Re: [MBZ] OT, equalizer V bass/treble
An equalizer can be helpful but most audiophiles do not use them. If your system is set up properly there really should be no need for one. If you have a boomy room or flat room then it can help. I'm into stupidly expensive gear and do not use them. With my live sound gear I used one because the rooms were always different but I used a real time auto EQ so it was no problem. Listening to mp3s, the EQ can make a big difference because of rubbish sound from mp3s. If your ear doesn't hear any difference then you don't need to worry. The last thing an audiophile wants is another connection and circuit in the sound chain. Re: [MBZ] OT, equalizer V bass/treble
Kaleb wrote: OK, I assume that a equalizer is better than just bass and treble adjustments. This could be as bad as an oil thread Anyway, it's better only in that there are more. With bass and treble, the entire range of frequencies are typically divided into thirds. The bass knob controls the volume of the bass frequencies. The treble knob controls the volume of the high frequencies. The middle has no direct control. Meaning if you want more mid, turn down the bass and treble and turn up the Volume. *smile* Any tips, pointers, thoughts etc. The most common equalizer is called a graphic. It has a knob or slider for each of the slices the sound has been sliced into. So now you have not just bass and treble - but super-bass, low-bass, bass, upper-bass, lower-mid, mid, upper-mid, lower-treble, treble, upper-treble, super-treble. That would be called an 11-band EQ. I've seen anything from 2-band to 62-band. A more powerful, but less intuitive EQ is called parametric. This is usually not sliders, only knobs. Each band, instead of being stuck on only one frequency like a graphic, has adjustable frequency, adjustable width, and adjustable amount. There aren't very many equalizer hardware boxes that are parametric - but in software it's not uncommon, especially in the pro market. Attached is a graphic that shows the various frequencies, where some musical instruments fit in, what frequency range common radio and telephone use, and where speech sounds fit. There is no right or wrong setting anymore than for the seat in a car. Set it so it's comfortable for you. Small speakers usually are lacking in bass, but because there are physics limitations, just turning up the bass doesn't always help. High frequency is much more easily absorbed. So if you have your speakers behind the curtains, not a lot of high frequency sound will get out. Conversely, bass can readily pass through walls. Human ears are quite sensitive to the midrange, like 500 Hz to 2 kHz. --Philip, with pro audio experience -- next part -- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... [MBZ] E320 error codes
Daughter's E320 (Hotrod) has new error codes: Error code 2 is Oxygen sensor inoperative and 4 is Air injection inoperative. The symptoms is that it apparently is getting harder to start. It does start with the gas pedal depressed. I assume the air pump is not working because the O2 sensor is kaput. Is this the logical/correct diagnosis? Anyone know where the o2 sensor is on an M104? Anyone got a good used sensor? Any special tools/knowledge needed to change this? From what I have seen, it just screws in and has a plug. Seems pretty simple to change an O2 sensor. [MBZ] 1999 (OM606) E300 Glow plugs
Hi guys, I'm having a *fabulous* week. Glow plug replacement on an OM606 engine (ugh)... 2 came right out, 3 fought me, but with lots of PB and even more patience, they came out... The last one... well... we aren't on talking terms right now. Fortunately, it was cylinder 3, so it is pretty much straight access, once the IP lines are pulled (and I need to replace the IP delivery valve seals anyhow...) Does anyone have access to a 2007 or newer WIS ? I need a pdf of AR-15.20-P-4112-01P ... Also, can anyone tell/check whether the tool set 900 589 02 99 00 includes a GP reamer or equivalent? I'd expect it would since it is to extract and repair GP bores... It may be shown well enough in the WIS doc above to tell. I know that getting a proper reamer that gets both the element/tip bore and the body bore isn't a cheap proposition, so that lessens the repair kit impact if it is included. (The cheapies only get the tip bore; the body bore is what gets carboned, due to trash on the seat...) I figure the difference in price between a good GP reamer and the tool kit is worth the security of having the proper jigs and guides to ensure the drill-out goes exactly through the center and does not damage the threads or the seat... Insurance against the fickle finger of fate, unsteady hands, or even having the sun shine on the wrong dog's backside that day... With two OM606 engines, I'm apt to need it again anyhow... Re: [MBZ] New 300SD -- heat
So pull the connector off the mono valve; it should then open. If no heat than, you know the coolant loop is plugged somewhere, probably the mono valve. The rebuild kit for the valve is not expensive ($50 on Rusty's site) but you might want disassemble the valve first to see if it is just clogged (which maybe you can just clean) or if the diaphragm is torn (must be replaced). -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Rich Thomas Sent: Monday, February 02, 2009 07:42 To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] New 300SD -- heat No hot air from any vent at any setting. This was running on starter fluid: http://superturbodiesel.com/std/74-o309d-motoroam-om314-t-206.html#pid2293 She sounded real smooth. This is an A pump, anyone have experience? We put on new filter, pumped all the old diesel out, isolated the engine and ran off a 5 gal jug of diesel. There was one hose on the rear of the engine that broke off and I did not put a hose on and run into the jug. I am now thinking this is where the air was being sucked in but as of yet I can't find its purpose in the FSM. It would have fed off the incoming line from the fuel tank. -Rolf -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [MBZ] E320 error codes
Don't assume anything, test before replacing. Usually O2 sensors don't just go out, they tend to slowly read rich until the signal becomes wonky enough for the ECU to pick up a fault. Hard starting is not normally a sign of O2 trouble, as the sensor does not play a part in starting the car. A rough idle I would say is more of an O2 thing, as the motor hunts for the right mixture. May be there is a fault elsewhere and the O2 can't compensate enough and thus throws up a fault code? Changing an O2 sensor is not that hard but you need a good spanner on it as they can be very tight. You may be able to fit a generic brand O2 but have to solder on the connectors. Perhaps as a quick test you can unplug the sensor and see what happens. If unplugging the sensor improves things, it's a clue that it's part of the problem. I don't know if this is all true for this car however. Re: [MBZ] Alright who did it?
I've been trying to remember more about the incident [it was probably 25 years ago]. They took the sign from a rural road that was used mostly by the folks who lived in the area. While we can attribute that to the lessened chance of being caught and perhaps a thought that it would not be so dangerous, the family that ran the sign was either visiting or took a wrong turn coming out of one of the small towns. At any rate, it was night and they were not locals, and did not know the stop was coming up. Not really any way to safely steal a stop sign. Re: [MBZ] this CDI looks cheap
Once I found a 1975 240D sitting in a field with 4 flat tires, and a bad fuel pump and picked it up for $100. Tires pumped up, and there happened to be a working electric fuel pump in the trunk that I installed! It performed flawlessly on a 1,000 mile roadtrip and then I re-sold it afterwards for $800. That was a cheap Mercedes! It could have got expensive if I had cared that there were rustholes in the body panels, cracks in the tire sidewalls, and bad syncros in the tranny, but I didn't... and it didn't. Well now they dont like that generous offer and now decided to see if I can check with the next highest bidder to see if they want it. I explained I could but I would have to file non-payment. Ebay has really screwed the sellers. I can file non-payment but it wont really mean munch if negative feedback cant be left for them. No way to enforce anything. They have been on ebay for a long time and have 100% positive. But, like it said, its not possible to received any negative at all unless you are a seller so a buyer could go around bidding on cars and never pay and still have 100% feedback. Anybody see the problem with that. Anyway, I guess I will start going down the line and sending 2nd chance offers. It just burns me up when people waist time like this. Guy had it for 10 yr, bought it from a guy who had it for 1 yr and did not like a diesel, original owner had it for 14 yr. PO put in a new windshield on Friday as it caught a rock and cracked last week -- inshooance paid that. Car was new in Dunwoody GA in Feb 84 (almost exactly 25 yr ago!). PO gave me 2 envelopes with papers, EVERY repair/purchase/anything car-related paper was in there along with original sticker and purchase receipts. The original owner gave it to his daughter at some point but took care of maintenance, and summarized every event/cost on a set of index cards. (how anal is that?) Dealer mostly and some indy service for the first 14 yr, new tranny at 138k because it was shifting hard. PO had all the vac elements for the AC replaced a year or so ago, was converted to 134 at some point with all new compressor and other stuff, I guess done correctly maybe, we'll see. I have not added up all the costs but it probably is close to half or more of original cost (they beat the dealer down $1600 for a nice round price, tax, title $40,000 out the door in 1984). The 2nd owner put a $800 radio in it in 1998, then 6 months later another $900 Alpine CD unit which is still in the car, with a kicker and amp in the trunk. I am still trying to figure that. That smell is hydrogen sulfide, or some kind of sulfurous oxide, which probably means the catalyst is not working quite as it should, or maybe the mixture, or maybe you got some gas with a lot of sulfur in it? I used to notice that Fords seemed to have a more noxious exhaust odor than other cars, maybe some different kind of catalyst back then. It probably isn't worth worrying about it much, unless the car starts running rough or lacks power. --R Loren Faeth wrote: Haul it up here and pay me $500, and I will cure your problems by taking it off your hands! Ivory with Palomino leather, quite good condition with a few not too critical issues (except the heat didn't come on -- monovalve? which had been replaced at some point in the past), about 300k miles. [MBZ] the 190D sale update
Well I guess I scared the bidder into sending the deposit (via paypal). They are talking about picking it up on the 14th. Before I left for work this morning, I went ahead and sent the 2nd highest bidder a 2nd chance offer. They are jumping at the chance. CRAP!! OK, so here we got the high bidder at 2550 whining and I agree to take 2250. The next highest bidder came in at 2500 and they want it, but I have a deposit already. I am still not convinced these people will come thru, after all if they could just complain and get paypal to refund them and I am screwed. So what is my plan? I ask the 2nd bidder if he would be interested in me asking the 1st bidder if they want to back out because this 2nd guy was wanting to come tonight to get it. I am hoping he wants me to try that because I will get the car gone quicker, and I will get more cash out of him. Guess if all else fails,I will offer to sell him the 2nd 190D I just put the tranny in.
