A lot of people do.  Unfortunately, John needs to listen to the programs away
from home; he can't carry around a VCP with him for playback the way he can
take along a portable MD unit, and he won't have time to dub them from video-
cassette to MD before needing to hear them, so that method won't work for him.

MD: Timer Recording

I personally wouldn't bother using timers with my MD portable. Instead,
I prefer to record audio programs using my Hi-Fi VCR...a breeze for
multi-event recording. The sound quality is quite good, and the VCR
compression is a benefit, helping to prevent midrange loss during CD
dubbs. Besides, I can remaster the tape by running the signal through my
Rane graphic EQ, and/or BBE Sonic Maximizer onto MD or CD to enhance the
recording.
