Exactly.
We'd never have any "bargins" or "diamonds in the rough" if a buyer, to be
"ethically correct", was to inform the seller what the item is worth. People
who want to sell stuff need to be familiar enough with what they are selling
to ask a reasonable price to get what the item is worth.
The "do your homework" phrase applies to many parts of our lives...but
people rarely do their homework (namely most political/religious/ethics etc
discussions).

hi Chuck!

so, your morals change based on the situation, and whether or not
it's to your advantage? (thanks for the warning! ;-P )
just for the sake of argument, where exactly do you draw that line?

would i take advantage of good price with the seller in full
knowledge? absolutely, and i'd negotiate to my best position, and we
could both feel honorable about how it wound up.
would i take advantage of someone who didn't know what they were
selling? not at all. (gender is of no relevance, except that i generally
wouldn't expect that most women would be as likely to know about the
value of cars, based on most of their lower general interest in things
motorized.)

Sunil,

obviously, you're missing the point; it's not about gender or whose mom it
was at all, so ignore that. pretend it's your dad, your uncle, your younger
brother, your best friend, or anyone who your interest in outweighs your own
selfish interests.

if i recognize that the junker in your barn is missing a 'C' instead of a
'F' where it says "_ord" on the hood and you don't know any better, how would
you feel after i used my advantage to lowball you? would you like being the
fool? i realize some cultures would say you deserved whatever you let happen to
you, but is that what you *want*?
are you going to have more respect for someone who takes advantage of you,
or someone who is upstanding enough with you to make sure you're dealing fairly?

the point is; while it is obviously a buyer/seller beware market, how would
you want people to treat you? do you have a problem treating people the way you
would like to be treated yourself?

Assuming the clutch and adjustment are working ok, and the shift linkage is
in proper adjustment, then pull the trans, clean it up and replace the
synchro rings as necessary. it becomes pretty obvious when you pull the
cover off. I have only seen 1 bad manual trans in 30+ years of MBs. That
one I believe was run dry, and then WAS filled with 90W. It was not on one
of my cars, but one i agreed to look at for another guy. I replaced a
couple of bearings, some synchro rings and the seals. While you are in
there, may as well check the bearings and replace the seals.

Careful disassembly, and cleanliness are the order of the day. On the
older ones, there were split roller bearings with brass cages and such. No
trouble if you are careful, but lots of rollers can fall out if you are not
careful. I can't say about the construction of the newer trans used on the
123.

Not just that it's less than it's worth, it's nearly 5 times less than what

See, I've heard that from other people too. I don't get it. If I'm
selling

something, people can offer whatever they want. That's what it's worth to
them. If I don't want to accept it that's fine. I certainly wouldn't
hold

it against them.

I've run into it lately where we're kind of looking for a house. We found
one we rather liked that was originally listed for some ungodly amount of
money. When we looked at it it was in the really high end of what we
might

be able to afford. So after thinking about it, we could probably offer a
price close to what they were asking if it were perfect for us. But it's
not. There's enough little things that would add significantly to the
cost,

so we could only offer some amount less than half of what they were
originally asking. But we never officially submitted that because we
might
offend them. Nothing personal, that's what we could afford to pay based
on

what we have and what we would need to do...

I just don't get the "I'm offended because you're offering less than what
I
think it's worth" thinking... Seems like if it's that important to you
you

shouldn't be selling it... (:

Then again, the GOP has a bunch of old farts out here. Hard to find

Re: [MBZ] 201 status

2006-10-11 Thread Jim Cathey

(Our e-mail feed is down courtesy of our ISP, I have no idea if
this is going to get through. Consider it a test!)

October 9, 2006

Finished up the modified defogger relay (the Road Trip Relay) that runs
the cooler plug. This should correct all the faults of the original
installation.

...No, not quite done yet. The timer works well, _except_ that
when engaged it clicks on for a half second, off for another half
second, then comes on for the remainder of the time. Apparently the
charging time of the timing capacitor is significant, and the new
circuit (which essentially lost D2) didn't charge the capacitor until
it was engaged, unlike the original circuit, which kept it charged in
readiness. I think I can add another diode to allow restoration of D2
which should cure the double-start problem.

This time for sure! Modification (in addition to the large capacitor
[C3] that was added earlier) consisted of adding Q3, another
general-purpose PNP transistor (I used 2N3906), R8, 3900 ohms, and D6.
The modifications also required rewiring D1 by cutting two traces and
adding a jumper. The schematic of the modified relay, for future
reference, is available in several formats:

Illustrator:http://cathey.dogear.com/mb190d/defogger.ai
PostScript: http://cathey.dogear.com/mb190d/mdefogger.eps
PDF:http://cathey.dogear.com/mb190d/mdefogger.pdf
GIF:http://cathey.dogear.com/mb190d/mdefogger.gif

The original circuit remains essentially the same, except that the
relay coil is powered during the timing cycle via the new Q3 instead
of through D1 from the output. (This eliminates triggering the relay
when the always-on switch [for the solar charger] is engaged.) D1
remains in order to jump-start the relay. D6 is added so that it
keeps the timing capacitor charged while the Start input is energized,
eliminating the retriggering problem.

If it were not for the Solar Charger switch, the relay modifications
would consist _only_ of the addition of C8 and D6. (In which case an
external diode is needed to keep from back-powering the ignition while
the relay is timing out. With the full set of modifications the
external diode is no longer necessary. As it's already in the car,
however, I'm going to just leave it there, it doesn't hurt anything.)

...Coming home at night showed that I have again lost the rear window
defogger, plus the high beam indicator light, and the windshield
washer fluid level light. The SRS light also came on a few times.
Sigh. I _did_ get a box of stuff from Rusty for the car, especially
my new glow plug, so that was nice. I wonder when I'll get a chance
to put it in?

October 10, 2006

Checked into the rear window defogger, and it appears that the lamp in
the switch has gone out, and that otherwise it is working properly.
As this lamp is an LED this is extremely rare failure, it may be
possible that the ground for that switch (used only for the lamp) is
bad. The high-beam lamp in the cluster also appears to be bad, as is
the washer fluid lamp. I think I need to schedule an instrument
cluster removal soon.

I installed the finished Road Trip Relay, which passed all its tests.

...I had a little time after work, so I pulled the instrument cluster
and the defogger switch. (What a pain.) The defogger switch has a
light bulb inside, not an LED! First time I've ever seen that on a
car this new. Of course the bulb was burned out, as was the one for
the windshield washer fluid level. I'll replace them, probably with
good used. (It's not like either one gets that much on-time.) The
high-beam indicator lamp, however, is OK. Something else is wrong
there it seems.

I then replaced the two burned-out bulbs. My parts box is full of
mostly burned-out bulbs as it turns out. (I just grab them at the
U-Pull when I see them.) But eventually I found two that worked. The
high-beam indicator was a little more involved. I disassembled the
cluster only to find that the PCB trace to the lamp had been worn
through by some of the plastic of the cluster, probably due to age and
vibration, perhaps in conjunction with a too-tight mounting screw. I
soldered a wire across the break. Then the bulb worked again, and I
reassembled the cluster. While I was there I numbered the big cluster
connector's pins on the back (which are labeled on the trace side)
with a Sharpie. I can install it again tomorrow, it's dark outside!

October 11, 2006

Installed the instrument cluster. A guy without a left hand probably
couldn't do this, because only my left hand can reach up behind the
dash (once the heating duct pipe is disconnected and its boot removed
from the area) to reach the retaining collar of the speedometer cable.
This is a real PITA job, one of the worst design features of the car.
Would have been an excellent car to use an electronic speedometer on.

See, I've heard that from other people too. I don't get it. If I'm selling
something, people can offer whatever they want. That's what it's worth to
them. If I don't want to accept it that's fine. I certainly wouldn't hold
it against them.

I've run into it lately where we're kind of looking for a house. We found
one we rather liked that was originally listed for some ungodly amount of
money. When we looked at it it was in the really high end of what we might
be able to afford. So after thinking about it, we could probably offer a
price close to what they were asking if it were perfect for us. But it's
not. There's enough little things that would add significantly to the cost,
so we could only offer some amount less than half of what they were
originally asking. But we never officially submitted that because we might
offend them. Nothing personal, that's what we could afford to pay based on
what we have and what we would need to do...

I just don't get the "I'm offended because you're offering less than what I
think it's worth" thinking... Seems like if it's that important to you you
shouldn't be selling it... (:

I was then contacted by MBCA counsel Robert Beltz who, in an

Re: [MBZ] Low miles 83 CD available

2006-10-11 Thread Ralph W
I might be willing to trade in my daily driver CD for a lower milage
straight rust free version. CD's are easily the most desireable of the 123
breed. More details please. Of course Sunil has first dibs but I'm sure this
car is worth more than a measely 2K. Heck it's got at least another 250K
left on the clock.
