Re: [MBZ] WTB 420 SEL camshaft

2009-02-17 Thread Eric Thompson

hi guys,

thanks for the replies...yeah i was looking for a "good" used
camshaft...this 420 SEL has about 350,000 miles on it but the
compression is still excellent...i am also replacing the chain and
guides while i am in there...i am not really sure what happened to the
cam ( i took off the oiler tube and it was clean as a whistle
inside)...the #3 intake valve cam lobe is chewed up pretty bad; there's
a big gash on it (must have came from a piece of metal) but it's pretty
deformed toohaven't had a chance to check the hydraulic compensator
yet (a buddy is supposed to make me a "go-no go" tool)...i am guessing a
bad compensator could have caused the deformation.thanks again for
the replies

Eric

Re: [MBZ] E coupe

2009-02-17 Thread E M
2009/2/17 Hendrik & Fay

They'll all be old one day. ;-) I'm always looking at the new stuff and
thinking 5-10 years down the road, when I can affort it.

I was clearing out a bunch of old car mags, and I found the sales brochures
to the W126 and W140, which I picked up when they were new. I have two or
three years of the W140 booklets. When I say booklet, the early sales
material was more like a phonebook!!! I also came across an old AMG sales
catalog, back before they were bought out by Mercedes. Some pictures of
W123, W126s, and even a W123 wagon, fully decked out. Pretty cool stuff,
back in the days of the Hammer. ;-) Found a couple of old RUF parts lists
too for all you Porsche fans. Great stuff. Anyone need the price of CTR
fenders? lol

Ed

If you resurface the valves, maybe - depending on how leaky the valves are.
Should be no problem with a cam.

Larry,

I put them on my '92 and haven't had any issues with inspection, and PA is
somewhat more difficult compared to VA. When in Charlottesville I saw a
few W124s with euros.

[MBZ] Latest Letter from Chrysler

2009-02-17 Thread Tom Hargrave
 adequate financing capacity
through March or April of this year. However, this is not a long-term
solution. Because of the continued lack of credit market liquidity, Chrysler
Financial submitted several follow-on proposals for a long-term solution to
ensure its continued financing capacity. We support the resolution of these
proposals, as adequate retail and wholesale financing capacity for Chrysler
Financial is critical to our viability.

We are looking forward to working with the President’s designee and the
Presidential Task Force on Autos as they review our submission. As stated,
our plans are based on a conservative estimate of economic trends, continued
aggressive restructuring activities, a commitment to substantially improve
fuel economy and a clear vision to reinvent our business model. (To view
either a summary or the complete text of the viability plan submitted today,
HYPERLINK "http://scoop.chrysler.com/2009/02/17/viability-plan/"click here.)

We believe that Chrysler can be viable and play a vital role in supporting
the recovery of the U.S. economy while preserving American jobs. We further
believe that our continued orderly restructuring, together with the
completion of our stand-alone viability plan, enhanced by a strategic
alliance with Fiat, is the best option for Chrysler LLC, our employees, our
unions, dealers, suppliers, customers and the U.S. taxpayers. Our viability
plan demonstrates that Chrysler LLC will repay the U.S. government loans in
full, with a premium beginning in 2012.

I continue to be impressed and grateful for the continued enthusiasm of our
Chrysler team. I know we have the right mix of talent and dedication to
succeed and return to profitability if we receive the assistance we need to
weather this unprecedented industry downturn. Thank you in advance for your
continued focus and support.

Bob

Thanks,

Tom Hargrave

Re: [MBZ] European Headlights

2009-02-17 Thread LarryT
Thx TE. The Porsche 911 owners manual explains how to align headlights
using a flat surface and some tape ;-)

As far as DOT - I had some lights in a car that a PO had installed some kind
of "high intensity" blue lights - the state inspector said without the
alignment nubs he wouldn't pass it. Likely another inspector would have
checked to see if they worked and went on but this guy caught it.

Perhaps the Euro lights won't look so odd?

Thx agn -

Inspection shouldn't be a problem. All they look for is to see if they
work,
not DOT markings on the glass. Aiming will have to be done manually, but
the

directions in WIS or on Daniel Stern's lighting page should suffice. (not

Howdy -
I am considering Euro headlights for my 91 300D - but I worry about them
not

having the DOT alignment bumps for the US alignent machines. I'm sure I
can

align the lights the old fashioned way - a flat wall, some tape and a
darkened garage. But I worry about passing the state inspections.

Anyone know?

Re: [MBZ] filter

2009-02-17 Thread R A Bennell
And, that is not the worst of it. The real pain is that it is somewhat
difficult to get back on correctly. It is
easy enough to get it cocked a bit and bend the edge of the housing a little.
Don't ask how I know that. I'd like
to run it up on the ramps so that I had more room to work under there but then
fear it might not drain totally. The
sump at the front cannot hold all of the oil and so some must be at the back of
the pan. I will drive it up and try
draining it next time to see how much comes out. If the angle is not too bad,
the rest may drain into the sump and
that would be fine. Would make it much easier to get the filter housing on
correctly if I could get far enough
under to see what I was trying to do. Not much room in that general area to
begin with. MB must have assumed that
the oil would generally be changed at the dealer, on a hoist.

The housing is accessed from underneath & at an angle. And when you undo the
center bolt, oil runs down the housing, coating it and your hand / arm.

Re: [MBZ] WTB: Passenger side camshaft 86 420 SEL

2009-02-17 Thread Tom Hargrave
This is probably a better solution unless he can pull the cam & rockers
himself to absolutely guarantee that the rockers stay with the original cam
lobes or trust that the person pulling the cam has done it correctly.

Eric,

Lack of oil feed is one case of cam failure and something you need to watch
for. The spray bar in some of these engines was held in with plastic clips.
The clips get brittle & break away. When this happens, much of the oil goes
out the clip holes instead of the spraying on the front cam lobes.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave
