As far as I know, the only unit that cannot play mono discs is the
original home unit, the MDS-101. To my surprise, even the original
two-ton Walkman recorder MZ-1 will happily play mono, even though
it's either the same generation or older than the MDS-101.

I made mono recordings on a Sharp 702 and was able top play them on Sony
equipment.I think that some of the older players and recorders
didn't support mono at allThat is where the porblem was. AFAIK,
all the newer units support it.

I read an article in Radio World which was a review of the Sharp MD-MS
 722. In it the reviewer commented that the mono recording mode among

 and experience with this?

Only in respect that not all MD units can *record* in mono. I think there
was an early car unit that objected to mono MDs but that was a hardware bug
and was fixed I could be wrong on that though as this was before car
units were available in the UK.

I have just purchase a Sharp MD-MS722 that I had sent to my parents home
in the US, as I live on a tiny island in the caribbean. I am going to
borrow a Mini Disc recorder from a friend here to make some recordings
before I leave for good (moving to Johannesburg South Africa). He has
either a Sony MZ-R30 or MZ-R50. Anyone out there have these machines
that would like to try an experiment and try to record on the Sony and
then try to play back on the Sharp? If the mono doesn't work I will
just record in stereo, although that is not necessary for the recordings
I am making and doubling the record time is very attractive.

I have the following equipment:
Denon DMD 1000 (hifi)
Sony JE920 (hifi)
Sony R55 (portable)
Sharp 821 (portable)
Sharp 722 (broken portable!)
Aiwa F70 (portable)

I've recorded mono on almost all of them and never had playback problems. I
tried recording mono on the R55 for you then replaying on the 821 and it was
fine. The 722 played it too, but I can't really vouch for it's reliability
as it had a bath and has never been the same since. The fact it played it
suggests any other 722 would do the same. If you want me to test other
combinations just let me know, but I've never heard of a compatibility
issue.

AFAIK, all players/recorders will play back mono recordings but not all
recorders will record in mono.
Neither of my Sony MZ-R2 and Sony JA3-ES will record in mono but they both
play back a mono recording from my Sharp 701...

Add my JA30ES to being a playback-only unit with mono discs.
