Re: [MBZ] 350SD head

2009-03-07 Thread Peter Frederick

Ha ha!

Or in the case of my brother and I, you get to do both jobs because
some monkey broke a stud or three putting the exhaust manifold on.

That is a spring gasket, and you only tighten the (new) manifold nuts
enough to compress it some, not flatten it, so that the spring effect
will keep it sealed hot and cold. Not only does it leak if you
squash it flat, but the little studs will get overstressed and
fracture eventually.

I had to replace the gasket (and a stud) on mine when I replaced the
head gasket (should have replaced the head, though -- it was bad
too), but my brother was attempting to just replace the little
accordian section on his manifold and found you have to take it all
off -- and found a broken stud. Ended up doing a head gasket on the
SDL -- a very good thing, since it was leaking on the front at #1 and
was blown between #3 and #4 -- AND on his 300E at the same time since
it started blowing coolant out the side. Quite a week over there!

[MBZ] More from Chrysler

2009-03-07 Thread Tom Hargrave
 made will eventually
show up in independent, third-party rankings. Our cross-functional Customer
Satisfaction Teams are making great progress in improving quality and the
customer experience. We are using new tools like the Customer Promoter Score
to measure how well we are meeting customer expectations much sooner than
before. HYPERLINK

The Geneva Motor Show presented a great opportunity for us this week. We met
with a number of European dealers and distributors and some of the world’s
elite auto journalists, giving them the chance to drive the Dodge Circuit
EV, one of the electric-vehicle prototypes developed by our ENVI group.

Journalists were taken to a closed test facility where Frank Klegon and Doug
Quigley, a senior manager on our ENVI team, gave a presentation about the
vehicles and then allowed the media members to get behind the wheel and
drive the vehicle themselves. The reaction from the media was phenomenal,
with many commenting on the high performance of the Circuit EV and its quiet
operation. Several were impressed with the “no compromise” nature of the
vehicle and its close-to-production feel. Chrysler’s stand at Geneva
included the Chrysler 200C EV concept as well as the Dodge Circuit EV,
adding more impact and credibility to our electric-vehicle story.

We still have a tough road ahead, with a lot of work to do in terms of
getting all the concessions needed from all stakeholders in order to achieve
viability. But we are confident we have the right plan. Our task at hand now
is to focus on what we can control, by committing 100 percent of our efforts
to deliver to our customers the quality and fuel-efficient vehicles they
deserve at attractive prices.

stopped to talk to the owner, ask if they are parts cars, customer
cars, cars for sale, or what. He says sorta some of all the above.
So I go looking around, there is a very nice 350SD (not SDL) there
parked in back. Then a 300D with so-so dk blue paint and a very nice
dk blue interior, looked pretty good. Then out in the boneyard is a
115 300D, paint faded badly but body/chrome in very good condition,
all the bits there (incl some extra lights in front -- fogs?)
interior ratty. And an SEL. So I go in to ask about these cars.

350SD has a blown head gasket, AC needs a bit of freon once a year,
customer did not want to pay to have it fixed so there it sits. Ask
him how much he would take for it (it is a VERY nice looking car).
He says a $1000 would be a fair price. I ask him about the rodbender
engine, he claims not to know about that, but this one starts and
runs well other than the cooling system gets pressurized. Hm.
I have never seen just the SD, it is just like the one I just bought,
but much much nicer. H.

He says the guy who has the 300D wants $1500 for it, which seemed
fairly reasonable, and there was another Benz there, a 126? SEL I
think that sorta ran but was in half decent shape, said he would sell
both as a pkg, not that I want them but the SEL could be a good parts
car I guess.

He says the 115 was running fine but the blower resistor overheated
and caught fire, burned under the dash or something, guy didn't want
to fool with it, so it got parked in the boneyard but has not been
stripped or anything. He was gonna find out what the owner might
take for it, if anyone is interested in that car it looked pretty
solid but nasty paint and interior but mostly very nice chrome and
other bits. I figure it for crusher cost+a bit maybe.

So, anyway, if anyone has any interest...

I am thinking about this 350SD. It was very clean, silver with the
light gray interior, looked well-taken care of (there are some people
around here with lots of Benzes and money, some very nice cars).
Didn't check the miles. Assuming it is just the head gasket and not
a cracked head (is that a problem on these cars? could it be the
head not the gasket?), that wouldn't be much problem to fix, right?
And if it is running half well, drive it till the rodbender starts to
act up, or even do a pre-emptive rod job now? I vaguely recall some
discussion of that procedure -- how hard would that be? I am
thinking that for $800 (if I beat on the guy a bit) or $1000 and some
parts and a bit of time, a very nice car could be running.

Re: [MBZ] 350SD head

2009-03-07 Thread dave walton
Use Hylomar on the replacement head gasket. Be careful when you turn
the engine by hand, the spring on the vacuum pump causes it to lurch
forward. Remove the pump if it's a problem.
You can do the head/head-gasket with the car in the engine. You'd have
to pull it to replace the connecting rods. It comes out with the
transmission - you can't get to all the bolts connecting the two with
it in the car.
It might be possible to disassemble the front suspension enough to get
the oil pan off to get at the crankshaft. Probably be more work than
pulling the engine.
Rods were $190 apiece when I did mine.
No reason to replace the head bolts if their length is within
tolerance. They stretch when they go bad. I had to replace 3 of them
as I recall.
You need to be prudent with what you replace, otherwise you will spend
thousands to replace good parts "just in case".

Re: [MBZ] 350SD head

Replace the head bolts -- they very rarely stay short enough the
second time, and the result will be what I had -- a leaking head
gasket. If any are definitely too long, condemn the whole set.

They aren't anywhere near as expensive as doing the job again in a
couple years.

That could be OK. It's all about price and effort. But that
kind of territory, if the car is otherwise nice and you
realistically
could put it right enough to drive (you should see my to-be-done

then you can have a pretty nice ride for not so much that way.

I thought the cracking head problem had been dealt with by

Not much to tell. They were Europe-only and just a SWB 126 with the

weight savings over the LWB and spartan Euro amenities, but I don't know

560SL was only for the US and Australia, but the 126 coupe and LWB sedan
got the 5.6 in Europe and elsewhere from 1985-1991 (SE was 1988-1990).
The 5.0 was also available elsewhere alongside the 5.6 until the end of

increased the load rating of them to close to what the regular trailer

[MBZ] RE '95 E300D

2009-03-07 Thread ned kleinhenz
Ralph:
I had the same experience as Jan Gurthrie. The wiring harness and fuel
system o-rings are subject to failure starting at about the 10 year-old age.

I'm now on my second E-300D. I gave the first one to my son about a 1-1/2
ago and he subsequently traded it in for a new car. That one had about 380k
miles on the odo and still ran very strong. But the chasis was failing.
The blower and air conditioner no longer worked, windshield cracked, water
leaked into the interior, rust starting to show everywhere. That one spent
all its time in the Great Lakes area.

The second copy, I am now driving is just the opposite. Car Fax said it
came from Texas. At 188K miles, the chasis is still like new, and
mechanically, I think it is still sound. But, as I wrote in recent
postings, it is not running well. These cars have a very complicated active
air plenum / fuel injection / EGR system. If anything messes up in that
system, you can pull you hair out trying to isolate the problem. And until
you solve it, the car runs, but like a POS.

The vast majortity of the time, these '95 diesels have no problems and they
run like beasts. While geting >30 mpg they accelerate, brake and handle
very well.

Over the years, I experienced a few expensive repairs. As noted, the engine
wiring harness insulation degrades and needs replacement. (The fuel system
o-rings are a PITA but inexpensive.) I had to replace a catalyst (yes this
diesel has one) and exhaust system at the cost of about $2000.
The vacuum pump is subject to sudden and catastrophic failure. If you buy
the car, immediately replace it so you don't have to worry about it.
The sunroof can fail and costs up to $2000 to repair at a dealer. (Or you
can live without a functional sunroof).

Don't let that last paragraph scare you off. Those are just issue to check
in deterniming the price. I drove two used copies almost 300k miles to
experience those problems. And these are fantastic cars to drive. What are
you going to buy that will do better than that.

Cheers,
Ned Kleinhenz

[MBZ] alternator/brush questions

2009-03-07 Thread Allan Streib
You may remember that I suspected that my alternator was going out on my
300D.

A couple of weeks ago the alternator warning lamp came on, dim at first
then brighter. I continued to work, and when I drove the car at
lunchtime the lamp did not come on. On the way home that evening it
came on again.

Also, when temps are cold I had been noticing a noise that I initially
suspected was the turbo but now am thinking maybe it was the alternator.

I pulled it today, and rotating it by hand there is some noise though it
turns smoothly. Is that normal?

I removed the brush set and they don't look to me like they are worn far
enough to not make contact. The shaft that they rub against does seem
pretty worn however, there are definite grooves worn where the brushes
ride. Again, not sure if this is normal.

Thinking I'll take it over to Autozone and have them test it, unless
this description is enough to draw any conclusions.

Thanks,

Re: [MBZ] OT: Work travel

2009-03-07 Thread LWB250

Years ago one of my employers tried this stunt with those of us who traveled
extensively. In my case, I made my own schedule with the customers, so I just
started telling them I couldn't be at their site until Monday afternoons (or
later) and had to leave on Friday mornings.

Since they were often being charged for 5 days of consulting, this did not sit
well.

Word got back (at least to my manager, who was a former traveler and pissed
about the edict himself, knowing how unfair it was) and suddenly I started
getting comp time again.

[MBZ] I am stupid

2009-03-07 Thread Rich Thomas
So about a year ago I put a ("new") used brake booster on the 300TD
after spending a lot of time chasing a no-brake-boost problem, and
finally decided it was the brake booster after huge amounts of effort on
that. Put on a new one and it was fine. So a few weeks ago same
problem, and no shutoff, I figured the used booster I put on had crapped
out too. Ordered one from the list mom, put it on last weekend, still
no brake boost. sh*t. So today I put the previous one back on and
started chasing vac problems again with the vac meter, and by isolating
things it seems to be related to the lock system (they have never really
worked) or something else not very critical, maybe in the HVAC system
(which is not working either for some time. I plugged off one tee going
to the locks, have a bit better vac now but still not what it should be,
and the car will shut off when I rev it a bit. Brakes seem to be OK,
but I gotta bleed them now, again.

So Occam's razor proves correct once again, I should have taken a look
at that first. But I am really good now at changing brake boosters and
master cylinders, in particular that last nut way up under the pedal
bracket that you have to contort to get at.

So Occam's razor proves correct once again, I should have taken a look

Re: [MBZ] alternator/brush questions

2009-03-07 Thread Allan Streib
OK I took the alternator to AutoZone and had it tested. The guy thought
it was awfully noisy, but it did pass the electrical test.

Of course, since my alternator lamp is only on intermittently, that does
not really mean anything right? Only that it was working at that moment.

I declined their $100 "guaranteed forever" alternator since it was not
in stock.

Thinking I should just order one from Rusty and be done with it?

Well, let us know what you drag home ...

Only my sorry butt! The car was a private consignment, not
a seizure or anything like that, so it was somebody trying to
off their junk in a feeding frenzy environment. The car had
many rust spots getting started, on the doors and the rear jack
points. Couldn't get into the trunk. The seat springs were
starting to feel odd. The blue dash was seriously cracked.
Cigarette burns on the door panels. The engine was safe from
rust as the whole passenger side was covered with black oil.
Head gasket? The reservoir was quite dark looking. The tranny
fluid looked and smelled normal, the only highlight. 230kmi.

He (we) decided that it was too much of a project for what
he was looking for, so we walked. It was bitterly cold, a bit
below freezing but with quite a wind. Ugh. Wasn't worth braving
the weather to see what it went for. If you ask me, it'll show up
on Craigslist before too awful long.

I did see a Mercury 50HP outboard of my vintage. Had it been
an 85HP I would have stayed and bid on it. Lots of interesting
junk, but nothing that crept over my threshold of 'no more'!

Or you can 'rebuild' yours for a bit less, and a bunch of
work. I got the bearings for mine at a local electrical
rebuild shop, they also turned the slip rings. You can
get the VR/brush pack from Rusty. You'll end up spending
your $100 that way, assuming local access to a suitable shop.
No warrantee on going that way!

Re: [MBZ] I am stupid

2009-03-07 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Have you checked out the vacuum pump? A torn diaphragm can allow oil into
the booster, destroying it. It would cause the symptoms as you describe.
The rebuild kit is cheap and not too difficult. A disposable fuel filter
added in the vacuum line will reveal oil in the system. Booster can be
tested simply with a Mity-Vac or other vacuum tester.

I made a homebuilt tool to start the impossible-to-reach nut out of a piece
of copper tubing long enough to reach in and a short piece of rubber hose on
the end of the tubing to grip the nut.

So about a year ago I put a ("new") used brake booster on the 300TD
after spending a lot of time chasing a no-brake-boost problem, and
finally decided it was the brake booster after huge amounts of effort on
that. Put on a new one and it was fine. So a few weeks ago same

out too. Ordered one from the list mom, put it on last weekend, still

started chasing vac problems again with the vac meter, and by isolating
things it seems to be related to the lock system (they have never really
worked) or something else not very critical, maybe in the HVAC system

Why put a Japanese alternator on a German car? Or is it really better?

doesn't have total control over what appears there (at least as I
understand it). Give him a call Monday at (800) 741-5252 and ask him.

the glimmmering, off and on alt light is classic worn brush symptom.

I'd try putting in new brush/VR set for $20 or less. Even if the
slip rings are worn, it still may work a long time. I've only had
one, on the 81 240D where the alt was too far gone. (of cars from

My Dad's '85 300D is doing the same sort of things. The charging light
would faintly glow at an idle. Changed out the brushes (they are 2-3
years old) with another set. That didn't change anything. *** Swapped
in a different alt, and the charge light didn't glow but voltages at the
battery were just a touch over 12v. That was 3hrs ago. I was thinking
that there might be something else that's restricting the charge level
below 1500rpm on Dad's car. That brought me here to ask for help and
while typing this email I slapped myself (at the *** point) in the head
when I realized that I didn't plug the alt back in. DOH! Charge
voltage is now 13.4 at idle.

Moral of this story is to always put everything back the way it came out.
Allan, buy a rebuilt Bosch from Rusty. I'd suggest replacing the belts
(all 4) while you're in there. That job is a PAIN on the 617 compared
to the 603...

What pressures are you measuring? If it just modulator pressure or are you
measuring working pressure as well? Looking at my '83 TDM for 722.X trannys
I see max modulator pressure of 4 bar (58 PSI) and max working pressures of
13.7 bar (200 PSI).

I probably will. I would just try replacing the brushes, except the
alternator is also noisy. And though it turns easily by hand, there is
a feeling of something dragging or rubbing internally, along with the
noise.

I do have a full spare set of belts for the car, but the belts in
service now are not really that old. Maybe a year or 18 months (gotta
start writing down dates for this stuff).

An electric Wheel Horse garden tractor, with dead batteries, electric front
mount mower deck, and electric snowblower, for $50. I saw it in the first half
hour, but transportation would not have been convenient. I could have sold both
my Cubs, bought new batteries for the Simplicity, and had hundreds of dollars
left over. The paint was still shiny, and the accessories looked like new.

If it were me, since you have to pull them all off anyway, I
would put the slightly used belts in the truck as spares and put
new ones on the engine.

Since the purpose of the spares is "just it case", I find "used,
but still good" works well - and then I have less money tied up
it parts.
