Re: [MBZ] Rust at jacking point 83' 300D

2007-04-21 Thread LarryT

Hi Kaleb,
You askedWonder if there is a market for shells

I think that's a definate Yes! There are a LOT of old W123s that are
mechanically sound but are being eaten alive by the rust bug. I did just
that with my 67 MGB. The body was too far gone to repair. I had a estimate
of $3500 just for the labor to weld in the new panels I would provide. A
new Heritage Body (made from original jigs) costs around $9k - but I bought
a rust free body from Ca and am transferring all my good parts to the good
body after I painted it.

Actually, my 240D may be one that would benefit from your
suggestion/question. My rockers ook good but I suspect the inside of the
rockers are rusting. Same for the floors - I have patched the worst parts
but there are all kinds of minir areas thatcan get real bad, real fast.
Other than the rockers and floors my 240D is excellent. But bad rockers is
a killer.If I had a 84 240D with a bad engine/tranny I could easily
transfer my mechanicals and interior - as always, price is the driving
factor. But if you;re considering sending them to the scrap pile and
getting maybe $50 at most for one, I would think you could sell them for
$500-$1000 and everybody wins.

I run into that problem quite a bit. I have several cars now that are
probably not worth fixing yet the bodies have no rust. I hate crushing
cars that have no rust with their only problems being bad paint, bad
interior, bad engine, bad electrical etc. If they have 1 or 2 redeeming
qualities I will save them, but if everything is bad but they have no
rust, I usually part them. Wonder if there is a market for shells of
cars, IE, no doors(or maybe doors if a person wants, no interior, no
electrical, no suspension.

I guess what's most interesting to me is that it seems to only be this
one

and
some minor bits elsewhere but this is the most major structural looking
I've

As long as the engine holds out Perhaps I'll just have to add a tube

So what's the probable plan then? Just watch it and when it seems like
the
metal is too fatigued(is this when the jack-rod comes up through the
floor?), dig the whole thing out and rebuild?

Fairly well. But once the rust attacks like you've seen it's
probably got a very good start on the thicker metal that's

2007-04-21 Thread John Peterson
Thanks, I popped the cover off and turned it 1/2 turn and it tightened
up my shifts. I had a bit of a slip / flare in the 1-2.
I don't have a MityVac but am going to get one so I can check the
pressure coming into the transmission.

My symptoms were a slow softening of the 1-2 shift over the last few
months, and generally softer shifts on all. Maybe there is a leak
somewhere and the transmission is getting less pressure, that might
explain needing to turn up the T.

Transmission is rebuilt MB with 19k on it.

But Marshall is right, no way to tell anything without the MityVac.

If I buy one, anyone in MA CT RI is welcome to borrow it as needed.

[MBZ] Mity Vac

2007-04-21 Thread John Peterson
Does the Mity Vac come with any T unions to join the tubing to the
line? Is this something from the dealer or would any machine shop have
them? I think I remember someone referencing a MB part number for the T
and the tubing.

Thanks friends.

Any input?

Re: [MBZ] Mity Vac

2007-04-21 Thread LarryT

Hi John,
There are a huge assoetment of T's, Y's, X's, reducers and everything in
between - many are available at your local AutoZone or AdvanceAuto - many of
the fittings are interchangeable with fuel lines, windshield washers, vaccum
lines and on on. Aquarium air hoses use a variety of fittings including
valves and manifolds.

The mityvac comes with a set of conical fittings so they can fit almost
anything -

Good luck -

Have you tried Benz Friendz in Georgetown? I dont know that they would
have it, but they would definately know who to go talk to...

Also, Adam at http://dieselhead.net/ had a wrecked W124 wagon a few
months back, if he doesnt still have it he probably knows who does.

I purchased an after-glow kit for our 617.912 when we moved here to Los

I've used Aurora myself a few times. (Tranny for 450 SL, various
560 SL bits, some stuff for the 240D I sold.) Not inexpensive, and
a surprisingly small outfit, but usually very helpful. They'll ship.
Not being open on weekends sometimes hurts their utility to me.
Anybody needs a 107 SL hardtop they're your guys. (I sort of have
an extra, they laughed when I offered it to them.)

So I take it that welding the bearing race didn't help? What's that,
you didn't? Lack of tools you say? Tsk, tsk... Eine schonde.

It's simple electricity, so far as the plug wiring goes. I'd just
say follow the instructions. What you take out might not match what
they're talking about, but what you end up with should match.

Well, I'd need to first press the hub out of the bearing--no easy task. I
don't have any arbors that are the correct size and strength to pull this
off with any confidence. Then I'd have to torch the offending bits out of
the center. Then run the beads...then...hey, life's too short for this
shit. In retrospect, I should've just bit the bullet and dropped the car
off, and let someone else fret and fuss with it. I have a feeling this is
one of life's little lessons that I won't learn--repeat offender, here.

This is where I reach for a BFH and a heavy chunk of steel to serve
as a punch. What are you going to do, wreck it? That's pretty much
where you are already. Shouldn't need any heat until it's time to
put on the beads, nor any fine tools until it's time to try to put
in the new bearing. I love it when that approach pans out.

BFH and I go wayy back. But, he can't help much in this instance. Due
to the design of this silly thing, there's no way to support the front of
the carrier without destroying the backing plate. And, there's simply not
enough room or purchase area to support it from the backside, either. Ma
Benz wanted you to use their tools and no others. Reinhard says his boyz
use a slide hammer to pull the hub, then the bearing, while it's on the
car. This job really is set up to do in situ--my bad. Learn it - know it
- live it.

Well, it's done. The Becker Europa Cassette (599) is now
non-cassette, and has a front panel USB charging jack,
coax power plug, and stereo input jack. Not quite as
pretty as I'd envisioned, but definitely good enough.

When you plug into the power jack the radio turns off,
including the dial light, enabling the stereo input.

My wife is trying it out today. (CD player, not iPod yet.)

It looks quite nice. The only thing I'd quibble about would be the
placement of the connectors on the panel -- a better arrangement would
make it look more professional. Some labeling would help, too.
