OR, you could buy a Sony changer compatible head unit made by another

Does anyone know which Prestige head units can control CD stackers using the
UniLink setup? This is because I know of someone who has recently installed
a Prestige P74 head unit and is starting to show interest in MiniDiscs and
there is also a Sony UniLink CD stacker that may be sold up because it is
without a head unit thanks to water damage caused by a car painter failing
to replace the windshield wiper seals.

Sure, it can be done if you're a good hardware guru and experienced with
microcontrollers. Plus you'd have to reverse engineer two changer
datastreams and do bidirectional conversion. No small trick.

Did you find that price off of carmedia ?

I couldn't find anything cheaper than carmedia myself, but I've heard of
people complain about their customer service.

wrt to your question, i believe sony's changer use sony's own proprietary
connector so if your chrysler headunit wasn't made by sony, then you'd
probably have to get adapters, if they exist.

My mom is going to put a CD changer in her convertable, I convinced her
to go with a MD changer. I found a MDX-65 changer on sale on the net for
$319.99. Anybody know how good this changer is and will it work with a
stock Chrystler head unit that has changer controls for a 6 cd changer
out of box, or will I have to get all sorts of adapters. Someone let me
know something so I'm better prepared to install the thing if we order it
off the net. I know Crutchfield knows all that shit, but, they're too
 expensive.

This is kind of a side note, but is Sony the only company that makes MD
changers for cars?

No, most of the other major manufacturers also make MD changers, but they
are really expensive and really rare. So effectively, yes, Sony is the only
company that makes MD changers... which limits my head unit choices to Sony,
which is unfortunate.

Does anyone know if:

1) Sony changers (MD/CD) uni-link can be adapter-converted to work with
other manufacturer HU for cheap ?

2) Anyone makes a CD changer that buffers the signal so disc changes take
very little time as opposed to the 4-5second disc swaps common in CD
changers nowadays ?

Re: MD: MDX-65 Changer

2000-05-14 Thread JR Moore

If that Chrysler head unit can't control an MDX-65, you will need
 the RF
kit and remote controller. The remote controller mounts up front
 and
has its own display to control the changer. The RF modulator hooks
 into
the antenna, and you listen to the changer by dialing in a specific
 frequency on the radio.

Yeah, but, I'm not wanting to go the RF route. Few problems:

direct antenna connection causes loss from antenna because of modulator
Most of the time, they're set fequencies and you can get bleed through,
although the modulator does cut it off, I've seen it happen
FM audio is kinda bad

Is it possible to use just the remote and use the RCA audio wires, nah,
doubt it.

Yes, if there is such a thing as a CD changer emulator that works with
that Chrysler head unit. What I mean, is something you plug in there
that lets there stereo think there's a changer hooked up. That way, it
will activate the RCA inputs. That is, if the audio inputs are on
separate RCA's. I've seen some changer setups where the audio is
carried along in the changer bus cable along with the data.
