidisco (even if you go to Xitel's site and try
to buy it, Minidisco handles the sales for them). However, the DG1 has
compatibility problems; as far as I can tell Xitel goofed on the
design of the DG1 and so it *only* really works with the MZ-R90 and
 later Sony machines.

I notice that Japan-Direct is selling the "CatchSound PC Link" (see
 URL:http://www.japan-direct.com/shopping.asp?prodid=256) a USB to
digital audio out device. I've asked Randy (owner of Japan-Direct) but
no word yet on whether it works better than the Xitel device (but it
would be hard for it to do worse!). It's the same price as the Xitel
part (modulo shipping fees from Japan).

By the way, I've used the Xitel MD-Port AN1 (analog version) and it
works quite well. It's really quiet and I wouldn't have any qualms
whatsoever about using it for high quality MP3-MD recordings.

If the only thing you'd need the new soundcard w/ optical out for is the
optical out then I'd recommend the Xitel DG-1 (the digital usb transfer
thingy). I have one, it's pretty nice, really eazy to set up and all
that jazz and quite simple to use. I don't use it all that much (I have
cd players w/ digital out and a cd-r, and on my current 26.4kbps
connection I don't download tons of mp3s) but for what it's used for it
works very well, and surely not "shady" in the least bit. Most sound
cards w/ digital out (as far as I've heard) will not automatically
record track marks unless you set it up for the 2 or 3 seconds of
silence between tracks, so beware buying a cheap soundcard just because
 it has digital out.

I noticed on Minidisco's site that they say the DG-1 is *not*
compatible with MD Decks. Any idea what's going on?

Hi. I have an Aiwa FM70. The backlit controls are neat, but I don't find it an
intuitive unit. I like things where you don't have to keep reading the
instruction manual to find out what they can do. Every once and a while I can
actually make the unit go into the mono mode, just by pure luck.

This is a totally subjective opinion, but I just don't think that the sound
quality is as good as my older Denon R70 or what ever it is called (Sharp MS200
clone). The Aiwa came with very poor earbuds too. Of course the Denon's
original remote arrived from Japan DOA (I substituted one of their diamond
shaped LCD remotes-one of the few remotes that actually has a metal case).

In a way it is strange that Aiwa should be one of the first to be dropping out
of the MD arena. For years their mini systems (even most of the modestly priced
ones) featured an input for MD and a TOSlink out.

Re: MD: Sony R900 vs. R90

2001-03-23 Thread NChrist

I want to get rid of my R90 because of two reasons:

 1) no good for live recording (very hard to adjust levels in the dark)
 2) Doesn't go even close to loud enough. I set the rec levels as high as
they will go, and its still too quiet. I use sony 888 earbuds.

 Anyone have any recommends? Thanks,

YES GIVE IT TO ME HARHARHAHR!!! I MAKE THE JOKE BECAUSE I LOVE.

Re: MD: End of the quirky Aiwa's?

2001-03-23 Thread Leon

I read online somewhere about Aiwa losing money, so I checked their
financial reports here:

http://www.aiwa.co.jp/english/index_e.html

In a nutshell, Aiwa's first loss in 13 years was experienced in fiscal 1999,
and they continued to lose money in the first half of fiscal 2000. Aiwa
estimated that it will lose money all the way through fiscal 2000 (ends at
the end of March).

Shortage of component supply, especially the chips that are key to
downsizing equipments, was cited as one of the reasons for the loss.
Assuming that this holds enough significance, going for cloning probably
relieves them of the pressure of procurement.

The F80, for instance, uses Sony ATRAC and Philips A/D D/A converter, seen
in the pictures at the bottom of this page.

MD: audiobooks and the like

2001-03-23 Thread Carlos Macedo Gomes

Hello,

I was trying to search the list archive but it appears to be offline. Long time
lurker first time poster.

Anyone have any opinions on the Voquette service http://www.voquette.com/.
Their PC audio to minidisc tool/gizmo used to be on minidisco.com a few weeks
ago but now it's gone.

I'm interested in putting audiobook on my minidisc to listen as I move around
NYC. It would also be cool to be able to setup my PC to download online audio
newsservices or just interesting web casts. If I remember correctly the gizmo
and software combo allowed this. I heard it worked primarily w/ Sharp players
which is cool since that's what I have.

Anyone?

thanks,
C.G.
