If you have been playing with fancy new features in Gmail that may be broken
or currently out of service, use the Gmail "Escape Hatch"

https://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=0

In theory, that disables all the experimental Gmail stuff and drops you in
the inbox. Give that a try and see if that helps any.

Nope. I am his serf for two weeks. The "bring in your 240D" would have to be
his suggestion. I am more thinking that I will be doing wet sanding for 80
hours. I simply want to apprentice for two weeks then return to my day job,
but pick up the equivalent of what the local community college used to offer
as Body Repair. I certainly won't be doing this for a living ... or I don't
plan to (unless the bug bites me bad).

I see this more as a temporary training under a self-taught master, and you
can't normally buy that.

That should make the deal more palatable; if you mess up, it's not on
something he needs to be concerned about. If you're helping him, though,
he will want you to work on something he is concerned about, so don't just

[MBZ] an idea -- and perhaps a stupid one (me being me)

2009-03-20 Thread Wonko the Sane
We have two body shops in Jefferson who specialize in collision
repairs.Always very busy. And another one, out in the country (if you can be
more "country" than Jefferson) owned by an older guy (in his late 60s) who
makes his living fixing up vintage cars for collectors. He works sort of
slow but is rumored to be a bit of a perfectionist.

Now, I have 120 hours of vacation available. I have had 120 hours of
vacation available for at least the last five years, since 120 hours is the
max we can carry and we get vacation time added on every paycheck. In other
words, I rarely take any vacation and just lose whatever is added on every
two weeks.

Here's what popped into my head while watching some basketball in the
kitchen.

I am a fairly intelligent individual, spent eight years in universities,
spent six years in the Coast Guard as a skilled technician (both avionics
and mechanics). I am good with my hands and know my way around tools. And I
am a bit anal when it comes to doing a task.

What if I presented myself to the old guy who fixes up vintage cars (I've
seen his work -- he is damn'd good -- worked on my brother-in-law's Edsel)
and offered him a deal: I work free for him for two weeks, doing whatever he
wants me to do to help him out (such as wet sanding primer or sweeping) IF
he will teach me a few tricks: (1) basic welding, (2) basic body filler &
sanding, and (3) how to mix paint to match faded Benz colors, and then spray
it correctly.

I will lose no income, since I have the vacation time available. He will get
someone to do the dirty work for two weeks, and, if he is the craftsman that
I think him to be, he will be happy to pass on a few secrets of the trade to
someone younger (by maybe a decade) who will carry on the tradition of
keeping old cars looking good. It isn't like I am going to take any business
away from him, because he already has more than he can handle.

I am pretty sure this guy isn't doing this for the money, but for the love
of old cars. And maybe he will let me "train" on my own cars!

Propane provides about 2500 BTU for the same volume of natural gas that
provides around 1000 BTU.

When it comes to gases, natural gas isn't terribly efficient in a lot of
respects

Thanks Jim -
It's a Automatic Floor shift - I didn't mention it but the park/neutral
lockout is giving minor problems also (bumping the shift lever makes it
work) and since the BU lights and AntiStart switch are
inter-related/together, I am hoping the switch has loosened and will only
require tightening. (fingers crosses).

Hoping to work on it tomorrow. Sounds like the switch is on the side of the
AT rather than under the dash/etc.

Will try to report on progress Sunday - perhaps with some photos. I was
unable to find any info in the FActory WSM's (paper ones), the CD or Haynes
(I tend to try to find all info I can) ;-) so perhaps others are in the dark
like I was?

Later don't forget - the 12H of Sebring starts tomorrow at 10AM -

Automatic? Neutral safety switch, on the side of the
tranny. Not all that fun to get to, and usually quite
messy once you do. I repaired mine, but I was prepared
to replace it if necessary.

Stickshift? On the side of the shift mechanism up top,
probably. If it's anything like my 115.

Automatic? Neutral safety switch, on the side of the
tranny. Not all that fun to get to, and usually quite
messy once you do. I repaired mine, but I was prepared
to replace it if necessary.

Stickshift? On the side of the shift mechanism up top,
probably. If it's anything like my 115.

I don't remember, actually. But you can lube them,
and except on a 107 (which mine was) they're fairly
easy to get out so it couldn't hurt.

Yea, same thing I was going to say. Here, folks put their sheds on skids
(think a couple of pressure treated 2x10 skis) -- it isn't a permanent
structure and isn't taxed as part of the real estate. Plus, you can move it
to a different part of the back yard if the fancy strikes, if you round off
the skids before you mount the shed onto them.

[MBZ] Good Mechanic in Denver (West Side)

2009-03-20 Thread Bill Hynes

Peter Frederick asks: "Does anybody know of a good independent (or a responsive
dealer) in the area (Denver)"

Peter, the service from any of the three dealers in Denver is, at best,
incompetent and expensive. There are three or four independents around town,
BUT, I would not let any but one touch my cars no matter how drunk I was.

I will probably get banned from the list for this, but the only independent
that I trust in the Denver area is: Stu Ritter Mercedes-Benz

m...@sturitter.com
Hours: M - F 8:00 am to 5:00
Closed Sat. & Sun.

Mark Langston is the owner/operator/chief mechanic.

By no means is he cheap, but I have found him to be honest and VERY competent.

He's actually talking about nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium levels as

The kit from your ag extension is a good way to do it. There are home

We took the Viking RouteJust a 4 burner, all Gas, self-cleaning, no
dual fuel, no sealed burners (they're a PIA to keep clean). Store would
not sell/install it unless we had a hood (vented outside) to go with it due
to high output burners. Neither would our contractor who did our kitchen.

The Wolfes were nice, too, but we were trying to stay away from all the
electronic crap. IIRC, the wolfe was her 2'nd choice.
