This seem to hold the car very nicely.

If you are working on the struts, put the stands under the outer end of
the control arm so that the cup on the jack stand is secured in the
hole in the arm, then let the weight down. Have a care, that spring is
lethal if it gets out, make SURE it's secure! That way you don't need
a spring compressor to change struts, strut mounts, or ball joint.

The front caliper is floating, the rear is the usual twin opposed
piston type. Unless the boots on the pins are torn, there is no need
to lubricate the pins -- replace them if the boot is bad.

Watch for sticking calipers on the rear, they don't get used much in
normal braking and the pads rust in place. Rebuild in the rears is
very easy, though, so if sticky, I'd rebuild them.

Re: [MBZ] Flying the Southwest

2007-04-15 Thread Bob Rentfro
It's certainly less expensive if you have a plane at your disposal. I have
no idea what rates are now. I haven't messed with it since '79. Some
instructors were not too wild about training in a plane they were'nt
familiar with. I remember doing all my time with an instructor in a Cessna
150, and got most of my hours in dad's Cherokee.

When going for your license, its much cheaper to just buy your own plane
then you only have to rent the instructor. If I ever decide to go back
and finish up and get my license, my mother and her husband have a Piper
Cherokee that I could probably borrow for training.

Thanks for sharing those photos - excellent! You;re right about Gen

that is was *much* more expensive to rent a plane & instructor in NJ than

Yep, flying the friendly skies in a Cessna 150 is a lot different from a

[MBZ] Severe Hydroplaning After Suspension Work

2007-04-15 Thread John Peterson
Friends, what a scary day. I was out with my 124 for the first time at
highway speeds today after having front shocks and control arms replaced
on my 300D. I got up to 50 MPH and hit a puddle and the car felt like
/I was on ice/- worse. Just unbelievable- /no/ control at all. Spooked
me enough to pull over and see if the wheels were on the car. I
continued at 35-40 MPH home but the car was absolutely dangerous and I
can't figure out what this could be. On dry pavement the car drives
okay- a bit of "jump" of the wheel over bumps that I didn't notice before.

This never felt this way. I had remarked to others how nice the 124
with good tires is a wonderful car in the rain. I have never, never
felt any hydroplaning whatsoever in my 300D, and today's hydroplaning,
at very low speeds, was not hydroplaning but total lack of control. The
car just left the lane all together, and continued with every puddle.

I'm kicking myself for actually driving the car home. I should have
parked it. Funny thing is, feels almost normal on dry road- just a bit
stiff and like I said, the wheel seems to jump when I hit a bump.

They changed the control arms (which have new bushing and ball joints of
course) and the two front shocks with Bilsteins. They did not do an
alignment as I wanted a dealer to do this. Could lack of alignment have
such an effect, such a dangerous effect?

Anybody seen this? What a scare.

[MBZ] W124 jacking??

2007-04-15 Thread E M

Want to jack up the W124 300E soon and pull all the wheels to check the
brakes and just detail in there. I see the jack points on the sills, but
where is a good place to put axle stands, both front and rear?? I''ll
probably just do one end at at time, but may put is all up at once to change
the brake fluid in a few months.

With regards to the calipers, are they floating? If so, how often do you
guys grease the pins? I usually do the other cars about every 6 months.

Thanks again,

[MBZ] drain hole question

2007-04-15 Thread E M

The softe rubber drain hole spout is missing off the passenger side of the
front underside sill, just infront of the jack point. I've stuck my fingers
up there and tried to clean out some of the dirt and sand, but after a good
wash, or heavy rain, I notice when I drive it a little, then turn into the
driveway, it will leave a trail of water. Where is the water draining
from? Mercedes wouldn't run a drain hole through a main sill member, would
they. No rust there, but doesnt' seem like good long term planning.
Anyway, anyone know a source for the rubber drain spout, other than the
dealer? If not, I'll just grab one next week at the dealer when I'm there
to get some grease for the sunroof.

Thanks everyone,

[MBZ] oil pan gasket??

2007-04-15 Thread E M

Hi Gang,

Putting some highway miles on the W134 gas engine over the past few days.
Still cold here and it has the thinner oil in it. I notice a small drip of
oil after a run. Cleaned all the engine and concluded it's the oil pan
gasket. I don't have manuals yet, but I take it you drop the sound shield,
then the pan? Does the book call for gasket sealer with the new gasket, or
just put it in dry? Also, what are the torque numbers for the oil pan nuts?
Thanks,

Did the W124 come with one too? My new to me car is missing most of the
stuff in the trunk. I have the spare tire, and jack, but that's it. Anyone
have a picture of what the full took kit should look like, and anything else
that should be in the truck, like the triangle, flares, etc.?

Anyone know where I can pickup any of these missing things, at a reasonable
price?

Re: [MBZ] Car radios

2007-04-15 Thread Rich Thomas
I doubt it, its just that they are broadcasting other stuff on those
channels. The NPR station broadcasts all the talk shows on one channel,
all music on another, and I think the regular programming on the 3rd.
A bunch of the FM stations have HD channels too, not sure how many each
one has. THey say it is "near CD" quality.

The table HD radios are like $200 now too, I think there are only 2-3
companies licensed to build them. I have not looked at it that closely
though.

You are right though, probably hard to tell the quality in a diesel car,
but the content is different.

ones I have gotten lately have little tabs on the wires too that say,
e.g., LSPKR, PWR, etc. So that part is easy.

I put one in the 300TD, had to splice some wire to the rear speakers at
the fader (you have to bypass it and hook the rear wires to the rear
wire outputs on the rcvr, so you might want to pull up the shifter boot
to make that part easier, or do some fishing if not. You will need to
find some always-on power somewhere to keep your settings going, I
forgot where I got that -- cig lighter splice maybe? You can use some
of the other existing radio wires but you have to figure out which is
which. I forget now what they are, but someone in the past posted that
info. I recall it was fairly apparent what was what.

A trick to determine which of those spkr wires is which is to touch a
pair to a 9V battery and you will hear the spkr click. They have some
color code, but I don't remember it. You might want to buy some
crimpers and in-line crimp connectors and a bit of spkr wire if you
don't have that, to do the hook-ups. Or if you have a soldering iron
that works better, with some heat shrink tubing over the joints. You
can also get those little squeeze connectors that fit over the wires and
have little pins that penetrate and connect them.

The new unit slides right into the DIN mount, and latches in there, then
pop the surround cover on and you're all set. When I did Brunnhilde's
system, it was like an hour job.

My suggestion, for whatever it is worth, is to buy a relatively
inexpensive unit (there are units available for less than $100 that work
fine -- most all of them have the same guts, but the more expensive ones
have flashy displays and more buttons and such) and put some money into
some relatively decent speakers as that is what makes the sound good
(most anything will sound lots better that what is there now). I put a
pair of $50 somethings into the wagon in back (I think they were 4
inchers, they just about fit the metric holes), they put out some decent
sound. The fronts are hard to change if I recall others' comments, so I
left them in. Remember you will be competing with the klattaklatta so
more than that is not much better sound. Get one that does MP3 and has
an aux input for your music player -- most all do these days -- so you
can burn CDs with lots of tunes, and use your portable too.

Have fun!

Yeah well the Iowa ethanol farmers are driving up taco prices here, a
staple of life, so I hope y'all have to pay $4!

[MBZ] W123 200Ds in Chile

2007-04-15 Thread Rich Thomas
I just saw a couple of 200D 123s in Valparaiso Chile when I was there
this past week. I was quite surprised to see that designation. They
were in pretty good condition but I wondered how they managed to get
themselves up some of the hills there! Must have some serious granny
gear in that tranny -- granny in the tranny!

Diesel was quite a bit lower price than gasoline -- 450 pesos/liter for
diesel, about 600 for gas, which is about $US0.85 and 1.13 or so. Today
at the local gas station I saw diesel and gas both for $US2.75, I guess
I can't complain.

This is kind of interesting... I didn't know the 123 chassis was made
with a diesel engine smaller than the 2.4. Stick shift and the
typical Euro goodies--manual climate controls and cloth seats are
visible in the picture, and the seller says manual windows and locks
too.
