MD: OT: Vinyl to MP3

2000-08-26 Thread Brett Tyre

This is slightly offtopic, but short of wading through USEnet, this is the
best place for this question.

Can anyone suggest an excellent program for encoding vinyl to high quality
MP3 w/o the use of a preamp or receiver/amp?

Thanks,

Re: MD: Is 128kbps MP3 bad? MD has loadsa life yet!

2000-07-17 Thread Brett Tyre

Oh, I did realize that there would be some distortion, but I find it varies
from song to song. Some songs while be perfect, others will be terrible.
The reason I putting my mp3s to to MD is because I *don't* have a CD burner,
otherwise I would just put everything to CD and only MD the stuff I like
when I get an MD changer for my car.

Brett, you can't rely on anything in between the mp3 and the mini disc.
Even
the best sound card with a digital output might still create some
distortion.

Right now the best way I see to make good copies of Mds from mp3 files is
to
convert them to wave files and transfer them to CD then to MD. Or to have
a
player like the Apex DVD player that will read mp3 files and has a digital
output (unfortunately not optical on that model-that's why I ordered a
coaxial
to digital converter from Nate White, hint, hint-Nate, I still didn't
receive it
 yet).

Re: MD: Is 128kbps MP3 bad? MD has loadsa life yet!

2000-07-16 Thread Brett Tyre

I've found that mp3s of songs with vocals sometimes do not transfer over to
MiniDisc well (analog), especially 128k files. Although it is partially
dependant on the EQ settings on my home stereo, even if I drop the bass down
and boost other parts up, with some songs the vocals are kind of muddled and
hard to hear amongst the music. On other songs at 128, some of the higher
stuff is muffled, or "combed" or really sharp. Fortunately, I record a lot
of instrumentals which seem to pick up better than vocals.

No complaints on a digital CD copy yet.

Thing is I have been using Napster lately, to download mp3 music most
of which has been at 128kbps, and to be honest it is to my ears quite
acceptable, provided it was recorded properly. Having just downloaded
and listened to Kate Bush Wutheing Heights, there were definite probs
with the high freq stuff, sorta muffled artifacts added to them but
overall, in any listening environment other than my home I doubt they
 would be detectable.

Re: MD: Forgot just how bad vinyl sounded

2000-07-06 Thread Brett Tyre

Odd that you should mention this. With some of the music I listen to, it is
cheaper and easier to buy vinyl part of the time. While all of the vinyl
I've purchased has been 'used', the extent of its use has been limited to a
few sample plays in the store.

When I get home, I plug in my turntable and my minidisc deck and start
recording. By going through a pre-amp, I actually get very good sound out
of the vinyl. In fact, the only time I notice the usual pops and crackles
is at the beginning, or between songs - it sounds almost like a CD.

We have been selling off much of what we own because we are moving and
don't want to take it (I have a Sony 510 deck for sale on e bay).

I have been attempting to sell my old albums. Before I will list one for
sale I play test it. I can't believe what we used to put up with. At
first, ignoring the ticks and pops, I though, "what a warm sound". But
the
more I listened I realized, "man this sounds bad".

You see people selling lps in sealed mint condition. I wonder if they
didn't reseal them. How could anybody know 35 years ago that some day
music would be read by lasers?? Back then lasers had just come out. They
were very powerful and used to cut things.

MD: Minidisc Canada?

2000-05-26 Thread Brett Tyre

A while back, someone had posted a URL for a Canadian based on-line MiniDisc
shop. Due to the frail and old state of my mind, I have failed to bookmark,
write down or remember this URL. Would someone be kind enough to post it
for idiots like me?

Thanks.

Did you find that price off of carmedia ?

I couldn't find anything cheaper than carmedia myself, but I've heard of
people complain about their customer service.

wrt to your question, i believe sony's changer use sony's own proprietary
connector so if your chrysler headunit wasn't made by sony, then you'd
probably have to get adapters, if they exist.

My mom is going to put a CD changer in her convertable, I convinced her
to go with a MD changer. I found a MDX-65 changer on sale on the net for
$319.99. Anybody know how good this changer is and will it work with a
stock Chrystler head unit that has changer controls for a 6 cd changer
out of box, or will I have to get all sorts of adapters. Someone let me
know something so I'm better prepared to install the thing if we order
it
off the net. I know Crutchfield knows all that shit, but, they're too
  expensive.

MD: Opinion: Best Brand of MiniDisc

2000-05-07 Thread Brett Tyre

I'm curious as to everyone's opinion on what the best brand of MiniDisc
happens to be. I've been pleased with the results of the Sony 74s and 80s,
both in my Sony deck and my Aiwa portable; TDKs also seem very good.

I've tried a few Maxells (Gold), but of all my MiniDiscs, the two Maxells
have been ejected from my deck with the shutter half-open much more
frequently than the Sonys or TDKs. AFAIK, this has only happened once with
my Sony discs and never with my TDKs. Has anyone else experienced this
problem with the Maxell Golds? The sound quality is good, but this problem
deters me from saving a few cents and buy more Maxells.

Any other brands I should try?

Re: MD: Well I did it.

2000-04-22 Thread Brett Tyre

I've had this problem too, and while having the songs blended together is
nice for something like a DJ mix, its a minus not having track markers. I
usually create my playlists in Real Jukebox, and between each track (unless
it has a proper fade), I place recorded silence. I took one of my albums
with secret tracks and I recorded 2 seconds of silence as an MP3. This adds
two seconds on to the end of whatever song I'm recording, causing my deck to
read it as time for a new track. (I have the MDS-S707, which uses two or
three seconds bursts of silence as track spacers).

The biggie. The Sony doesn't detect intersong spaces and lay down a
mark in any mode. I have the WinAmp inter-song silence plugin and
it's working. Using the optical interface, I've tried both manually
recording and using sync record. Nadda. Records OK, just no track
 marks. What's the trick.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't an MD encoded optically? Maybe I'm just
mistaken, but there better be a damn good reason for having a Class 1 Laser

No, it is impossible to _erase_ an MD with a magnetic field. But a
sufficiently powerful EM field could warp or crack the metallic layer,
 rendering the disc unusable.

MD: MiniDisc Labels

2000-04-14 Thread Brett Tyre

Is there a print program in existence that can print out customized labels
for MiniDiscs? I'm looking for something that will allow me to put graphics
onto a label so that I don't have to use the boring labels provided with all
blank MiniDiscs.

Thanks,
Brett.
