Wait. Is it a Macintosh II, or a Macintosh SE? Because I don't think there
was a II SE. Unless there was an Apple II SE, and not a Macintosh at all?

If it gets really successful, we could also add an auction format,

Alex,

I have a 68030 II SE I am getting rid of. Would that work for
you? I have a 17" Mac monitor with the built in speakers too, if you
want it. I think it came with one of the first Mac types with the
video I/O card from the factory. Very fancy (expensive) monitor in its day!

Also have a 7200, G3 Beige and Blue/white Macs, along with a Wall
street laptop with OS 10 on it, looking for homes if anyone is
interested. Pay the freight, and they are yours! Oh, and I have one
other, can't remember the model, but it is also an 030, the small
one. I used it for a headless print server for quite a while.

(cleaned the garage today)

My favorite old app is print shop for the Apple II. You could do
stuff with it that later Winders and Mac versions could not do. Love
those dot matrix graphics. Now it is a "retro" look. A step up (or
down) from Asci II graphics.

Aha, Jim, now you've hit on the _real_ reason to buy trailing-edge
hardware... it's not about saving money so much as it's about being
able to run old games.

Sometimes I wish I'd kept my Mac Plus around just to play Dark Castle.
(Yes, I know I could do it though emulation, but it's just not the
same.)

[MBZ] brake job nightmare

2009-09-07 Thread Allan Streib
Well my brake replacement has turned into an all-day nightmare.

First I realized I didn't get the grease and wheel bearing seals I
thought I otdered. I checked the invoice and they weren't listed.
Somebody messed up, not sure who..

Calling around on Labor day to see who has seals. Autozone has them.
Go and get them and a tub of Mobil 1 grease. One hour + gasoline
wasted.

Rear calipers, pads, and rotors go on without issue.

The new front rotors are coated with what looks like varnish. Brake
cleaner doesn't touch it. Gasoline takes it off, slowly. Spend about
an hour cleaning the rotors.

As I'm torquing down the bolts that hold the rotor and hub together, my
10mm hex head socket (Craftsman) breaks. Off to Sears to get another.
Another hour + more gasoline wasted. As I get back from Sears, a
thunderstorm rolls in and it pours rain for about an hour (I'm working
in the driveway).

The right hub, bearings, new (reman) caliper and pads go back together
OK. Thinking I'm nearly done, I get the left hub and bearings cleaned,
regreased and back together with new rotor. Trying to install the new
caliper and pads, they will not slip over the rotor. Arrrgh!
Frustrated, I call it a night.

Is it sometimes necessary to grind down the pads a little to get them to
fit? These are the expensive Akebono pads, don't really want to grind
them down if I don't have to. My other option would be to remove the
"noise reduction" plates, I think that would give me enough clearance
but not sure if it's a good idea. The right hand side did not have any
problems, why would the left?

Honest to God, Kleb, the stuff you come up with sometimes just amazes me.
Since this was the first post I have ever made about a radio that you have
seen, you would look less foolish if you reread yours after a while before
sending them.

Since your knowledge base is pretty much limited to what you can see out
your back window, it does you no favors to open your mouth about things that
are alien to you. I know you wouldn't know a Traffic Pro if you fell over one
on the way to the privy so I will tell you that it is a DIN size
combination GPS navigation/AM-FM stereo/CD player unit with speaker or amp-out
connections and a LCD screen between the knobs. It has turn by turn directions
displayed and announced but no map. Small but OK if it can be readily viewed
while driving. For the price, it is a good unit with a few drawbacks. I bought
it mainly because Jaime had installed one in a car of his and I got a bee in
my bonnet that this might be fun to have plus I would then have a CD player
to replace the Alpine 7347 cassette player installed in 1984 when the car
was new.

As to cars, my C300 will be with me two years come October and it has been
so trouble free that I am not going to buy an extended warranty for it.

So, you were saying? Oh, I remember. It'll be your usual two word response.
You should trademark it.

For cars without drain plugs, I like the method that I found in a Ford
FSM: Put a hose on the line from the tranny to the cooler, and pump the
pan dry by idling the engine.
Drop the pan, change the filters, put a gallon of ATF in it, and idle
the engine until new fluid starts coming out. Now put in as much fluid
as you recovered, and check the fluid level.
The first pumping cycle enabled you to drop the pan without getting
fluid everywhere, and the second one changed the fluid in the torque
converter.

Wish I had known that when I changed the ATF and filter on an old Ford
pickup truck we had in Austin, TX!

It used something like 3 gallons of ATF, a quantity I had not anticipated
when I started the drain process. Made a HUGE mess on the street in front
of our rented house. I had to go back to Pep Boys and buy more ATF.

I was sorely tempted to drill a hole in the bottom of the transmission
pan, braze a large nut on it, and use a bolt to plug the hole of my newly
fashioned drain.

I actually did do that on a Ford 302 we had in a 1962 Willys Utility Wagon
in Colorado when I was changing the engine oil and the
previous-owner-damaged threads for the drain plug stripped. I ground the
paint off the pan around the drain hole, found a bolt and nut of the
correct thread, threaded the nut onto the bolt, threaded the bolt into the
weak threads in the pan, and brazed the nut to the outside of the pan. I
poured a quart or two of oil through to flush out the burnt oil, cranked
in the bolt, and refilled the engine. When I got home, my wife wondered
why I was late ...

B'lieve I got you both beat. Wife got sick in '03 and died in '05. 240D
was parked those two years. Broke the pressure plate loose which was stuck
to the disk and then ran it to town only often enough to keep the battery
charged. Broke leg and car sat for another 6 months. Been driving it to
town about every other day; 25 mile round trip for past few months. Figure
its time the oil was changed, so will do that as soon as I finish with the
!#$%^&^%$#! Climate Control that shorted out and burned up in the 300D.
Quite a job finding the clamp on tie point lugs and bayonet connectors that
got overheated and only pass current part time. If it works when its fired
up, it'll be a miracle.

Rough calculation adds up to about 6 or 7 years since oil was changed in
240D.

I did put a drain plug on the pan after the first time I changed fluid
in it (before the $2 sucker) so it was easy to drain it after that. But
the $2 sucker was even easier as I did not have to get under and do it,
even with the drain plug.

This shows where the wire goes -- it apparently connects to the external

it worked!

Subject: [MBZ] Drain ATF with Topsider?
Sent: Sep 7, 2009 3:47 AM

I need to change the tranny fluid and filter on both my 124s ('86 300E
and '87 300D). Any reason why I should not start by draining as much
fluid out the fill/dipstick tube by suction? Wouldn't this minimize
the amount that comes out in the drain pan, on the floor, and on me
when I open the torque converter plug and drop the transmission pan?
Is there a reason why I don't remember ever hearing about anyone using
a Topsider for ATF before? Please enlighten me---I've changed ATF on
other cars but never on a Mercedes, partly because of a dread of the
mess, but also out of fear of the Benz tranny's sensitivity to
cleanliness and proper fluid level.

The new MacBook Pro was purchased by my employer. The 12" PowerBook G4
that I use at home is still chugging along trouble-free, running Tiger
(10.4). I'll probably keep it as my primary home machine until Apple
stops providing updates, or it has a major failure.

I'd just pull the drain plugs. They have drain pan catches the size of large
garbage can lids that help keep the floor clean and work real well for coolant
also.

Why bother with it? You are going to be under the car anyway, just take
out the drain plug.

Yea, Woger keeps buying cars that always seem to have problems, same
with radios. He will keep complaining about them, but keeps on buying them.

Well, here is old Faeth, just being himself.

The fact was, the unit would cut off sound about every five minutes and
resume after a short period, regular as clockwork. Over and over and over.
Since it was in warranty, I finally contacted Becker in NJ and talked to some
doofus in service who of course had "never heard of this" but would check and
get back to me. I'm still waiting but it's only been three years or so.

I don't think the dipstick tube goes to the bottom of the pan,
so you'd need to use a long CLEAN tube to slip into it. This
also won't remove the torque converter fluid charge, which must
be drained traditionally. Given the steps you have to go
through anyway, I don't think it saves much of anything to
go through the top on this one.

Aha, Jim, now you've hit on the _real_ reason to buy trailing-edge
hardware... it's not about saving money so much as it's about being
able to run old games.

Sometimes I wish I'd kept my Mac Plus around just to play Dark Castle.
(Yes, I know I could do it though emulation, but it's just not the
same.)
