Re: [MBZ] 117 560SEL oil leaking from head?

2005-10-02 Thread Peter Frederick

Kaleb:

The tranny leak is very likely a servo cover gasket -- there are two on
that side, I think the B2 is the front one, but I'm not sure (it is
like the B1 servo cover). I don't remember where the vac modulator
is on that tranny, but it can also leak fluid, I think.

You will have to verify that the oil isn't coming from the valve cover
gasket -- I believe it is possible for the head gasket to leak oil as
there is a pressure passage back there for the camshaft oilier. I
think the oil pressure sending unit is on the left head, but I'm not
completely certain of this -- worth a check, as a pressure sender isn't
expensive.

[MBZ] 117 560SEL oil leaking from head?

2005-10-02 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Got my 89 560SEL out today to mess with it, see why its leaking so much
oil from the passenger side, and why its leaking tranny fluid. Well I
replaced the valve cover gasket on the passenger side, pulled the tranny
pan and changed the fluid and filter and gasket. Filled it back up.
Anyways, after a while I have fluid basically pouring out the passenger
rear corner of the pan, not sure if its actually coming from the pan
gasket area or above it. Almost looks like it MIGHT be coming from what
looks the area the b2 piston would be in except its not like the other
b2 pistons I have seen. I also noticed I have a steady drip of oil from
what looks like the back corner of the passenger side head. Rate is
about 1 drop in 5 seconds. Never heard of this on the 117. Yes on the
103 and 104 but not the V-8. Anybody else ever seen this? Im going to
recheck to make sure its not really coming out of the valve cover gasket
but it doenst look like. All I know is the car cant really be driven
because it smokes like a freight train from all the oil burning off.

correct? Why do you want to sell it? Email me off list if you like to

The vacuum gizmo is part of the vacuum circuit for the transmission. It's
used to modify the vacuum signal based on throttle position.

If it were 300 engine than I'd suspect that the pipe is the turbo oil
drain, but this is a 240 engine. Where does the other end of the pipe go?

this all about?? This engine was supposedly rebuild down in So Ca but it
used a qt of lub oil every 200 miles, and the gal (PO) got tired of adding

will get around to investigating. I'm hopping the crank is not

Re: [MBZ] Auto Shipping

2005-10-02 Thread Steve MacSween
There are at least two Google directory pages (and other similar ones) for
auto shippers.

My advice would be to go with a reliable one, which pretty much eliminates
shopping on price alone. A-A Auto Transport...

http://www.aa-auto.com/contact.html

... has hauled two cars to Canada for me, one from CA and one from TX, and
in both cases their service was top notch.

Remember that until you get into the really high line stuff (guys who ship
collector cars in covered vans, for example) all these companies are
essentially brokers who deal with the actual truck lines and owner/ops. Even
going from NY to IN your car will probably be on two trucks.

The cheaper ones (Dependable Auto Shippers, DAS, is the most notorious
because of its links to eBay Motors) will do it for quite a bit less --
unless you opt for their 'guaranteed service', which probably puts you near
where the reputable companies are in price -- but be prepared for the
excuses to start right away.

I have used other companies in the past, and in general had come to think
that it was normal to be told three weeks, and to instead see the car about
six weeks later.

Re: [MBZ] Whats this stuff on my 240D

2005-10-02 Thread Peter Frederick
The vacuum gizmo is the egr controller, you can discard it since you
don't have one. There will also be an EGR valve on the intake manifold.

The pipe going into the oil pan is the drain from the oil separator in
the air filter housing, all W123 diesels have one.

Likely the rebuilder put WAY too much clearance on the valve guides,
unless familiar with Benz practice. Easy way to check is to pull the
cam and remove a couple valve springs. If the valve will preceptibly
move sidways when lowered down off the seat, there is too much
clearance.

The other likely problem is way too much piston clearance, and that you
can only check by taking them out. Should be 0.001", very tight. You
can check for wear by pulling the head (as I'm sure you will be doing).

Unless run out of oil until the engine seized, likely the crank and
rods are fine, they don't cause problems in that engine. Pistons may
be shot, too, if there was excessive clearance, it causes the rings to
flex sideways and extrudes the ring lands.

Peter

Subject: [MBZ] Whats this stuff on my 240D

I have an engine I took out of a manual "83" 240D that I plan to rebuild
this fall. Its a Ca car if that makes any diff. Sorry I dont have a pic of
this, but there is a vacuum gizmo on top of the IP that is hooked into the
throttle linkage..Can anyone tell me what this is? Also there is a "pipe"
going into the top of the oil pan (passenger side of eng) Whats
this all about?? This engine was supposedly rebuild down in So Ca but it
used a qt of lub oil every 200 miles, and the gal (PO) got tired of adding
oil..So I bought it when it started knocking, pulled the eng and now I
will get around to investigating. I'm hopping the crank is not toast..sigh,
;-)

Well, it was. Copy-protected CDs break the long-established audio CD
standard. No CD player is "required," either legally or technically,
to play them or behave in any other useful way when faced with one.
They're a bastard misuse of the technology.

Its very easy to do on a 126 with it in the car, takes me about 20
minutes. On the 126, takes maybe 45.

One of my favorite road sections is MO94 from Dutow (MO47) to about 4
miles west of Defiance - as long as there aren't too many slow-pokes...

Another decent, shorter section is Cnty "W" from Eureka to House
Springs.

Or IL3 from Chester to Cairo - though I suppose that's a bit too far
from STL.

MO79 from I70 to Louisiana - or even all the way to Hannibal can be
nice.

IL100 from Alton to Grafton is also a pretty drive.

That's all I'm thinking of that are kinda close to Metro St. Louis.
(not counting IL3 - that one's not close...)

It is, assuming it is a federal-spec 722.3 car ('85 California cars had
a 722.4 trans). I've never done it on a 126, but it has much more room
to work than a 123, in which the B2 can be done in a day.

To elaborate a little on redghost's answer, yes, Mac does have a
way to mechanically remove a CD from any drive. You need a
straightened paperclip. Poke it into the hole redghost mentions, and
it will rachet the tray out.

The cool thing is that with a Mac you never need it.
