When I was commuting interisland, I rented cars from everyone, big and small. Rented lots of times from Alamo. Never bought "optional Insurance" Never had a problem. I have rented elsewhere and always reject their "insurance." Never a problem so far. MC/Visa cover car rentals if your own car insurance doesn't. Andrew, try telling them if they want it, sue you. "I'll see you in court." You might also talk to the credit card company you charged the rental to. andrew strasfogel wrote: We rented a car from Alamo in Canada back on Dec. 18. Re: [MBZ] Rental car crap - OT
I rented a car some time ago from Alamo. I did not have any problem with the car at all. When I took it back they said there was a small dent in the fender that we had put there. I actually did not take it back but had my wife do it. We just told them no we were not going to pay as we did not put any dents in it. I basically told them that they would have to sue me to get me to pay as I just did not do it and would not be responsible. Another time I rented from Hertz, DID put a dent in the car took it back, told them about it. They told me not to worry about it and never heard about it again. IMHO, I rent from Hertz, Yet to have another one of those damage claim issues. May be a dollar or 2 more but worth it. -Original Message- From: andrew strasfogel To: Mercedes Discussion List Sent: Tue, Mar 22, 2011 10:00 pm Subject: [MBZ] Rental car crap - OT We rented a car from Alamo in Canada back on Dec. 18. Kleb, From Dan: Subject: Re: OT photography Date: Tue, 22 Mar 2011 20:15:35 -0500 I am no longer subscribed, but you are right: diffused light. Cheapest setup is a big frame overhead with a scrim of gauzy white fabric stretched over it, with a battery of regular shop lights directly above that, spread out over it with daylight-spectrum florescent bulbs in it for natural color. Since the car will be stationary, you don't need a lot of light, just very diffused light. Keep the ISO on the camera as low as it will go, the aperture fairly small for a good depth of field, and let the shutter speed be as low as it needs to be to get a good exposure (you'll need a tripod and a remote shutter button.) Meter off an 18% grey card (available for a few bucks at any photo store) and set the exposure manually for that reading. Lighting interiors is much trickier. Or, just take the cars outside to a non-distracting background on a hazy overcast day. Best light of all. Dan Go to the big box store, buy a bunch of 8' florescent lights and "daylight" "bubs" (tubes) Hang them upside down under a white ceiling, or rightside up and drape white cheesecloth under them or you can use twice as many 4' shop lights. or you can line the walls of the "room with florescent lights aimed up and covered with a 1x6 on the side to direct the light up. Again ceiling and 1x6s and wall about the lights painted white. With this, you need a wall of lights on the camera side too. or get any kind of salvage light fixtures and hang them on the ceiling with cheesecloth draped below What is a website that has this stuff? Or maybe a couple of those big umbrella-style reflector flash units that the pros use in their studios. Don't know what they cost, and you'd need a camera with a flash sync connector (i.e. not a cheapo point-n-shoot camera). A couple of those halogen work lights might do the job also, if you set them up so that they are indirectly lighting the car. It will be tricky to avoid glare and reflections completely since there are so many glass and shiny surfaces at all kinds of different angles. A polarizing filter for the camera might help. Re: [MBZ] Oh man...
You might want to pull out the fuel sender to take a look in the tank and see if there really is any crud in there. I figured I had a crud problem in my '82 300D because I would suck air into the fuel system when I turned if the tank was low. I expected to find some terrible stuff in the strainer, so i drained the tank and pulled it out... it was perfectly clean. I've own the car for a few years and it doesn't see many miles... I was quite surprised! It gave me peace of mind to run the tank down as much as I want (as long as I don't go too fast around this really long off ramps!). I also changed the fuel sender, so could really know what was left in there. Re: [MBZ] Spare Tire
Only very carefully. I just went through a similar decision with a 2001 Michelin that looks perfect. In consulting the tire dealer with a lot of experience (80 year old store owner) He said to keep it as a spare. I was inclined to take it off, although it was almost new, and replace it with a newer worn tire. A few years ago, I had a brand new whell and tire that had been the original spare on an 85 SEL. When my daughter's car had two tires fail close together, I put the new wheel on her car. within days, it had a large blister. I popped the blister, and a few days later the tire started to come apart. So, an old spare may do for a short distance, to get to a tire shop. In general, they should not be relied on for long term. In this recent case, if it was my car, i'd have put the spare and the best of the old tires on the rear, and put a pair of new tires on the front. But since it was for a female family member, I opted for 4 new tires, and kept the michelin as a spare. The spare tire in my '95 E300D shows a manufacture date of Dec '93. Since these last of the 124's seem to have been assembled in the spring and summer of '94, that tire is probably the original spare. It has spent its life nice and covered and protected in the tire well, and apparently only came out for a few days of use during emergencies. The tire looks new and shows no checking or any other visible signs of aging. I know there is a big fear of using "old" tires. But what really ages tires? Is it UV (sun) and ozone? Or extreme temperatures and road beating? Vapors and chemicals on pavements? Or do the rubber compounds continue to react or polymerize? This tire is almost old enough to vote. So is it too hazardous to use as a spare? Re: [MBZ] Spare Tire
The "normal" degradation in tires due to wear, road hazards, etc. are visual but damage from sunlight (UV) can cause C=C double bond breakage and deterioration and visible cracking of polymers and this along with heat may cause off-gasing of internal lubricant (e.g., phthalates in vinyl dashes) accelerating this process. This all reminds me of the time I put the spare on my Dakota. I'd guess this was in 2000 so it was about 4 years old then. It'd spent that time hanging under the truck braced on opposite sides. While the tire was round it was ever so slightly banana shaped and headed down the road (I95 mind you) the rear of the truck shuffled back and forth something awful. I proceeded down the shoulder at a walking pace thinking "I dunno if I can do this" but it gradually got better and I started going faster. After 10 minutes or so I got up to highway speed and by the time I made the next exit it was just fine. A tire shop pulled a big screw out of the flat and swapped it back onto the truck and the spare back underneath never to be seen again... Of course it could have been used the time by wife drove a tire off the rim (see my last post, she's hard on cars) but the AAA guy "couldn't find the spare". Re: [MBZ] long enough to pay for insurance?
We purchased a 2006 Kia Amanti in late 2009 primarily because of the Kia 10/100 warranty and was unhappily shocked during the closing to find out that 10/100 only applied to the original owner and 6/60 was the new warranty and now we had less then 10K miles of warranty left since the car had around 50K miles. I should have walked away from the deal and went somewhere else but I didn't and started to look at aftermarket warranties. What I found was that many of them seem to be fly-by-night scam artists and you have to be careful in selecting one. The one that we selected after careful study seemed to have a good report and a decent coverage of items. We were trying to cover the electrical items that a high-end (for Kia) car would have and that could be expensive to repair. If you have a covered repair then when you have it repaired there is a preauthorization number to be called to have the mechanic speak to the adjuster and approve or deny the claim. The problem that I had in getting the repairs done for a malfunctioning trunk latch release was that the Kia Service Center refused to even consider the warranty company. If I wanted the repair then I could pay for it like anyone else. I tried several dealers and was told that if they didn't sell the warranty then they wouldn't honor it at all. The third-party warranty during preauthorization is supposed to give a credit card number over the phone to the mechanic to charge the repair to. Supposedly the service centers said that they would get the number and charge the repair and then the warranty company would dispute the charges. When I called the warranty to see where I could take the car for service, it was always mom-and-pop garages that don't have reprogramming tools or anything more then basic break-fix. I feel like I was burned three times over this car purchase. 1) By the dealer for not disclosing the 10/100 up front since my wife and I had talked about during the sale. 2) The low mileage Kia had numerous problems that we are still trying to get repair on a supposed flagship car. 3) A third-party warranty that seems to be honest in a business of thieves and no else will take because of all of the other scammers. Quite true, they (insurance companies) also reinsure themselves, so it's not quite as simple as I made it sound, but bottom line, they make more money than they pay out in the long run. The extended warranty companies in particular also factor in such things as the liklihood that the owner will sell the car before the warranty term expires, and have many fine-print exclusions of the most common repairs (replacement of "wear items" almost always excluded, sometimes not just belts and hoses but defined to include things like water pumps, alternators, compressors, etc; seals and gaskets often excluded, etc.) I've never dealt with an aftermarket warranty company; I wonder if they also use the common insurance co. tactic of initial denial of claims, putting the burden on the policy holder to pursue the matter. Re: [MBZ] OT: question about older Mac PowerBook
Three years is typical life. You can extend it by "erratic" use -- that is, randomly use most of the capacity and recharge. The very worst thing you can do is use the PB with it plugged in all the time, as this causes lithium metal to plate out on the carbon electrode, the main cause of high resistance. Very slow discharge can remove the metal, but it's better to cycle it all the time. Deep discharge is also bad, but you already know that. Re: [MBZ] Spare Tire
Here is how I always figure it. I like to drive at night when I travel - road to myself. Not going to get a tire at 2:00 AM on the interstate. Also when you are forced to by a tire on the side of the road it is also always more expensive the the normal venue, and if your spare goes after replacing your flat - your talking a tow and a big waste of time. So when I buy a set of 4 new tires - I always move the best to the spare. I do this with my cars and the company limos. This way, I always have an acceptable spare that I could realistically finish any trip with. About this time last year - we held a discussion on the board about the spare on my Miata which is of course a donut. In that particular car I was questioning if it made sense to just ditch it since I don't really drive that car at night - or on really long trips and always have a cell phone, and the trunk space would really be nice. But the tire is still in there. Can't bring myself to get rid of it. On Tue, Mar 22, 2011 at 3:44 PM, Randy Bennell wrote: > I have a similar issue. Re: [MBZ] Proof of concept for a very expensive boost gauge.
I am not done with it yet. The one I test with is the OE atmospheric pressure sensor. I will be using the OE boost sensor for the final application (Bosch in 90/91 and Denso in later years). I need to get the MAX6675 break out board working in order to read the EGT sensor (K type thermo coupler). BTW for those of you with ODBII ports you can get bluetooth dongles for android and iPhone that will do similar things. -Rolf On 03/22/2011 10:03 AM, Alex Chamberlain wrote: On Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 7:47 PM, Rolf wrote: My first "amarino" project, combining Android + Arduino. http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/thread-enginesystemsmanagement Cool! Re: [MBZ] Spare Tire
I think what does the most damage, is exposure to light and UV rays. On high performance tires, cycles count too, but the tires on a Benz aren't really high performance. Your spare is now 18 years old. There is no way to tell the true condition of such an old tire, and that's why it's recommended to change them long before they reach that age. The company I use to insure my Porsche won't insure a car on tires older than 10 years old, and that's taking into account, they specialize in collectors cars, so few of these cars are left in the sun or outdoors, other than when being exercised or at shows. 10 years old tires is the date they refuse to insure the car, but most change them well before that. Personally, I would consider changing it. Even a new cheapish Walmart type tire is probably a better backup spare, than a top of the line 18 year old tire. Gerry --- From: "Rich Thomas" Easy to jam, the signals are extremely weak. I think you can buy jammers off the intertubes or probably make one easily if you were so inclined. You could use a paper map, they are fairly immune to radio waves and such. --R On 3/21/2011 5:01 PM, Mountain Man wrote: Does anyone here use GPS? I guess these guys are gonna jam GPS. Re: [MBZ] OT: question about older Mac PowerBook
The battery is kaput. Replace it soon, or you risk data loss if you lose AC power while the machine is running. OWC makes some of the best aftermarket Mac laptop batteries.
