Re: [MBZ] Anyone have a KLIMA relay?
> Looks like 2 of my 3 603s are in need of a (Never fails) KLIMA > relay. The one I need is a 001 545 80 05 for a 124 87 TD wagon. They fail just fine. And sometimes resoldering brings them back. I repaired one, but its problem was an internal relay coil that opened up. Enclosed are my notes on the subject, Alex Chamberlain donated the relay towards the list's fund of car repair knowledge. -- Jim Conts: (1) Klima from 603.960 (SDL). 001 545 80 05 D-Klima Kickdown 05 8958 40 12V (1) Note indicating gift to knowledge bank. Notes: Not for repair, just FYI general list information. I expect that a resoldering job may cure it. The condition of the pins was good, not particularly corroded. I then opened it up. It is built on a single-sided PCB with two relays, two National Semiconductor 4-bit COP processors (COP411L-MNG/N & COP425LN), an LM2903 dual comparitor (date codes on the IC's from 84-86), four signal transistors, eleven diodes, and one power transistor. Plus the usual crop of passive components, notably five aluminum electrolytic capacitors. The two relays looked good, but the soldering on the back of one of them was fried. The board is even blackened at one pin, but the cooked pin doesn't have a trace going anywhere else, what's up with that? Fried drippy solder is in several other places, most of which aren't high power at all. Did this stuff migrate from the hot spot(s)? Did a non-solderer attack the board? Regardless, it appears that this thing might possibly be brought back to life by a good resoldering, there's plenty of solder joints that appear crystallized. If, of course, either masked-ROM COP is dead it's all over, but the rest of the components look to be generic. A fried relay contact might also be difficult to deal with, the relays are smallish and would be hard to substitute. Of note is that one relay is DPST (NC), and both contacts are wired in parallel. It's fine. The other is DPDT, both NO contacts in parallel, but with one NC contact missing, and the burned spot is the lone NC contact, yet there's no trace from it to anywhere. If both NC contacts were there and in parallel would this unit have failed? By spreading the current across two relay contacts the heat is spread out, and the intertie copper also serves as a heat sink. The pristine surfaces of the relay contacts indicate that they weren't overloaded per se, but that the poor heat dissipation ruined the contact soldering. But what heat could there be on a lone pin that doesn't go anywhere? I pulled the (identical) Klima from our SDL, and its solder looks a whole lot better, though I notice a bit of 'coldness' starting on some of the relay pins. The fried relay pin indeed doesn't appear to go anywhere, so how did it get fried? The _only_ sign of heat is at that one non-connected pin. It's a mystery. Perhaps I should try to repair it, I've got a car that it'll fit perfectly in for testing. Notes: Alex did try resoldering, and claims no skill at all. OK, weird blobs explained. Denies burning the spot in the board, so that's a mystery. I'll try repairing this one and swapping it into the SDL. If it works, I'll add this to my service list. New Klimas are >$100, so it ought to be cost-effective. (And will help prolong the supply of NOS spares.) Notes: August 2 2006: 8:00 PM: Resoldered. Went easily, took a little less than half an hour. Board is not varnished, so that nasty paint stripper step is unnecessary. Will set repair rate at $20, if Klima tests out. Burned mark on board is explainable as a pad that lifted off during soldering, I had one do that (it was for uninstalled components) and it left a black mark where the copper had been. As the original burn was under a pad that went nowhere, it was easy to overheat and burn/lift off during soldering. Just like the one I did myself. Will test Klima at some future convenient time. Notes: August 3 2006: Klima doesn't work. Back to the drawing board. Notes: August 4 2006: 9:30 AM: Put the sick apparently-not-yet-repaired Klima on the bench. (Also brought in the good one from the car.) Began tracing the schematic. Measured the tachometer input on the car, the Fluke says it's about 1800 Hz at 3V at idle. The Klima seems to react at about 800 Hz, as soon as that frequency is applied on the bench the kickdown relay activates, allowing the kickdown switch to work. The good Klima will activate the compressor

Jim and all, The new Silver Stars do have a shorter rated life, but 1 year of "light" use should not take one out! I would jump Sylvania on it. Or you can step up to HID. I just went to HID (4300K) on my ML which used the H7 55 watt halogen lamp for low beams. The ML lenses diffused the light so well that it was often difficult to tell if they were even on. The HIDs light up the Botts Dotts on the freeway with an incredible flat beam! And they are legal in all states! The HID uses just 35 watts and gives 3 times the light and 10 times the life of Halogen. The HID Kits are available for nearly all lenses using replaceable halogen bulbs. My set was just over $100 delivered from an Ebay dealer. I first installed a pair of HID lights on my dune buggy over 4 years ago. My eyes were getting old and I needed more light than the four halogen lights I was running. What a difference! The white light makes shadows on the dunes a 1000 feet away. The Off-road boys run as many as 8 of these and their investment runs in the thousands, just for good lighting. The design of HID seems to permit them to take a lot of pounding without failure. Re: [MBZ] OT Satellite Internet connection?
On 6/18/07, Harry Watkins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Anyone connected to one of these? I think there are two choices, but I'm > not sure about that. Make sure that you get a *bi* directional satellite system and not one of the *uni* direction systems that requires you use a 56K modem for send and Sat for receive. They are older, and not as often seen, but do still exist. So just make sure what you're getting. Also, make sure you get the "universal" type that allows Mac and Linux access. even if you don't ever intend to run those systems. The reason is that the "Win Only" systems usually interface via card in the system or serial or USB ports and are tied to Windows because of hardware drivers. The "universal" systems are much more like a regular router, using ethernet to connect. So system upgrades and system changes are relatively easy. No software to reinstall. Just plug back into your ethernet cable and go. Also, the speeds on Satellite systems are pretty good. On par with DSL and Cable usually, sometimes better. The main difference is lag time from radio transmission, through air to space, to reception by satellite, turn around and transmission to ground, through space to air, to reception by Sat Provider, to internet. If you are downloading a movie, no problem. If you are *streaming* a movie. Or playing games you're DoomSlayer49, aren't you. Kicking butt and moving on to kick more butt, right? Anyway, I digress, anything that requires low latency is very bad with Sat. Very high latency. Anything else, websurfing, straight downloads, no prob. -- Knowledge is power... Power Corrupts. Have a DS1? Bandwidth shared. OC3? Shared. SONET Loop? Shared. The only distinction is *where* the sharing begins. So unless you have true point to point circuits to each individual site you access. Ergo, DS1 direct to Google, DS1 direct to Microsoft, DS1 direct to Apple, DS1 direct to White House.gov and the Cisco 12K to tie them all down on, you are sharing bandwidth. My preference in DSL over Cable is DSL solely for the fact that I've worked Comcast tech support. I know how much they hate second and third computers on the line behind the modem and how hard they work to prevent it. My DSL provider, in contrast, doesn't care. Knows I run services and allows this and my IP while not static, hasn't ever changed in 2 1/2 years of using their service . I know because dyndns keep cancelling my account because of "inactivity" in the IP address. They keep telling me I'm static :) And when you're an insane geek like me and have a 42 U cabinet about to be filled with systems that is the important distinction. -- Knowledge is power... Re: [MBZ] Cheap Mercedes, W126 rebuild
Well, the transmission shifted fine except for slipping in 3rd, which is common symptom of worn out clutches. Thus I generally just replace the clutches and the seals. I do not go into the valve body unless there is a problem, and the valve body can be rebuilt with transmission in car. As far as bands go, they are very expensive and I have not seen them worn out on cars with 300k miles. As far as pistons I will replace the B2 if it has the older version, but the 1991 had the newer version, when I did my 1987 420SEL it had the older B2 and thus I replaced it. I boxed up the worn alternator parts, I'll shop them around looking for replacements today if I can. I scrubbed the AC and alternator mounting brackets which had been soaking in the solvent tank; this is messy, smelly, and basically not much fun. I removed the throttle linkage and scrubbed it off in the solvent tank as well. I removed the air filter housing and EGR pipe (for 'cleaning'), and then washed off the oil and air filter housings with brake cleaner. (I used up another can and a half.) With DSL, the bandwidth to the 'telco equipment' is all yours. After that it is shared. The cable company just shares it earlier. For example, the company I worked at sold DSL units you could mount on telephone poles. They would have four T1 lines coming in, and 24 or 48 DSL lines coming out. IMO, it really depends on the specific provider in your neighborhood. Each one is going to have different policies for what they see as profitable (aka how oversold your neighborhood is), and each one is going to have different service departments. Pick whats best in your area. For my area its cable... since I don't have to pay $30 a month to get basic phone service (I'm one of those cell phone only people). YMMV John PS. DSL should be having much higher bandwidth sometime in the future. Check out ADSL2+ and VDSL (one if which goes into the 50+ megabits range :) I believe it is for video on demand applications, so that telecom companies can compete with cable. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Ummm, nope. You've got apparently 100Mbs between your computer and the Cable modem which is pretty common but thats related to the network connection speed between the two and nowhere else. Actual internet connection speed is probably at max 1.5Mbs. I've got 1000Mbs between my computer and the switch, the switch then talks to the DSL modem at 100Mbs and the cable modem talks to home base at the 1.5Mbs I pay for. -Curt Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2007 06:56:36 -0400 From: "LarryT" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] DSL To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "Mercedes Discussion List" Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original You wrote:< all the time>> Howdy - My cable modem runs at 100mbps all the time - it's been like that for 4 or 5 years. There is one-way sattelite such as you describe, and there is two-way. Two way costs more, and you MUST have it professionally installed, it's illegal for you to set up a sat transmitter in your own yard. Either way, you get weather outages and speed of light time delays. The time delay doesn't really matter unless you are playing action games or trading the financial markets. Throwing an extra 4 seconds of lag into my futures trading would cost me more than I pay for internet service. Cable internet is nice, our provider is 10Mbs download, quite a bit faster than DSL. Have not tried the phone service -- we have cable outages least once or twice a year during storms; I cannot remember the last time the telephone did not work. Re: [MBZ] Cheap Mercedes, W126 rebuild
When you're talking about rebuilding them like that, you have to plan to "drive the money out". The value will be in the service, enjoyment, and pride you get from the car, not it's resale value. I started down that path with the SLC, but kind of lost interest after I got the 124 chassis. Re: [MBZ] DSL
It's all a matter of features, service, and what you already have. If you already have an analog phone line, and no cable, it doesn't make sense to get the cable run just for Internet access. If you are using cable for TV and your phone service, don't get DSL just for Internet access. If you've got both, see what gives you the most service for the least money. [MBZ] Cheap Mercedes, W126 rebuild
I just pulled the engine and transmission out of a 130k mile 1991 560SEL to fix the oil leaks. The upper oil pan gasket had about 1 inch missing in the gasket and someone in the past had put epoxy on the outside in an attempt to fix the oil leak. My only guess would be it was that way from factory and deal attempted to patch it. But while I was there I rebuilt transmission cleaned everything spotless, fixed two minor rust spots, POR15 is great stuff. I also fixed the suspension pump leak, new front and rear main seals, etc. Last year I completely rebuilt the front end and AC. Thus for the $7k I paid for the car 2 years ago I would agree that there is no such thing as a cheap Mercedes. However to drive a perfect W126 is kind of priceless. Note I took lots of pictures of the transmission rebuild if anyone is interested. Now my debate is to get rid of my 1985 300SD or go through the same process on it. It has 300k miles on it and needs a complete rebuild. I am thinking it would be fun, but wonder if I would get any money out of it in the end. I am thinking I would be better off buying a 300SDL and rebuilding it, I just love the long wheel base W126s.
