MD: gear :)

2001-10-14 Thread S da Moo

Hei all,

I am looking for help to decide which minidisk and accessories gear I should get. I
hope someone here can offer some suggestions.

I am working at a small local community radio station in Finland. Some reporting and
interviews. Some editing. Some on air time. Because of a conflict with my student
grant I was not able to collect my first month's pay in cash. The station boss said
that I can take it in gear bought for me by the station. So I can order 1000 dollars
worth of anything I want. :)

I am very into sound and I want to get the best pro quality minidisk gear for both
location work and home editing that I can get for this 1000 bucks. I can use the
station's gear for work but I would like to have my own system at home for my own
work. I am thinking that I need:

- 1 small minidisk recorder for location work.
(headphones hole. line in/line out. manual recording level. editing features.
visual record level. 2 mic in holes? md to pc port?)

- 1 good hand/stand held mic for location or studio work. (2 mics for stereo
recording?)
(I already have 2 very good sony condensor lavier mics but the clips for clothing
fall off the mics so I think I want a good hand held mic for now. I can figure out
how to make the small ones work later.)

- 1 small hidden headphones for location interviews.
(Some recent posts here mentioned a couple that sound very good. Both sound
quality and comfort are important here.)

- 1 minidisk editor/mixer for home editing.
(If a home studio editor/mixer is too expensive maybe I can transfer the files to
my computer and edit in a program like the one I use at the station?)

- 1 larger pro headphones for home studio work.
(I think that AKG's K240 headphones seem very good. They have them at the station.
I use and like them:
http://www.akg-acoustics.com/english/headphones/proheadph.htm#K240
but if anyone has any other type to suggest or comments about these headphones,
let's hear it.)

If i can get what I need for less than 1000 bucks, I would also like to get a scanner
and a drawing stylus to use for hand drawing into graphic art programs but the digital
recording gear takes priority here. So those for starters. Any Ideas for a 1000 bucks
shopping list? :) I am hoping that people here at this group can give me some good
tips.

thanks,

-Sari :)

MD: . is this a good mic

2001-10-14 Thread Payvand-G

Hello-

I've been looking at a mic that can plug into a portable MD recorder. This
is what I've found so far. Does anyone have this? Are you happy with it?

2001-10-14 Thread Sandra5oh

Payvand,

I too looked at this microphone (along with many others). The frequency
response (100-15000Hz) of this model is the reason I decided to look for
another mic. A response beginning at 100Hz is not what I would use if I ever
intended to record live music. If you think of it in terms of frequencies
corresponding to the tones of the equal tempered scale, this mic (according
to the specs) would transduce the frequency of 103.831Hz (G# 2), but not G2
with a frequency of 98Hz. By the way, pianos produce frequencies as low as
27.5Hz (A0).

Since I can't predict exactly what will and will not be recorded (data
retained) once the data compression begins, I made the decision to search for
a mic (moderately priced) that would provide as much information (lower
frequencies) as possible.

I've been looking at a mic that can plug into a portable MD recorder. This
is what I've found so far. Does anyone have this? Are you happy with it?

MD: Nude Ex

2001-10-14 Thread Jinx

Anyone know where I can get a pair of those great Nude Ex earbuds with a
NORMAL SIZED LONG CORD instead of the annoying short cord that minidisc
users love so dearly. I hate only being able to use a pair of headphones
with my MD player and not my CD player as well. Thanks

This one works well but you have to make it. The cost is about $10

When a mic says it has a frequency response of 100 - 15000Hz, it means
that the response is approximatly flat accross that region, It will
still record frequencies above and below the stated range. It is just
that the response is lower at those frequencies.

Ohhh, thanks.

Don't all the short-cord versions also include a one-meter extension? I
got a pair of short-cord MDR-63s, and it included the extension. I
thought it was standard Sony practice.

Where did you buy the Sennheisers? Significantlt better is enough for me to
try them. By the way, did you mean punchy bass with crispy highs? I know, I
ask for it all.

For the money ($20), the best earbuds I've heard (by a long shot) are the
Sennheiser MX-500 which can be found for $15 - $20. I find them to be
significantly better than the Sony 228s.
