The common shaded pole motor runs just fine on triac'ed juice.
But it's much more sensitive than a lamp, so if you go too dim
 it'll stop.

By then the lamp won't be putting out much heat, so the stopped
fan probably won't be a big deal. So I figure anyway...

The point being that it probably
wouldn't be usable on a theatrical lamp.

Since this is a followspot, it doesn't really get dimmed much.
Usually the dimming is more of a soft switch.

Now I just need to find a source for a retaining lamp socket...
and some time.

Re: [MBZ] Near 4 Dollar Diesel Here in Dallas

2008-03-18 Thread MG
George,

If I recall from my reading on a biodiesel list. Someone there said that
the best blend would be right around 20% as that would add the lubricity
that the ULSD now lacks and he had found that he got the best mileage
from that mix. I believe his theory was that that much bioD add some
oxygen to the combustion process and so burned the dinoD better. More or
less BioD and he found the mileage was reduced. What he did not specify
was how he got his figures.

If I could get 20% around here I would use it just for the lubricity
factor. I don't know how much 5% would improve that but my guess would
be a lot less.

The web site dallasgasprices.com still lists a station in Allen at
3.69, may or may not be the true price. Any way that would be about 20
- 25
mile trip in the wrong direction for me (each way). There are still
some at about 3.82 to 3.89 around town, at leas today. Good luck next
  week.

However right by my house at north Buckner and Northcliff a defunct
small gas station has reopened and is now called something like the green
spot. I bought 5% bio blend there for 3.79 / gallon. Have never used
that before. They also sell some kind of straight bo diesel from an above
ground tank. B99 ?? Do not know what the price is. This in my
experience is a bit unusual for Dallas. I talked with the owner for
about 10
minutes, interesting guy. I wish him luck and hope he can sustain his
business. I think he also sells organic snacks / food. I have never
dabbled in bio before but 5% is just kind of a 'sales gimmick right?

My neighbor's son has a 300TD wagon that he run SVO in. (It has a lot
of extra plumbing on it with the Aussi heater block). I ask to see what
  he thinks of it.

Several years ago A local school district did some testing, and at the
prices of the day, ($1.20 dino, $1.70 bio) B20 gave enough better mileage
than D100 to save money. I believe NOx emissions were lower, so they
presented it as saving the children's health and saving money at

Re: [MBZ] way OT: SCR or triac dimmers

2008-03-18 Thread George Larribeau
It's a triac or SCR-pair solid state dimmer panel controlled via
 DMX.

That is a much more sophisticated system that I considered ...
If the 'fan' will run off of 'Triaced' Juice you might get away with some
sort of calibration procedure. Using a decent meter (I recommend TRU-RMS
like a Fluke 87 or equlivant) hook up the lamp with fan to the triac type
dimmer directly and gradually increase (via DMX) until you get a reading of
about 82V, at the lamp which the fan will need to tolerate. Note the DMX
setting and don't exceed it. ..

Apparently, 730kg for a Fortwo. That's about 250lb less than my first car,
a 1975 1488cc CVCC Hondamatic Civic Hatchback. Mine was about as heavy as
the original Civic chassis got, but even a 1200 4sp sedan would outweigh
a Fortwo. I would have guessed a Smart at over a ton. A Honda 600 (remember
those, pre-Civic, two cylinder, 600cc, four-in-the-dash shifter?) was about
300lb lighter than the Fortwo.

Re: [MBZ] i see 4 buck a gallon diesel,, etc.

2008-03-18 Thread LarryT
I worked as a mechanics apprentice in the late 60s - I worked with a trained
mechanic and we got pretty fast at some jobs - One day we wanted to see how
fast we could change a throw-out bearing. From the time the car rolled onto
the ramp to the time the engine started to drive out again was 8 minutes.
We pulled the engine, replaced the T-O bearing and put the engine back in.

We regularily were pretty fast at doing the X mile services. This
became a problem when a customer saw his car disappear into the garage then
come out again after 10 minutes or so. The customer would think he was not
getting the service his money was paying for so we started to park the cars
in a courtyard behind the shop for 1/2 hour or more before taking the car
back out. This way the mechanic got his extra money for doing the job fast
and the customer was happy.

Not quite true. On the SLs, specifically the 113, a California coupe
will NOT have a soft top. I have never come across a r107 without a

Rusty - My nephew [Rob Ringgold] might be calling from Pulidos in
Jacksonville. I have been telling him you have good prices and know MB's.
He's pricing out some motor mount stabilizers for my 1981 300SD, and does
seem to always have a MB or two in there for repair.

Re: [MBZ] i see 4 buck a gallon diesel,, etc.

2008-03-18 Thread pm7088
A friend was a service writer at a large VW dealership.
Mr. Picky dropped his car off for 300 mile oil change. My friend went out
and noted a piece of kite string tied from bumper to fence.
Oil Changed, car retied to fence.
My Picky comes in and pays bill. Goes to get car and comes back spouting like
a beached whale, he's been defrauded!
My friend shows him a note on bottom of service order: Check Parking Brake,
car needs to be tied up when parked.
Mr. Picky never came back

A while back there was a story in the news. Girl#1 (not on the lam)
is hiding out with boyfriend (who skipped out on probation) in a motel.
Bounty hunters (looking for girl#2, no relation to girl#1) almost get
inside by impersonating police, but they slam the door. Then a bounty
hunter tries to break in through a window.

Boyfriend pulls a gun on him. He runs off and calls the cops, tells
them that a black guy with a gun is holding a white girl hostage.
hostage crisis ends with the cops storming the motel room and
shooting boyfriend in the head. AFAIK, no charges filed against
bounty hunters for impersonating cops or attempted BE of an occupied
dwelling.

Andrew,

A ways back at a GWS Concours Picnic, we had someone show a factory
delivered W113 California Coupe, which caused some consternation
about how to judge the car since there were no top to which points
could be assigned. Owner had brought the window sticker identifying
it with No soft top or words to that effect. Frankly, I don't
remember how it was resolved.

Marketing maybe, but was a nice car. For a climate w/minimal rain!

My Wife got a little concerned when I put my new 1972 220D starter ring
in the oven the flywheel in the freezer.

Then I placed the frozen flywheel on a towel on the kitchen floor
dropped the well done ring right onto the flywheel. Just make sure
you don't put the starter ring on upside down - you only have one chance
to get it right.

The bugs had filters. It was the filter screen at the bottom of the pan.
And you'd be suprised at the stuff they would trap.

Earlier Mercedes diesels (pre 1976) used the same system. They had an
oil screen in the filter housing. The drop in filter was a bypass filter
that only filtered a small percentage of the oil and every bit of the
engine lube oil went through the plastic filter screen.

Good points, and that's what I did, but didn't think to include in my
description. I started with a 30-0-30 amp meter, then moved to the 10
amp magic, it'll measure anything Extech digi meter.

On Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 8:40 PM, Jim Cathey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
However, it occurred to me that I could connect an ammeter across the
switch terminals, and see if there was a current flowing, when there
shouldn't be, and how much, just by flipping the switch.

The correct way to do this is to connect the meter first,
then open the switch. (I'm not saying you didn't do this.)
There are startup loads that get satisfied that way, and you
  read only the steady-state draw.

Next I clipped the ammeter across the shut-off switch,
and still no current. I decided that the alternator was not delivering
electricity to the system, so pulled the alternator.

Just make sure you never disconnect the battery from a running
(and good) system, it needs the battery there to regulate voltage.
The open-the-switch trick works just fine so long as you have
the ammeter connected first, and so long as the current it's
then exposed to doesn't blow its fuse or anything.

The big terminal(s) are B, the power output. You'd obviously
need to beef up the wiring to the power consumer. The little
terminal is D, the (initial) field power terminal. It's what's
connected to the dash lamp, and is the small connector in
the stock triple plug. You just need to hook it up, too. I'd
recommend putting in new, different wire to the big alternator,
that way a smaller alternator could be put back in its place

Re: [MBZ] Bouncy speedo needle and wonky cruise in the 300TE

2008-03-18 Thread Hendrik Fay
Looks like I had a win here, finally got around to stripping the coating
off and doing a bit of soldering.
Big thanks to Jim and others who gave advice, it was spot on.
It took two coatings of paint stripper (I found a citrus based one at my
local paint place) and used a round wire brush mounted in my big drill
at very slow speed. Attached the drill to a workbench and then carefully
went over the board till it was all clean.
I do know how to solder pretty well and managed to get it going first pass.
However to do this I would recommend a good soldering iron and a bit of
soldering experience, someone doing this as their first soldering job
with a cheap iron is asking for trouble.
Good lighting and turning the board to get best access to the solder
joints is also essential, some of the solders are very close together.
I also found some of the tails of the electrical bits where bent over
and a bit long, pays to straighten them out and chop a bit off.

Jim Cathey wrote:
I just want to know how the speedo and hall sensor interact, is it via

 I don't think it's a Hall sensor, I think it's another VR sensor
that's just mounted on the rear of the speedometer (for cable-driven
ones), or a straight electrical tap for electronic speedos. Not
sure what your TE has. 126 is all electrical, 107 switched in
mid production, 201 and 123 are mechanical, not sure where 124
sits in all that. Anything newer and you're talking to the wrong
 guy.

I followed the test procedures as laid out here
http://gdl-online.com/testproc.html and all seemed fine, that is why I
thought it might be the amplifier.

It usually is, but it's nice to be sure before dropping hundreds
on a replacement amplifier! I've had a few bad stalk switches
too. Never a bad servo yet, though poor electrical or mechanical
 connections have been noted.

I soldered some of the connections on
the amp but most of the amp is covered in some sort of anti corrosion
coating which makes soldering impossible just about.
Is there a safe way to remove that stuff without killing the circuit
 board?

Paint stripper. And it's crucial that you do so if you actually
want the thing to work right afterwards. I use a methylene-chloride
free stripper. You also need to be able to solder _well_, all it
takes is one bad connection or solder bridge to keep it from working.
I use a fine wire brush (Dremel) to buff the stripped board, removing
a great deal of oxidation before beginning soldering. It helps.
Even so it often takes more than one pass over the board to get
 it working again.

Big letdown, the seller emailed me saying the car sold last night.
This after I gave him my phone number and asked him to call me if he
had an offer, so I could come out there early and see if I wanted to
 match it. Stupid kid.

Greed generally trumps all else. Sorry you missed it. I drove one once and
it's a truly amazing difference over a V8 automatic w116.

Wow, that is some lot.

If anyone picks up and wants to dispose of some unneeded items, by all means
drop me a line. If I were even remotely close I would be there in a
heartbeat.

Re: [MBZ] OT, mp3 files that display name and album info

2008-03-18 Thread Luther
You'll have to convert it to standard *.wav and then convert it back to *.mp3
w/o the said information.

You know how on some mp3 songs when you play via windows media player,
it will display the title, artist, album etc, even a pic of the album
cover in some cases. I tried renaming the file completely, going into
properties of the file and taking out the info that says artist, etc but
it still shows up when playing the file. Anyway to strip that into out
so it will not display at all no matter what program is used to play the
 file?

More than likely, though I can't say for sure.

We had a discussion not that long ago (well, within the last year at any
rate). I recall Rusty saying that 240Ds were 6 inches and 300Ds were 6.5.

Why would you want to do that? BTW, I would guess that the info is coded
in the file along with the audio.

Re: [MBZ] bundt wheel widths

2008-03-18 Thread jfreezn

my 79 300S had 5 1/2 Bundts when I bought it from the first owner back in 86.
I upgraded to 6 1/2s off a 77 450SL.  I recently pulled a brand new 6 1/2X14
from the trunk of a 82 126 wreck.
