Yup. An MOV can work well. But to not plan for it to fail - and
shorted _is_ it's most common failure mode - is as silly as a
paperclip instead of a fuse in the fuse box!!

It would seem to me you have found the problem.

So, are you planning to rebuild the original?

Or build your own, now that you have figured out how it
functions?

Or locate an off-the-shelf regulator that will do the job?

The easy test is to disconnect the prop shaft and then put the car in
gear, if you still have a vibration then you know it is forward of the
prop shaft.

Open circuit voltage of 12.5 indicates a good batery. 13.7 volts would
have been voltage with alternator charging ( nor a few seconds
afterwards ). Need to keep an eye on why the electrolite levels are

Subject: [MBZ] Warning on Autocraft Titanium A battery from Advance Auto

WARNING! If you buy an Autocraft Titanium battery be sure and check the

cells electrolyte levels before installing.
I stopped in an Advance Auto store to buy ATF on a Sunday evening about
two
months ago. The car wouldn't start when I left so I bought one of their

Titanium A batteries. Saturday I serviced the car and checked the
electrolyte levels in the battery. Two cells were dry and it required
two
to three ounces of distilled water to bring them up to the correct
level.
The other cells sp.gr. was in the red zone 11.50-11.75.
After driving two days, the two cells I had added water to were still in
the
red zone but the other cells had come up almost to normal. I suspect
these
two cells were damaged by driving it two months with very low
electrolyte.

No one at Advanced Auto had ever heard of checking the sp.gr. or had any

knowledge of what it meant, and they refused to give me a new battery.

I checked the voltage when I serviced the car on Saturday and it was
13.7
volts. I checked it today and it was only 12.5 volts. I'm wondering if
the
battery might be drawing too much current and might have damaged the
diodes
in the alternator?

After much chiseling, and some tracing, I think I found
the genesis of this generator's general grunge. (Hey,
_you_ try to find a 'g' word that's better!)

The small diode bridge has every diode blown, shorted,
and its feed trace gone too. Perhaps it's the shorted
'protective' MOV on its output?

Of course, now it has other problems! Me and my chisel...

Bad design. If you're going to use a MOV, a wear

fuse the circuit too.

[MBZ] W123 wagon in new comedy movie

2007-09-25 Thread Zoltan Finks
Just saw a movie preview on TV tonight. It stars that guy from "The
Office" and "40 Year Old Virgin" (two things that I have successfully
avoided seeing).

We had the sound muted, but they focused in on a close shot of a TE or
TD for such a period of time that it looked like the scene was calling
attention to the car. Then they showed the car a couple other times in
the preview.

The premise of the movie is something to do with a Dad - probably
portraying him as out of touch and lame but with a good heart. (how
novel)

The wagon is that factory orange color.

[MBZ] What constitutes harmful overheating? 87 190D

2007-09-25 Thread Zoltan Finks
I must say that I am very thankful that this breakdown has been on par
with about every one I have ever had in terms of fortuitousness.

I looked down and noticed several of the dummy lights glowing. I then
saw the engine temperature rising shockingly fast.

I threw it in neutral and shut it off as I coasted at around 45 - 50
mph down a long hill. Then started it again to get up a hill, and
watched the temp approach the 120 mark and the little red mark.

I may have been unwise, but I wanted to get it off the highway and to
a safe place.

By the time I shut the thing off and rolled to a stop, the gauge was
just about touching that top temp reading (120, right?). But I did not
let it run for any length of time at that temp.

So how bad is what I've done? I mean really, not idealistically.

I know that these engines are at least somewhat prone to head gasket
failures, aren't they? But I would imagine that like any engine, it
can take being badly overheated several times throughout its life.

If you definitely hear the starter turning something over, and
not just the unloaded electric motor sound of an uncoupled
starter, then something is broken. Possibly something very
bad. Ring gear sheared off the flywheel/TC? Broken flex
plate? Broken crank? Broken timing chain? Broken key in
front damper/pulley? No shortcuts here, you're going to
have to have somebody who knows look at it.

You can jump the starter from inside the engine compartment,
I suggest you do that while looking at the cam through the
oil fill hole. (Or get some help to run the key.)

ernest breakfield <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: hi David!

i would have to agree with most of what you read; key words in your

note that it seems the German standard (EN14214) is the one
companies like VW were looking at when they approved the use of 100%
BioD in their vehicles, but are reportedly only supporting use of RME
(Rapeseed Methyl Esther; BioD made from Rapeseed).

the early recommendations of the NBB i saw for the creation of ASTM
D6751 (the US BioDiesel standard) by the NBB contained requirements at
the formulation level that looked like they had nothing to do with the
performance of the fuel, but were unattainable with anything other than
Soy-Based BioD in a blend that did not exceed 20% BioD/80% petroDiesel.
at a cursory glance, it would appear fuel that might meet ASTM D6751
would not meet EN 14214 based on at least its inferior Cetane and Sulfur
content ratings.

as a user of BioD for several years, i've been hearing for years
that this was going to change and i'd love to hear that this is been
amended to where US regulations now meet the 'standards' the rest of the
world is working with, but if it's happened yet, i've missed it.

Uh ... trust me on this one. Scary race-track-underwear fast. Been there,
and your tax dollars paid for it.

The T-34 is sort of like a 240D. Takes a moment to build up to takeoff
power, but once there look out, it isn't going to slow down even when you
try to do so.

Once you get momentum, it is going to keep going faster and faster and will
turn until you rip the wings off.

Glad to hear you're not too badly hurt, Peter. Be sure and get a recheck if
you have too much pain. I walked around in considerable pain for a week
after the same kind of accident and finally found out the shoulder had a

Re: [MBZ] 126 PS Fluid leak--Help

2007-09-25 Thread rw123
Dan,
I have had several 123 PS pumps leak through the seal around the pulley shaft.
It is easily fixable. Just remove the pulley and pry out the seal and get a new
one from Rusty or your MB dealer. It can be hammered back in with an
appropriate size socket.

One of the concerns is the auto climate control, I believe it works in

Anyway negotiations are in progress and I'll try and organize a proper

[MBZ] Warning on Autocraft Titanium A battery from Advance Auto

2007-09-25 Thread archer
WARNING! If you buy an Autocraft Titanium battery be sure and check the
cells electrolyte levels before installing.
I stopped in an Advance Auto store to buy ATF on a Sunday evening about two
months ago. The car wouldn't start when I left so I bought one of their
Titanium A batteries. Saturday I serviced the car and checked the
electrolyte levels in the battery. Two cells were dry and it required two
to three ounces of distilled water to bring them up to the correct level.
The other cells sp.gr. was in the red zone 11.50-11.75.
After driving two days, the two cells I had added water to were still in the
red zone but the other cells had come up almost to normal. I suspect these
two cells were damaged by driving it two months with very low electrolyte.

No one at Advanced Auto had ever heard of checking the sp.gr. or had any
knowledge of what it meant, and they refused to give me a new battery.

I checked the voltage when I serviced the car on Saturday and it was 13.7
volts. I checked it today and it was only 12.5 volts. I'm wondering if the
battery might be drawing too much current and might have damaged the diodes
in the alternator?

Peter, get the attorney soon. They know how to work this system and
will keep both insurance vultures from screwing you over. Granted
you lose 33% of recovery to them, but it does tend to increase your
chances of being made whole.

Very glad you are well enough to relate this disaster to the list.

This means that Kaleb will soon be coming to your place to haul away the car

But before selling to Kleb, have a mechanic check it out to make sure it

Dingdong in JE Sheckel service van blew at red light on the highway
this morning about 7:30 and totaled my 300D. Hit the front door as I
drove across the highway doing about 60, wasn't watching the road
(duh).

I got away with some glass embedded in my left arm (gotta go have that
dug out in the next day or to, I think) and some very sore ribs.
Didn't break the fountain pens in my front pocket or bend up my reading
glasses.

Dash is completely crushed, had to break out the climate control
pushbutton unit and drive the side back to get the glove box open (my
brother did, I'm not able!) to get my stuff out, like the spare set of
rear pads I've not gotten around to getting installed. A helpful
passerby found some long needlenose pliers (probably off the Sheckel
van) and turned the engine off, it was running about half throttle and
boiling (no radiator cap to keep the pressure off the cracked head).
The keys are about 6" inside the dash now, it's that badly crushed.
Climate control split in half and folded up, center vent crunched, what
a mess.

Front doorpost is pushed in at least 18", tire is lying over at 45
degrees or more (lower control arm not bent much if at all), door is
pushed in at least a foot. Windshield is busted, floor pan is VERY
narrow, console cover is torn up and shoved up 6" or so. I unbuckled
and climbed out the passenger side.

Other than the punch in the ribs I'm fine, got a cut from my exploded
coffee cup that flew out of my carrier bag. Cell phone still works in
spite of being thrown onto the floor under the front seat from my bag
in the right seat, haven't tried the computer yet, but the bag was
still on the front seat where I left it.

I ended up pointing straight south rolling down the median from going
straight east, no skid marks other than my tires going sideways, I
don't think he ever touched the brakes. Other driver was fine, airbags
went off, so that's good (although I'm NOT pleased at my car being
wiped). Not a good feeling to look up and see a vehicle speeding
toward you less than 6 ft away and thinking, oh s this is gonna be
bad.

Didn't even black out, didn't hit my head, didn't bang my hip, knee, or
feet.

I feel much better about my mother driving a 300 TE, as much of a pain
as it has been keeping it running nicely (idle and AC problems, finally
fixed). At least if she gets slammed she is unlikely to be hurt.

What a car! Now I gotta find another one..

Peter

I suspect the employer of this driver is sweating buckets about just
what the insurance folks are going to do to him. Rather large
settlement to cover your medical needs and other issues. Best to be
handled by your attorney though. Seems to work really well to just
pass the insurance dork to your attorney, since you have suffered
severe trauma and can not be expected to make decisions without legal
counsel. Have your significant other call and arrange the attorney,
since, again, you are not really able to make these choices unaided.

[MBZ] 1987 300D turbo dies on way home...

2007-09-25 Thread RICHARD FIne
Hello,
Thanks for the previous responses to my post..

My question:

As posted earlier, my wife drove my car home, she said it ran out of power
and she slowly came to a stop at the side of the freeway.

After getting the car towed home, I charged the battery, then tried turning
engine over...

The engine turns over much quicker I then marked the serpentine belt to
see if it would change position when engine (or starter) was engaged the
belt did not move...

Does this mean that the drive chain (the chain below the timing chain) is
broke? I would find it quite coincidental that the starter would go out at
the same time, and, it is not the same as the noise the starter makes when
it does not engage the flywheel... I believe the starter is engaging the
flywheel, but, that it does not have alot of resistance...

If this is the case, is this a big job (engine removal) or is worth fixing?

Thanks,

Rick

Glad you are in better shape than the Benz. I search many cities in the midwest

told in an advanced motorcycle riders course that green lights are merely
suggestions. I guess this proves that point.

I survived a back spasm w/o drugs last week. First couple of nights it
kept waking me up though.
In my own personal horrific crash, I ripped some muscles in my neck.
Didn't take the meds, woke up the first night in excruciating pain,
crawled backwards down the stairs to get my codeine off the kitchen
table. 2nd night took a pill before I went to bed. If I ever again
decide to go to sleep without taking prescribed opiates, I'll have
the drug and water next to my bed.

Might want to read some of the threads in the archives about dealing
with insurance companies. I've always felt I've gotten more than fair
treatment for collision damage, thankfully I've never been involved in
an injury claim I'm sure that takes things to another level since the
$$ can be orders of magnitude higher.

I ALWAYS check at that interseciton, there have been several fatals
there. However, there was a car in front of me turning left, and there
wasn't anything coming when I looked, he was so far back. Musta been
arguing with his wife on the cell phone, or fishing his donut up off

I'm glad he didn't hit the BMW M3 in front of me, that would have

Must have been quite the bang when the van hit you! Wonder if he was on his
cell phone? Hope someone collected the
names of some witnesses at the scene. Once he gets over the initial shock, he

Sorry to hear about the car and your ribs. Hope you heal quickly.

Sorry to hear about your accident. It may be several days before your
body feels the full impact of the trauma. Take it easy for a while. If
you normally exercise, take a break.
If they do give you pain pills of any sort, remember that they all
tend to slow down your gut. Especially the opiates. You may find it
advantageous to start taking a quadruple dose of the laxative of your
choice before you need it. I don't mean to get too personal, but wish
someone had told me before I found out the hard way - so to speak...

Three things:

Real glad your'e doing so well!

Glad the MB proved to be good like they say.

Sad, but one literally needs to try to confirm that cross traffic is
going to actually stop before one enters the intersection. This
practice of red light running seems to be worsening in my estimation.
I hate driving, and I hate drivers.

Again, glad you were kept as safe as you were. Feel better soon!

You of course are consulting a person in the legal profession as well as
specialist physicians -- those car crash injuries can require
considerable convalescence and the total effects might not be apparent
for some time. Then of course there is loss of conjugal pleasure while
the injuries mend, pain and suffering, post-crash psychological trauma,
rehab, and so on. The car was in wonderful condition, you would be
afraid to drive anything less than a Benz (see psych trauma above)

Glad you are well (as can be). This is heartening news for me in some
ways -- though your experience pains me, and you are indeed lucky you
were in such a fine automobile -- both my kids are now driving Benzes,
it makes me feel good they are out in the world in them.

[MBZ] 87 300D did it's job, RIP

2007-09-25 Thread Peter Frederick

Re: [MBZ] Odd rear diff cover?

2007-09-25 Thread Rich Thomas
I understand those aspects, but it is still curious to me why the diff
cover and diff housing are different profiles. Perhaps the diff is a
"universal" design and the covers/mounts are the variable part, or maybe
the other way around.

2007-09-25 Thread Tom Hargrave
It's not a mis-match, it's designed that way. The differential is tied
to the driveline. The rear cover is also the differential mount, which
is tied to the body. You can have several differential / cover
match-ups.

What I really need is a white-on-gray '87 300D (or 300E if it's cheap

[MBZ] 126 PS Fluid leak--Help

2007-09-25 Thread Dan Weeks
Folks:

My '82 300SD is dripping a bit of PS fluid. It seems to be coming
from the bottom of the PS pump. lines appear OK. I know it's from
there, not the trans, as the PS reservoir level drops along with the
leak. At first is was pretty bad--fair-sized stain under the car. Now
the stains are smaller, and PS fluid consumption has gone down, but
it's still there. I was hoping it was a leaking line, but doesn't
appear to be, and the unions appear tight and dry. What's the
prognosis/cure/cost? Car has 194k on it. PS works fine, groans a
little if I let the fluid get too low, but that only happened twice
and was promptly corrected. Fluid (Dextron III) is clean and clear,
was recently changed, with a new PS filter installed.

Thanks in advance!

2007-09-25 Thread V Layton

Well I'd say all those are fair comments, I admit I was lazy with the cap
lock thing, and as far as spelling, well I couldn't proofread it even one
more time without my eyes crossing, it is too long to work it out and as it
was it was late at night and I just couldn't put it off another day. I
don't think the spelling errors per capita are so bad

I'll be very surprised if it sells, too, but like I said, what the hell.
Might be worth the publicity stunt...will be interesting to watch.

I don't see how. Once the clutch is engaged the entire
thing is a solid rotating mass. Unless it's slipping.

Re: [MBZ] OT: 5kW Chinese Genset

2007-09-25 Thread Jim Cathey
With only a little prying with a pair of screwdrivers, and 'biting' at
it with some pliers, I was able to completely expose the bottom of the
regulator's PCB. Big chunks of the potting material peeled up. Some
of the solder mask came up with it, but otherwise no harm that I could
tell. There is what looks to be a blown trace over at the excitation
winding input area, I couldn't find any trace of the missing copper
stuck to the removed potting material. That'd do it! I'll need to
figure out why it blew, however. The potting material is somewhat
brittle and can probably be chipped away with patience. Even without
exposing the component side I should be able to do at least some
circuit tracing.

If it's a hard knock at some speeds but goes away under load then the
issue could be the flex plate that is between the flywheel & torque
converter.

Having replaced the engine and gearbox mounts ( one mount was faulty -
oil leaking out of it ) the vibration/resonance is still there. Could
this be due a faulty clutch plate ? Where the torsional springs
resonate?

I'm at a loss to find the cause of the annoying resonance! PEter

My New W124 300D non turbo exhibits strong vibration from idle to 1600
rpm when engine is slightly loaded. Does not do this when out of gear
and you rev vehicle . It is rpm related and not road speed related . It
sounds a bit like an engine is labouring . Is this normal? ( BTW my
OM617's don't do this ) What could cause this ? What I could come up
with is possibly a loose front vibration damper? PEter
