MD: Target

2000-08-06 Thread Jeff J. Voeller

Speaking of drug testers, I just noticed that Target has two
different PC-Link-equipped portables for sale. They've been selling
blank discs for several years and in fact just added Maxell and
Memorex after previously only stocking Sony.

From all of the e mails I have read here, it seems that even Best
Buy has thrown in the towel on MD.

They still stock plenty of it in Sacramento, where the Good Guys also
reports selling a lot of it.

One thing I learned a long time ago: If you're looking for sales
people with even a moderate facsimilie of a clue, never shop at
Best Buy or CompUSA. Even half the Circuit City folks I talk to
 have no clue.

These are all stores that inspect potential employees' urine. I've
learned that while businesses that do not drug test _may_ get stupid,
obnoxious employees, businesses that do drug test _always_ get
stupid, obnoxious employees. It seems to have something to do with
the mindset (or lack thereof) that allows one to submit to such
degradation.

It seems to be getting worse the longer the U.S. economy does well
and more and more people are refusing to submit to testing for
employment. The truly talented are working in better jobs, everyone
else is working for Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.

Re: MD: Why does Sony not have earbuds on US models?

Sorry, but that's just not true. I don't know if american headphones

at how loud people can turn their earbuds and NOT have their eyes come
out bleeding. I tried and turned my own volume up until it started to
hurt, but when I took my earbuds out I could hear nothing.
So what does this tell us ? Buy stock in hearing-aid companies.

That's terrifying! I prefer earbuds simply because it's physically
impossible for me to annoy others with them. I can't imagine the
pressure those people are putting on their eardrums!

I think the real reason is so the cops can tell if you are driving and

As someone who would prefer to ride public transit but can't deal

morning for an entire busload of strangers.

Re: MD: Digital CD-MD-Amp passthrough

2000-06-28 Thread Jeff J. Voeller

I think you could do a simple test to determine if your MD unit is
passing an unaltered digital signal or not, assuming you have DTS
capability.

Put a DTS CD in your CD player, pass the signal through your MD
recorder, then attempt to decode the DTS signal after it's been
through the MD unit. If it works, you're getting a pure signal. If
it doesn't, you're not.

(Haven't tried this yet myself.)

Add my JA30ES to being a playback-only unit with mono discs.

As far as I know, the only unit that cannot play mono discs is the
original home unit, the MDS-101. To my surprise, even the original
two-ton Walkman recorder MZ-1 will happily play mono, even though
it's either the same generation or older than the MDS-101.

Re: MD: Cheap solution for cd player deck or portable

1999-12-19 Thread Jeff J. Voeller

I'm looking for a cheap solution for a cd player deck or portable that
_WILL_ play cd-rw and cd-r that has a optical output as well. I want to buy
one at a local consumer store (best buy, circut city, good guys, etc).

Several months back I got a Sony CDP-CD335 at Circuit City for, if
I remember correctly, $140. It's a five-disc carousel that does
exactly what you ask. No regrets.
