Now if Quaife would hurry up and make a proper diff for it (or maybe they
do and Quaife USA doesn't import it). They list diffs for MGBs, Volvo 240s,
BMW 2002s, but no MBZ products. I'd love to have a Torsen for my 116.

So do you think I could do that to Brunnhilde? Granted she is a few
years older, but how cool would it be cruising around in an old orange
punkin-colored diesel wagon, and slidin up next to a 911Turbo (there are
a couple I see cruising through the hood now and again, with guys who
look like they just need to be smacked) and smokin its ass bigtime?
That would be some fun. Maybe get a plate that says SMOKIN.

Not if the Porsche guy knows how to drive. A really fast 24v
123 might do 13.7 in the quarter, at around 110 mph. That would
take a 1970's Turbo Carrera, but not a late model Turbo.

Re: [MBZ] Adjusting the turbo wastegate (W123)

2005-06-15 Thread Dave M.

Paul,

I'd start by measuring your current boost pressure at the ALDA. If you're
getting 10-12psi, leave it alone. TUrning up the boost more will just incre
ase
EGT's with no additional power gain. If you're at less than 8psi, and you h
ave
already adjusted the ALDA for optimal off-idle power, then yes you should
tinker with the wastegate setting. If your 0-60 time is in the 14-15 second
range, you're already putting out factory rated power and won't get any mor
e
with the wastegate adjustment...

[MBZ] 115 wheel question

2005-06-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I think I might have asked this before but I cant remember. Does
anybody know for sure if the 115's, more specifically, the 115 300D
could be ordered with alloy wheels, or were all 115's with steel wheels
and hub caps? I know the standard equipment was the steel wheels but I
want to know if it was optional to have alloys. The reason I ask is
that I have a 115 300D with alloys and have also seen several on ebay
with alloys. I always thought alloys were not available on the 115. If
they were I will keep them on my car, if not, I will pull them off and
put steel wheels back on.

I have a feeling the late 115s (big bumpers) could be had with the alloys.

[MBZ] Re: Wanna buy a '92 S124 w/500hp OM606?

2005-06-15 Thread Dave M.

OK... how about if we import it to Canada (eh!) first, then move it from there
to the States? There's gotta be *some* way to get that masterpiece over here.
Think of the fun, blowing the doors of late model E55 AMG's and such...
buwaahahahahah! A 13-second diesel wagon has got to be the ultimate Q-ship.
Mauri says it even gets 30mpg, if you can keep your foot out of the
loud pedal.

(Yeah right - I'd probably be lucky to break 20mpg, what with my lead foot and
all!)

:-)

-dm

That's in Euros isn't it? If so, it computes to ~$13240. I suspect
you'd be in for more than a little tiff with the DOT thugs.

Re: [MBZ] Wanna buy a '92 S124 w/500hp OM606?

2005-06-15 Thread Dave M.
No need... the car already has ASD (the hydraulic, 100%-lock diff) and
they say

it has survived thus far. Seriously, they don't blow rear ends like popcorn,
like you'd think. I suspect it's because there's not a huge amount of torque
off-idle, which is where peak G's are on a V8 gasser, therefore the shock load
is reduced. Regardless, it's not a big deal to swap in the larger diff
from the

500E (also used in the W126 and R129), still retaining the ASD. I forget if
Mauri already upgraded to the stronger diff or if that was someone else across
the pond with a SuperTurbo, like Anssi. Oh, the wagon has 500E brakes, too.

Mitch, you can get a factory limited-slip diff for your 116. You need to find
one from a 6.9L in a salvage yard... also used in the late W126/5.6L combo, I
believe. It ain't a Torsen but it will eliminate the one-wheel-peels.

:-)

Now if Quaife would hurry up and make a proper diff for it (or maybe they
do and Quaife USA doesn't import it). They list diffs for MGBs, Volvo 240s,
BMW 2002s, but no MBZ products. I'd love to have a Torsen for my 116.

[MBZ] Congratulations, We Survived

2005-06-15 Thread redghost

 TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while
they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and
didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored
lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and
when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we
took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special
treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE
actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with
sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE
PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were
back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride
down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running
into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at
all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound,
no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat
rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in
us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks
and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not
put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or
rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who
didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem
solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW
TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow
up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives
for our own good.

and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how
brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't
it?!

2005-06-15 Thread Allan Streib
I have no idea, but it would seem that with some creativity it could be
made to fit almost anything. You would need to mount the compressor (a
York) and rig a drive belt for it. The condensor mounts in front of the
radiator. An auxilliary fan might be advisable, but the car I pulled it
out of did not have one.

The interior evap/blower unit is hung under the dash, and not integrated
into the existing heating or air vents at all. You'd have to cut some
holes in the firewall for the refrigerant tubing and cut some holes in
the transmission hump for the drain tubes.

Everything *appears* to be intact but I have no idea whether the system
works or holds pressure.

I've used Vintage air products on several projects and they work great. A
bit pricey at times but the equipment is good quality and is designed to
cool like crazy. If you install one performance will be strong, not
marginal.

Re: [MBZ] Please remove from list! OT

2005-06-15 Thread Mathieu J. Cama
Personally, if Kaleb wants to have a footer promoting his business or any
other businesses for that matter, all the power to him. It is his time,
energy, and personal expense that is allowing this list to run at the
moment. It seems many folks here are looking a gift horse in the mouth. If
you object to the footer, you are free to start your own list. However, it
seems that would make little sense as this list is up and running. Also,
this list seems to be remarkably fast and reliable. The folks who belong to
this list also will likely have use for the services that are being offered
in the footer. The footer is not obnoxious, takes up a minimum of bandwidth,
and is perfectly legitimate in being there. I fail to understand all of the
uproar about this. The mbz.org lists had footers, so why not this one too?
Let's keep it real, folks, and stick to the purpose of why these lists have
existed, to help one another.

Regards,

Mathieu Cama

Hear, hear.

Yahoo list footers are at least 1.5 times the length of Kaleb's.

Also, the footer will only appear once on the digest unless of course it
is quoted. I removed a few blank lines but am leaving it the way it is
for now. When/if I get a website going I will probably just have a line
in the footer along the lines of click here for important links to
valuable businesses or something like that. Actually, upon reviewing
the way dick had his footer setup, I have an even better idea of what to
do with it. How does this look?

Mathieu J. Cama wrote:

you object to the footer, you are free to start your own list. However, it
seems that would make little sense as this list is up and running. Also,
this list seems to be remarkably fast and reliable.

Kaleb,

If you will use "http://www.blablabla.com"; as opposed to just
"www.blablabla.com" it will produce a hyperlink making the path much
more convenient for the IE folks.

A footer in this case is a very good thing. It keeps the list going.

And, without a good strong footer the text all leans one way or
another, or just flops over, making it very hard to read.

Thanks to Kaleb for his work in getting this list up and running, and
all of us set up on it. That was really nice, and appears not to have
those kinds of issues. I missed the banter, diesel and otherwise, from
the community and it is nice to have it back.

Re: [MBZ] Adjusting the turbo wastegate (W123)

2005-06-15 Thread Andrew Cunningham
Paul,

There are two types:
kkk (hope you have this one)
garrett

kkk has kkk in a triangle on the side and pod with threaded rod and
nut like in the link below:
http://www.fastforward.ca/gallery/MFTurboCharger.jpg

The locknut and rod adjust the wastegate on a kkk

If you want to adjust the garrett, you have to go inside it and
rearrange stuff and it is a pain in the butt. If you search for
adjust 617 turbo - that is the one you will find the most info on
since you need a lot of info to actually do it.

[MBZ] new thermostat plus diesel purge = better performance

2005-06-15 Thread meadedillon
Dieselvolk,

Following provided as a data point for those who believe their motors run at
the correct temp (85 - 90 C).

A couple weeks ago I changed coolant, installed a new thermostat and ran a can
of diesel purge. I immediately noticed that the engine ran smoother. Shortly
thereafter I noticed that the temperature gauge was indicating a warmer than
before. Indicated temps are now in the 90-95 C range, vice 85-90 C range, and
when pulling a heavy load they stay right at or just below 100 C vice ~90 C.

Seat of the pants performance measurement indicates improvement, and I suspect
the mileage has gotten better as well (hard to tell because I just switched
diesel fueling stations and I've been pulling the boat around more often which
skews the number down). Also, I've had some carbon plumes roll out the tail
pipe.

Before I installed the new thermostat, I tested it on the stove top with a
digital thermometer, and it opened at 82 C and seemed to be fully open at 90 C,
but I didn't measure the opening to verify. I cycled it twice to make sure I
had the numbers correct, and to see what temperature it closed at during the
cooling cycle (~81 C).

I used to believe that the old thermostat was fine, but now I think that my
engine temp. gauge is off and reads slightly hot. I think that I remember Der
Dieseling Doktor saying that as the temperature sensor ages and resistance in
the wires increase, the gauge will tend to read hotter than actual temperature,
but that could be CRS.

USUALLY the temp reads low with increased resistance in the circuit
UNLESS it's in the main battery to ground resistance and that increases
- then the temp MAY read higher.

Did you fill the cooling system thru the top hose? If not, the added
heat MAY be from an air bubble in the cooling system. No idea how long
before it will work out and you'll notice that the coolant level is low,
but it can take months or more under unusual circumstances.

Is there a source anywhere that shows the temp v. resistance curve for
the temp sensor? And could you rig up a test circuit to check the gauge
with a rheostat (I think that would be the correct device) or something?

This must be a fairly standard thing as when you go buy a temp sensor to
replace one in say, an older American car/truck, they seem to work ok
with multiple gauges, similarly new gauges/existing sensors. Is this a
standard thing in some SAE document (or DIN maybe in the Benz case?).

I have always been curious about that.

Well, I was born in 1974, and all that applies to me for sure.

Mind you, my mom smoked, and I've have asthma my whole life.

My wife bought me a cool coffee-table book recently - Car Crashes.
It's photos of crashes taken in the 1940's and 1950's, bashed brains
and all. No seatbelts. They're there for a reason.

But bring back the pickup truck box rides!

It is seldom the gauge that's the problem. I have seen a sensor
temp/resistance table but can't find one now (don't recall if I saw it
in a workshop or diagnostic manual or in the TDM). It is USUALLY not the
sensor that fails with age (although they DO sometimes fail) but much
more likely the wire and connections that increase in resistance .

That makes sense, connections corrode, resistance increases, wires I
guess corrode a bit too.
