Biodiesel has more oxygen in it than petro diesel. BioD has about 20% less
energy (depends on the base stock) than PetroD. Blends from B20-B70 will
usually see more fuel efficiency than pure PetroD or B100 due to the more
complete combustion of the fuel blend. Higher than B70 will usually see less
fuel economy.

It usually takes two people, but you should take a voltmeter and

battery + and the starter motor's center post (not the cable or
the nut) and have somebody hit the starter. You don't want to
see very much voltage at all. Repeat the test with the battery

Any significant voltage means you have a wiring problem.
A volt is too much. Half a volt is probably too much.

You combine these results with the battery voltage itself
(measured between the posts) under the same conditions.
It shouldn't drop too much, if it goes to 10V it's bad.

Tim, my 300CD is nearing 10kmi on BioD. I've not seen a clogged filter yet

One repair was made last wee, because of a clogged vent the tank had
imploded even to the point of crushing the fuel sending unit. A new tank
wasn't feasible but for 1/3 the cost a tank was pulled which had actually
been running bio. While in the process, that tank was pressure cleaned and I
had fuel lines replaced (with intent maybe of using bio anyway). Yep, it's
all clean! It cost me $60. just to see that fuel gauge register full.
Prior to that I had about 8ga. capacity in tank and couldn't figure why I
 kept running out of fuel.

I'm so proud of the nice clean fuel system that I might just keep bio in
this vehicle. The other 300Ds I have still have the old fuel lines but I'm
tempted to give them an occasional tank of bio and watch the filters.

As far as my original intention of building a reactor and converting my
supply of veggie oil? I'm actually turning that into soap as I've got a
market. My 'indie friend likes the lye soap and I keep him in a supply.
It's actually great to cut grease. (Anyone wanna try some msg me and I'll
send ya a bar. That's not a sales pitch, just a friendly offer of gift!

yes, Ohms = Volts / Amps, Amps = Volts/Ohms, Volts = Ohms/Amps

You need to measure the resistance of the cable, then measure the
voltage difference from the same points when current is flowing.

Ya know, there's a fully restored King Midget for sale up here in the
great lakes region. That would be just the ticket for his short commute.
When they refurbed it they stuck in a modern OHC Honda engine (20 HP).
The bad news is that the asking price is several times the price of a new
Midget 40 years ago, so it's probably out of Wonko's budget.

Subject: [MBZ] W108 SEL 4.5 update and random thoughts

 Gang,

Just wanted to update everyone about the W108 280SEL 4.5 (aka der blaue
Engel) that I acquired in the autumn.

The car has been enjoying a few weeks of spa treatment at Mercedes
Werkstatt in Mountain View, CA. Aside from the core business of refurb'ing
MB transmissions, steering and related systems, they also do service work.
Paul Prokopec is the proprietor. We got off to a bit of a rough start and
he can seem quite gruff (especially on the phone) but he's quite OK once
you get to know him. He certainly seems to know his stuff, and handles a
lot of machines that are getting rare (Pontons, fintails, and a couple of
6.3s that he takes care of along with a 600 and lots of more typical
 W123/W126 etc).

I wasn't actually looking for a car that needed work etc, but I lost my
head when I saw this car and bought it without regard to practicality. As
I reported when I first got the car, there were a number of steering and
suspension issues that seemed potentially grave. Luckily things have
 worked out rather well.

Just as Peter Fredericks predicted, the rumble/vibration that I feared
might be a drive shaft problem turned out to be simply a bad transmission
mount. I had it replaced along with the two engine mounts. The driver's
side manifold had a very severe crack which actually caused the piece to
disintegrate when removed from the car. The original W108 4.5 manifold has
been superceded with the one used on the 450SLC, so that was installed. I
also had the leaky steering box rebuilt and the relevant rubber replaced
in the steering column, front subframe mounts, a tie rod and new tires all
 around.

I inspected the car while it was on the lift. I still can't believe that a
35 year old car can be in such amazing condition; there is simply no
corrosion underneath this thing. Even nuts and bolts that hold things like
brake/fuel lines etc look like they are only a couple of years old. The
car spent most of its life in Modesto CA, where apparently it never rains!

My initial panic after discovering how different the W108 is from the
models that followed it has subsided. It really is the last of an era,
requiring very real and regular maintenance that later cars do not.
Another reminder that it really is a classic, I suppose. One thing I have
noticed is that the MB service manuals (on CD) are rather sparse compared
with the information available for later models.

After several months here in CA, I'm only gradually getting used to the
ridiculous number of old MBs running around, especially W123 diesels. I
see LOTS every single day, not one of them showing the least sign of
corrosion or decay. It's time to start collecting my lifetime supply!

 D.

Re: [MBZ] Knock on wood... 300D

2007-12-16 Thread Peter Frederick
Well, what's most environmentally friendly is to GET OUT OF THE CAR and
walk (or ride public transit). However, this notion is still political
suicide in the US (and Germany), where driving anywhere you want at any
time you want is conflated with political freedom. They aren't the
same thing, after all, you are quite free to believe what you want and
express yourself (within the law) while riding the bus to work.

I spend about $200 a month (and rising at the moment) for fuel to drive
to work. I'm quite certain that walking up the road a couple miles to
town and catching a bus down to work (especially over to the next town
where I'm contracted three days a week) would cost somewhat less. To
say nothing of not having to spend two hours a day driving -- I could
read, do computer work, or etc. on the bus, rather than staring at the
road and dodging people trying to kill me (either I'm getting twitching
after that accident or people are paying LESS attention that usual
while driving -- don't go a day anymore without at least one vehicle
drifting over the center line toward me, correcting at the last second,
or someone taking off out of turn at a stop sign).

I'd weigh a lot less and probably wouldn't have high blood pressure if
I walked!

Re: [MBZ] generator

2007-12-16 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Yes, it does have a 240V outlet, which is a round 4 prong plug but
smaller than a drier plug. Is this what I would need to tie it into the
house somehow?

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetailproductId=16634-171-1493lpage=none

How would I tie it into the panel as you said?

Timothy Robinson wrote:
Technically, there is. :) As a licensed guy here, I usually cringe when I
hear people talk of back-feeding through the dryer outlet, etc.. At least
you have the sense though to know why to trip the main breaker.

 I'm assuming the 4KW generator has a 20AMP 120/240 outlet? Usually on
electric dryer the motor is on one leg (120V) and heat is 240V. (Some dryer
the motor is 240V). I think typical heat element is about 1,800W @ 240V.

If your generator doesn't have a 120/240 output you're out of luck on the
 dryer.

You could tie an output from ground and neutral into panel and backfeed a
double pole breaker in the panel MAKING SURE TO TURN MAIN BREAKER OFF so you
don't electricute some poor lineman! That would energise the panel. As a
precaution you should turn off breakers such as range, water heater, HVAC

I have this 4k generator running now which will run about anything I
need, have it hooked up via extension cords. Will be needing to do
laundry soon and it will run the washer I am sure but cant see anyway to
hook the electric drier up to it. Anyway of hooking it into the house
power quick and easy and just flipping the main breaker so it doesnt
feed back into the power lines?

 Timothy Robinson wrote:
Most of the belt-driven/direct coupled generator heads I've seen require
3,600 RPM. I'd always heard an advantage of the some diesel gensets was the
slower, 1,800 RPM speed for sound and long term wear and tear.

There are PTO generators which use pto from tractors at 540 RPM input.
They're expensive as they utilize a gearbox to rotate the generator at
 proper speed.

I STILL think the easiest thing is an inverter/deep cell battery charged by
alternator from car. I have this setup and have even used the old Sears
Craftsman mower to charge the battery.

One of my homeowners just called saying he wanted to buy his son a generator
for Christmas. He was asking what size. I'd equipped the boy's house with
a 30AMP 120/240 input from generator. I suggested the guy be sure and buy a
generator w/automatic governor which reacts to additional loads and idles
down as loads are removed. The reason I mention is on that house I saved the
cost of a hardwired transfer switch and use one of the Square D breaker
interlocks on the main panel. It's recognised by NEC for use as service
 interlock/transfer.

Last generator I bought (previous house) was an electric start 7,500W at
Home Depot for about $1,100. I could dry clothes in electric dryer or heat
water in the water heater (4,500W elements). Only thing I couldn't do was
run the resistance heat (15KW) on the heat pump. None of that was really
 necessary though.

As I don't have a well pump (municipal water) and do have a wood stove, an
inverter provides enough for back-up needs.

Sorry for the 'litany' ya'll... I just get into subjects like this.

 What
all would be involved I wonder. Just get a gen head and hook it up via
belt or something? What about some sort of control panel?
It can be fairly simple, but you do need RPM control. Harbor Freight
 has a cheapie 10kW belt-drive 3600 RPM head on sale periodically. It's
not very good, not when compared to the heavy duty 1800 RPM ST heads
that folks use for the purpose, but maybe it'd be good enough? It's
got built-in everything, including some meters and outlets, and has
the VR already set up. Just add torque!

Correct... if the element is 5000W a 4K generator isn't gonna provide enough
power. If the wattage on the element is only nom. 3,000 plus the load of the
motor, about 1/3 hp.. it could be done.

Yep, standard branch circuit for a dryer is 30A @ 240V and 4K generator is
only putting out 16A. So someone would have really screamed if I'd said you

Kinda a catch-22. If you spend the money for a decent clamp-on DC
ammeter, you have acquired a device that is adequate to measure low
ohms. Still, I like DC clamp-on's, but consumer grade ones are flaky.
Adding enough ohms to measure the resistance with a Harbor Freight
multimeter causes it' own problems and in practice is a real PITA...

You can get close enough with a cheap multimeter to diagnose basic
problems - maybe +- 5 amps.

I say, yeah, thats how you strung them together. You need to reverse

but I still need this other kind to hook them up. Uh no I tell her
again, you make something like that and you will fry yourself when you
go to plug it in as the electrical power will now be exposed, and it

Priapus was a guardian of gardens. If a boy dared to steal from a garden
that Priapus was guarding, he was, according to legend, in for a royal
buggering. Kind of like what you get if you pay $30k for a compact Toyota,
or worse yet, $20k for a three or four year used old compact Toyota.

If you contract out the land, pick something other than soy!!

Peanuts, rape, cotton, palm, etc all make better base stock than
 soy.

But...but...the government subsidizes soy biodiesel, and they wouldn't
do that if it wasn't the best use of resources, would they? g

Seriously, I believe yield per acre is under 40bu, and I recently saw an
ad for a two stage heated press that claimed to extract over 1.1
gallon per bushel, so soy oil yield is going to be somewhere below 50
gallons per acre, and we all know that soy oil is not the preferred
feed stock. The fun part of renting the land out on shares is going
to be finding somebody who wants to farm the oilseed that you want,
and finding a way to get the oil out of the seed if you want to make
biodiesel with your 1/4th of the crop.

In theory, you could do it with 100 acres and a $10k investment in your
own oil press if you want to go with soy, which should be easy to find
a farmer to partner with. Or you could just buy the press, and 1,000 bu
of beans, and sell the leftover high protein soy meal for about what you
paid for the beans.

Re: [MBZ] generator

2007-12-16 Thread OK Don
Way back when I was kid in Civil Air Patrol, we had a surplus
transceiver (BC-669?) that had a female socket for the power input -
it came with a male-male cord to supply the 115V. I always treated it
with respect, plugged it into the power supply first, then into the
wall. I also wondered what bright engineer came up with that design.

NOBODY makes/sells what you need to mis-use a drier outlet
as a power input point. My nickname for those such cables
I have (which I have made myself) is Pins-O-Death. I hope
that gives you an idea of what they look like. Male pins
on both ends. Very dangerous unless you are very cautious
about exactly how you use it.

Since it's a gasser, and doesn't get good mileage, I haven't paid any
attention. This is what the add says:

work, does not have reverse.
Way Below Blue Bk $1300

Guess I made the assumption that it's a gasser - or maybe it said 300E

[MBZ] Portable Garages

2007-12-16 Thread Frederick W Moir
Hi, Alles.
Ole Man Winter did it to my HF Portable garage today. Down over the
top of my 300TD. I had just finished with the driveway next door and
mine and had put away the snow blower in the shed, locked up and
turned around, and thought aah s**t!. Much careful shovelling to
free the cover from the very bent frame, then took apart the frame
and peeled that crap off my car. Y'know, someone up there likes me,
no damage! Now all that is needed is a car cover until spring. Dodged
the bullet, this time. 8 plus inches of wet snow and then rain, was
too much for it.

The guy must have reposted/edited the ad since it now says $800. It did say
that the body was in good shape, but hidden rust would definitely be a
problem where you are in RI. I remember many stories my dad told of rusty
cars in Chicago where he grew up. Some good ones include a friend's car
who's rear doors wouldn't open. Since the supporting structure was rotted
away, and the doors were binding and keeping the car from collapsing. He
told me about many times he's seen springs popping through fenders/hoods,
and another one of his friends had a car bust in half while being towed on a
tow truck. The tin worm is nothing to take lightly.

I kinda think the cost of replacing those hybrid batteries which will have
to be done about the time the warranty expires is a greater cost than what I
paid for the four 300Ds.

Let's see... the vehicle tax is due at the end of the month. Mine is $9.24
compared to brother's prime vehicle which is $238.00. I have no payment nor
interest yet I believe brother's payment for three months would be equal to
what I paid for each vehicle. Oh, and as my insurance is $247.00 for six
months, the brother's is over $1,600. each six. hmmm

No tree hugging here. But I do shake my head often at what I see around
 me.
Maybe folks don't have to give up their Suburban or big 4x4 - I mean
that's not going to happen. (heck, even here in the socialist state of
Washington, I see more full sized 4x4s and SUVs than efficient cars -
this has been a surprise to me) But maybe people could, once a week,
forego driving. And maybe they could wake up and not mash the accelerator
by default every time they take off.
Okay, slipped into rant mode there.
I have taken a much closer look lately, though, at what is sold to us as
environmentally friendly. I hear the deeper issues surrounding bio and
ethanol and hybrids, and I just revert to my belief that just a few little
behavior mods are the real key.
Oh, and someone mentioned that their 123s were keep-forever cars. I feel
that way too! But just last night my wife reiterated her stance that we
should drive these cars 'til they go belly up and then we should move on to
something else. Well, actually, she did say that we should hang onto the
240D. I argue that these are classics (I even feel that way about our 190D)
and nothing is going to come along that is going to be better in any true
sense. I say let's just rebuild the engine or tranny when they go. Heck
isn't that more enviro. friendly compared to contributing to the manufacture
 of new cars?

The other day I was in Lowes getting something in the electrical aisle.
This woman says to me, You look like you know what you are doing.
(Disclaimer -- she was older and not very attractive, to me anyway) I
say, Well maybe! She then says she is looking for an extension cord
to plug into her outdoor Christmas lights that has prongs on it, to fit
into something like this which was a female end of an extension cord.
So I asked her why she needed that. She says, well the light strings
have these kinds of plugs on the end and I need to hook them up to the
power. So I tell her that the other end of the string has one of these
on it, showing her the male end of the ext cord. She says, It does?
I say, yeah, thats how you strung them together. You need to reverse
the string, or plug them in at the other end. Oh she says maybe so,
but I still need this other kind to hook them up. Uh no I tell her
again, you make something like that and you will fry yourself when you
go to plug it in as the electrical power will now be exposed, and it
will get wet and make everything around it electrified so your dog and
mailman and anything else will get fried too. oh she says again,
unconvinced, and keeps looking while I go off.

 Free advice, worth every penny!

Re: [MBZ] People are stupid

2007-12-16 Thread Curt Raymond

I had a doorhandle for a GMC sell on eBay for like $0.87. I shipped it to the
wrong address, whoops. Unfortunately the jackass doesn't ship it back.
So I gotta refund the money, well this all goes down while I'm on vacation. I
get back, give him his refund and then he gives me negative feedback in which
he calls me unprofessional.
Apparently he doesn't realize that selling on eBay is obviously not my
profession.
So he gets a negative feedback over the time it takes me to send him $0.87.

So I have this guy who is needing a refund but it hit the fan so to
speak before I could get it done (no power and all). This is big news
all over the country. So while the power is out the guy sends several
emails a day wondering where his refund his. So I got gen power and
 got
mail yesterday and sent the guy his refund and told him I was sorry he
had to wait a few days but he must not have noticed on the news that
 the
whole state of OK just about is out of power. Never responded with a
thanks for the refund or anything. Geez.

Re: [MBZ] Knock on wood... 300D

2007-12-16 Thread Timothy Robinson
I love rants. Allow me to continue!

I lived downtown for 16 years. I left the vehicle parked and walked
everywhere I needed to go. The exercise was great. From the days of marching
the military 6 to 5 (six strides = five yards), my pace of about 96 bpm
(beats per minute... imagine a Sousa march = 120 bpm) covers about 80 yards
per minute. That's just under 3MPH. Great exercise cardio thing. I still
took the bus sometimes but only around downtown in the free zone. Why stand
at a bus stop for the hourly bus to spend $.60 when an hour's walk you'd be
there anyway?

This summer I took a six month contract in the mountains doing a job I used
to do twenty-five years ago. I was younger then. Before signing the contract
I walked the length of the valley each evening (seven miles) for two weeks
just to imagine I was in near the physical condition as I was when I was 24
y/o. (NOT) Still, it was a great training and it adjusted me to the
altitude. (We're talking about 4,400 ft. above sea and the mountain top
where I worked just under a mile.) Weeks into the contract I had lost some
added pounds, my blood pressure and general well-being was greatly improved.

And this IMHO is the true key to making any real difference - just a little
change or two in the behaviors of us all.

This evening I visited some friends. They had gas logs in three fireplaces
in their home. They enjoy the warmth of the hearth yet they had the air
conditioning running so the house didn't get too hot. I just noted the
excess as they discarded food in preparation that I would have made meals
from. Consumer electronics have been discarded as obsolete for the latest
models, the kids are learning these same values, it's only money. dad!
Oh, the fitness center membership for the whole family? How was little
obese Johnny earning his allowance this summer while you paid $75.00 a week
to someone to mow your lawn?

OK... now I am ranting.

No tree hugging here. But I do shake my head often at what I see around me.
Maybe folks don't have to give up their Suburban or big 4x4 - I mean that's
not going to happen. (heck, even here in the socialist state of
Washington, I see more full sized 4x4s and SUVs than efficient cars - this
has been a surprise to me) But maybe people could, once a week, forego
driving. And maybe they could wake up and not mash the accelerator by
default every time they take off.

Re: [MBZ] Somebody needs this '85 CD!

2007-12-16 Thread Timothy Robinson
AW... I gotta have a sedan. Coupes give me a neckache.

Besides, I grew up in the Cadillac Body by Fisher, Enter like a lady era.
No one had coupes because it was difficult for old great aunts to climb ass
in the air into a back seat. Those old great aunts who bought the Lincoln
and Mercury coupes with the long doors? I've seen too many of them park on a
slope at a family picnic and have the door drag them out of the seat when
they opened it.

I had a young salesman once use a pitch that my old Fleetwood was like
riding around in one's living room. (Land yacht they called it.) I didn't
trade on this little coupe he was trying to move. I said, Some of us just
MIGHT LIKE riding around in our living rooms.

Still, I like the lighter doors on sedans as cheap strip malls try to fit
more cars in tighter spaces.

mail yesterday and sent the guy his refund and told him I was sorry he
had to wait a few days but he must not have noticed on the news that the
whole state of OK just about is out of power. Never responded with a

Re: [MBZ] More light in instrument clusters

2007-12-16 Thread Timothy Robinson
I 'caught the indie on another car... Don't charge me $38. for an
instrument potentiometer when I know you just bypassed it!

He replaced instrument panel lamps last week on one of the other cars. I
notice a glow coming from the turn signal indicators now.

I haven't gotten around to it, but there are very few things I won't run
through the dishwasher! Couldn't hurt on the lense. You are right about
those bulbs though! I'm just getting started on instrument panels!

For those of you who have really dim W123 lights, you might want to line
the light pipe and the bulb compartment with aluminum foil. The pictures
attached show the process. The only difficult, fiddly thing is prying off
the light pipe covers without breaking anything. It can be done. As
someone told me about wheel bearings, you have all day to do it.

With these modifications, my W123 instrument cluster lights are more than
 adequately bright.
