Re: MD: Q about MDLP - ATRAC3

2001-10-25 Thread Eric Woudenberg, Minidisc.org Editor

wolfgang buresch [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I just read on the MDCP the faq about ATRAC3 at
http://www.minidisc.org/mdlpfaq.html and it says for Q#10: What
bitrates are used? A:.In LP2 and LP4 modes 20 bytes of dummy
data per 212 byte soundgroup.. -- those 20 bytes -- are they a
fact or just a wild guess?

Fact. I double checked it with Sony.

Sorry, my fault, but I guess I was misunderstood. I understand that ATRAC3 has to be
somehow embedded into ATRAC1 and I know that that's a fact. What I meant was whether
the
number of bytes (20) are a fact or not (Why not 19 or 21 bytes per SG). For, you only
need 13 bytes per soundgroup to produce silence. I even could ask differently. If we
were ask to define the new ATRAC3 algorithm and we know we have to embed it into
ATRAC1, why come up with 132kbps? Why waste 7 bytes per SG for nothing? Think about
it,
we have 775.104 SoundGroups available for recording, that means we are wasting more
than
5MB per 74m59s disc and there is no future use for that space.

Right. I received the 20 bytes number from Sony after publishing
an initially incorrect guess at the number of bytes needed to produce
silence in ATRAC1.

My guess is that 132kbps is really just the average, and that the
extra unusused space is actually slop space for the Huffman
encoder. Since Huffman coding exploits redundancy in the information
to be encoded, some signals will require more space than others (just
as with .zip files).

ps: last Q: Does anyone know why the very first ATRAC coder [ATRAC1 Version1 (MZ-1)]
sounded soo bad. (I know the answer, but before I am going to post it I want to have
 your thoughts).

The 16 bit math?

Re: MD: off topic- sound card to amp problems

2001-10-25 Thread Dick Rawson

Hi Mike,

i ran a ground cable fromn the chassis of the reciever
to the chassis of my pc. touching the ground cable to
the PC chassis also causes a spark.

There's at least some unwanted voltage between PC and ground.
You might have a dangerous risk of shock now.
And if not now, one might well develop if the failure
gets worse. I recommend fixing it soon.

Since the problem appeared abruptly, I'd think that a
component failed. Since you get that spark between
ground and the PC, I think that the failure is in the
PC's power supply.

That's moderately good news in one sense. Replacement
power supplies are a commodity. There are many sources
for them. There might be some trouble deciding which
of a few kinds you need (different shapes and connectors).
You also need the replacement supply to have the same
watt rating the one you now have, or the new one can be
higher, but that rating is pretty easy to find on the labels.

Replacement generally involves disconnecting plug-together
cables, removing screws, removing the old unit, and vice
versa. You might do it, or a shop shouldn't charge you
for a lot of time to do it.

So repairing the PC could well cost less than repairing
the receiver.

Dick

RE: MD: MD Label blank

Yes. They seem to be sticky enough to not come off in normal use, but they
can be peeled off easily enough.

do these labels remove easily from md's? i'm curious because i hate having
stacked 3+ labels on top of each other because they all stick together.

Pressit make label software and labels for MD. I got mine from discount
 discs (www.discountdiscs.co.uk), or try www.pressit.com

They seem to work well enough with my Epson inkjet printer.

Re: MD: off topic- sound card to amp problems

2001-10-25 Thread J. Coon

You have a

GO to Home Depot or a good hardware store and get a plug in tester that
shows if a receptical in wired correctly. They have three prongs like a
plug and there are three neon lights. They cost about $15 or less. All
the do is show if the recptical is connected properly and has power.
Some will also test to see if a GFI works propely too.

Plug that into the two recepticals and you will find that one of them is
wired incorrectly. Before you make any changes in the wireing to
correct it, makes sure the power is off for the receptical you are
working on.

There are three wires connect to a three prong receptical.

Black is or should be the HOT wire, and it connects to the small flat
prong.

White is neutral and it connects to the large flat prong

Green or bare is Ground and it connects to the metal electrical box and
the round grounding prong.

It is possible that one of your extension cords is plugged in backwards
also.

Hopefully neither the reciever nor the computer has been damaged.
Usually it is just leakage current, but enough to activate the
protection circuitry involved.

 hi,
i ve got a wierd problem connecting the line out jack from my PC
soundcard to an input on my stereo reciever. it used to work fine, but
suddenly, the amp was shutting itself down, some kind of failsafe. it only
happened when the AUX is used, which is where the rca cables( 1/8 in.
minijack cable to rca's) from the card are plugged into.you can actually see
a spark jump from the jack to the soundcard input when you connect them. i
plugged in a protable cd walkman to the cables, and all worked fine, so i
dont think there are shorts in the rca cables. i believe its got to do with
 proper grounding of the units.
the reciever has a two prong, polarized plug. i ran a ground cable
fromn the chassis of the reciever to the chassis of my pc. touching the
ground cable to the PC chassis also causes a spark. with the two units
grounded together, the amp works, but the monitor display behaves funny, it
gets jiggly. i disconnected the ground and havent used the sound cars since.
i'm thinking of grounding both the pc and amp chassis to a cold water
pipe, which i guess would be the ultimate of grounds. if anyone has any
ideas about this , please let me know before i blow up the pc, the map, or
 both.

 thanks much

MD: NetMD release date revisited + speaker setup question

2001-10-25 Thread Gerard Naude

Hi all.

I know that the Sony release date for the NZ-1 will be around the 10th of
December. Does anyone know when the Sharp units will be available? More
specifically I will be in London in December and wanted to know if it will
be possible to buy the Sony or Sharp units before Christmas (as a present).

My second question. I have a set of Cambridge pcworks speakers lying around.
I would like to hook this up to my mini sound system at home. My problem is
that the Hi-Fi only gives out normal speaker output, and not low volume
output that the built in amp of the Cambridge set needs. Any ideas of how
this will be done?

TIA

Gerard.
